 2 That Hanani <2607 Chananiy >, one <0259 >echad > of my brethren <0251 >ach >, came <0935 bow> >, he and [certain] men <0582 >enowsh > of Judah <3063 Y@huwdah >; and I asked <7592 sha>al > them concerning <5921 <al > the Jews <3064 Y@huwdiy > that had escaped <6413 p@leytah >, which <0834 >aher > were left <7604 sha>ar > of the captivity <7628 sh@biy >, and concerning <5921 <al > Jerusalem <3389 Y@ruwshalaim >.

 3 And they said <0559 >amar > unto me, The remnant <7604 sha>ar > that are left <7604 sha>ar > of the captivity <7628 sh@biy > there <8033 sham > in the province <4082 m@diynah > [are] in great <1419 gadowl > affliction <7451 ra< > and reproach <2781 cherpah >: the wall <2346 chowmah > of Jerusalem <3389 Y@ruwshalaim > also [is] broken <6555 parats > down, and the gates <8179 sha<ar > thereof are burned <3341 yatsath > with fire <0784 >esh >.

 4 And it came <1961 hayah > to pass, when I heard <8085 shama< > these <0428 >el-leh > words <1697 dabar >, that I sat <3427 yashab > down and wept <1058 bakah >, and mourned <56> [certain] days <3117 yowm >, and fasted <6684 tsuwm >, and prayed <6419 palal > before <6440 paniym > the God <0430 >elohiym > of heaven <8064 shamayim >,

 5. And said <0559 >amar >, I beseech <0577 >anna> > thee, O LORD <3068 Y@hovah > God <0430 >elohiym > of heaven <8064 shamayim >, the great <1419 gadowl > and terrible <3372 yare> > God <0410 >el >, that keepeth <8104 shamar > covenant <1285 b@riyth > and mercy <2617 checed > for them that love <0157 >ahab > him and observe <8104 shamar > his commandments <4687 mitsvah >:

 6 Let thine ear <0241 >ozen > now <4994 na> > be attentive <7183 qashshab >, and thine eyes <5869 <ayin > open <6605 pathach >, that thou mayest hear <8085 shama< > the prayer <8605 t@phillah > of thy servant <5650 <ebed >, which <0834 >aher > I pray <6419 palal > before <6440 paniym > thee now <3117 yowm >, day <3119 yowmam > and night <3915 layil >, for the children <1121 ben > of Israel <3478 Yisra>el > thy servants <5650 <ebed >, and confess <3034 yadah > the sins <2403 chatta>ah > of the children <1121 ben > of Israel <3478 Yisra>el >, which <0834 >aher > we have sinned <2398 chata> > against thee: both I and my father's <1> house <1004 bayith > have sinned <2398 chata> >.

 7 We have dealt very corruptly <2254 chabal > against thee, and have not kept <8104 shamar > the commandments <4687 mitsvah >, nor the statutes <2706 choq >, nor the judgments <4941 mishpat >, which <0834 >aher > thou commandedst <6680 tsavah > thy servant <5650 <ebed > Moses <4872 Mosheh >.

 8 Remember <2142 zakar >, I beseech <4994 na> > thee, the word <1697 dabar > that thou commandedst <6680 tsavah > thy servant <5650 <ebed > Moses <4872 Mosheh >, saying <0559 >amar >, [If] ye transgress <4603 ma<al >, I will scatter <6327 puwts > you abroad <6327 puwts > among the nations <5971 <am >:

 9 But [if] ye turn <7725 shuwb > unto me, and keep <8104 shamar > my commandments <4687 mitsvah >, and do <6213 <asah > them; though <0518 >im > there were of you cast <5080 nadach > out unto the uttermost <7097 qatseh > part of the heaven <8064 shamayim >, [yet] will I gather <6908 qabats > them from thence <8033 sham >, and will bring <0935 bow> > them unto the place <4725 maqowm > that I have chosen <0970 bachuwr > to set <7931 shakan > my name <8034 shem > there <8033 sham >.

 10 Now these <1992 hem > [are] thy servants <5650 <ebed > and thy people <5971 <am >, whom <0834 >aher > thou hast redeemed <6299 padah > by thy great <1419 gadowl > power <3581 koach >, and by thy strong <2389 chazaq > hand <3027 yad >.

 11 O Lord <0136 >Adonay >, I beseech <0577 >anna> > thee, let now <4994 na> > thine ear <0241 >ozen > be attentive <7183 qashshab > to the prayer <8605 t@phillah > of thy servant <5650 <ebed >, and to the prayer <8605 t@phillah > of thy servants <5650 <ebed >, who desire <2655 chaphets > to fear <3372 yare> > thy name <8034 shem >: and prosper <6743 tsalach >, I pray <4994 na> > thee, thy servant <5650 <ebed > this day <3117 yowm >, and grant <5414 nathan > him mercy <7356 racham > in the sight <6440 paniym > of this <2088 zeh > man <0376 >iysh >. Nehemiah 2

 1. And it came <1961 hayah > to pass in the month <2320 chodesh > Nisan <5212 Niycan >, in the twentieth <6242 <esriym > year <8141 shaneh > of Artaxerxes <0783 >Artachshashta> > the king <4428 melek >, [that] wine <3196 yayin > [was] before <6440 paniym > him: and I took <5375 nasa> > up the wine <3196 yayin >, and gave <5414 nathan > [it] unto the king <4428 melek >. Now I had not been <1961 hayah > [beforetime] sad <7451 ra< > in his presence <6440 paniym >.

 2 Wherefore the king <4428 melek > said <0559 >amar > unto me, Why <4069 madduwa< > [is] thy countenance <6440 paniym > sad <7451 ra< >, seeing thou [art] not sick <2470 chalah >? this <2088 zeh > [is] nothing <0369 >ayin > [else] but sorrow <7455 roa< > of heart <3820 leb >. Then I was very <3966 m@<od > sore <7235 rabah > afraid <3372 yare> >,

 3 And said <0559 >amar > unto the king <4428 melek >, Let the king <4428 melek > live <2421 chayah > for ever <5769 <owlam >: why <4069 madduwa< > should not my countenance <6440 paniym > be sad <7489 ra<a< >, when <0834 >aher > the city <5892 <iyr >, the place <1004 bayith > of my fathers <1>' sepulchres <6913 qeber >, [lieth] waste <2720 chareb >, and the gates <8179 sha<ar > thereof are consumed <0398 >akal > with fire <0784 >esh >?

 4 Then the king <4428 melek > said <0559 >amar > unto me, For what <4100 mah > dost thou make request <1245 baqash >? So I prayed <6419 palal > to the God <0430 >elohiym > of heaven <8064 shamayim >.

 5 And I said <0559 >amar > unto the king <4428 melek >, If <0518 >im > it please <2895 towb > the king <4428 melek >, and if <0518 >im > thy servant <5650 <ebed > have found favour <3190 yatab > in thy sight <6440 paniym >, that thou wouldest send <7971 shalach > me unto Judah <3063 Y@huwdah >, unto the city <5892 <iyr > of my fathers <1>' sepulchres <6913 qeber >, that I may build <1129 banah > it.

 6 And the king <4428 melek > said <0559 >amar > unto me, (the queen <7694 shegal > also sitting <3427 yashab > by him,) For how <5704 <ad > long <5704 <ad > shall thy journey <4109 mahalak > be? and when <4970 mathay > wilt thou return <7725 shuwb >? So it pleased <3190 yatab > the king <4428 melek > to send <7971 shalach > me; and I set <5414 nathan > him a time <2165 z@man >.

 7 Moreover I said <0559 >amar > unto the king <4428 melek >, If it please <2895 towb > the king <4428 melek >, let letters <0107 >iggereth > be given <5414 nathan > me to the governors <6346 pechah > beyond <5676 <eber > the river <5104 nahar >, that they may convey <5674 <abar > me over <5674 <abar > till <5704 <ad > I come <0935 bow> > into <0413 >el > Judah <3063 Y@huwdah >;

 8 And a letter <0107 >iggereth > unto Asaph <0623 >Acaph > the keeper <8104 shamar > of the king's <4428 melek > forest <6508 pardec >, that he may give <5414 nathan > me timber <6086 <ets > to make beams <7136 qarah > for the gates <8179 sha<ar > of the palace <1002 biyrah > which <0834 >aher > [appertained] to the house <1004 bayith >, and for the wall <2346 chowmah > of the city <5892 <iyr >, and for the house <1004 bayith > that I shall enter <0935 bow> > into <5921 <al >. And the king <4428 melek > granted <5414 nathan > me, according to the good <2896 towb > hand <3027 yad > of my God <0430 >elohiym > upon me.

 9. Then I came <0935 bow> > to the governors <6346 pechah > beyond <5676 <eber > the river <5104 nahar >, and gave <5414 nathan > them the king's <4428 melek > letters <0107 >iggereth >. Now the king <4428 melek > had sent <7971 shalach > captains <8269 sar > of the army <2428 chayil > and horsemen <6571 parash > with me.

 10 When Sanballat <5571 Canballat > the Horonite <2772 Choroniy >, and Tobiah <2900 Towbiyah > the servant <5650 <ebed >, the Ammonite <5984 <Ammowniy >, heard <8085 shama< > [of it], it grieved <7489 ra<a< > them exceedingly <1419 gadowl > that there was come <0935 bow> > a man <0120 >adam > to seek <1245 baqash > the welfare <2896 towb > of the children <1121 ben > of Israel <3478 Yisra>el >.

 11 So I came <0935 bow> > to Jerusalem <3389 Y@ruwshalaim >, and was there <8033 sham > three <7969 shalowsh > days <3117 yowm >.

 12 And I arose <6965 quwm > in the night <3915 layil >, I and some <4592 m@<at > few <4592 m@<at > men <0582 >enowsh > with me; neither <3808 lo> > told <5046 nagad > I [any] man <0120 >adam > what <4100 mah > my God <0430 >elohiym > had put <5414 nathan > in my heart <3820 leb > to do <6213 <asah > at Jerusalem <3389 Y@ruwshalaim >: neither <0369 >ayin > [was there any] beast <0929 b@hemah > with me, save the beast <0929 b@hemah > that I rode <7392 rakab > upon.

 13 And I went <3318 yatsa> > out by night <3915 layil > by the gate <8179 sha<ar > of the valley <1516 gay> >, even before the dragon <8577 tanniyn > well <2869 tab >, and to the dung <0830 >ashpoth > port <8179 sha<ar >, and viewed <7663 sabar > the walls <2346 chowmah > of Jerusalem <3389 Y@ruwshalaim >, which <0834 >aher > were broken <6555 parats > down, and the gates <8179 sha<ar > thereof were consumed <0398 >akal > with fire <0784 >esh >.

 14 Then I went <5674 <abar > on <0413 >el > to the gate <8179 sha<ar > of the fountain <5869 <ayin >, and to the king's <4428 melek > pool <1295 b@rekah >: but [there was] no <0369 >ayin > place <4725 maqowm > for the beast <0929 b@hemah > [that was] under <8478 tachath > me to pass <5674 <abar >.

 15 Then went <5927 <alah > I up in the night <3915 layil > by the brook <5158 nachal >, and viewed <7663 sabar > the wall <2346 chowmah >, and turned <7725 shuwb > back <7725 shuwb >, and entered <0935 bow> > by the gate <8179 sha<ar > of the valley <1516 gay> >, and [so] returned <7725 shuwb >.

 16 And the rulers <5461 cagan > knew <3045 yada< > not whither <0575 >an > I went <1980 halak >, or what <4100 mah > I did <6213 <asah >; neither <3808 lo> > had I as yet told <5046 nagad > [it] to the Jews <3064 Y@huwdiy >, nor to the priests <3548 kohen >, nor to the nobles <2715 chor >, nor to the rulers <5461 cagan >, nor to the rest <3499 yether > that did <6213 <asah > the work <4399 m@la>kah >.

 17 Then said <0559 >amar > I unto them, Ye see <7200 ra>ah > the distress <7451 ra< > that we [are] in, how <0834 >aher > Jerusalem <3389 Y@ruwshalaim > [lieth] waste <2720 chareb >, and the gates <8179 sha<ar > thereof are burned <3341 yatsath > with fire <0784 >esh >: come <3212 yalak >, and let us build <1129 banah > up the wall <2346 chowmah > of Jerusalem <3389 Y@ruwshalaim >, that we be no <3808 lo> > more <5720 <Adiyn > a reproach <2781 cherpah >.

 18 Then I told <5046 nagad > them of the hand <3027 yad > of my God <0430 >elohiym > which <0834 >aher > was good <2896 towb > upon me; as also <0637 >aph > the king's <4428 melek > words <1697 dabar > that he had spoken <0559 >amar > unto me. And they said <0559 >amar >, Let us rise <6965 quwm > up and build <1129 banah >. So they strengthened <2388 chazaq > their hands <3027 yad > for [this] good <2896 towb > [work].

 19 But when Sanballat <5571 Canballat > the Horonite <2772 Choroniy >, and Tobiah <2900 Towbiyah > the servant <5650 <ebed >, the Ammonite <5984 <Ammowniy >, and Geshem <1654 Geshem > the Arabian <6163 <Arabiy >, heard <8085 shama< > [it], they laughed <3932 la<ag > us to scorn, and despised <0959 bazah > us, and said <0559 >amar >, What <4100 mah > [is] this <2088 zeh > thing <1697 dabar > that ye do <6213 <asah >? will ye rebel <4775 marad > against <5921 <al > the king <4428 melek >?

 20 Then answered <1697 dabar > I them, and said <0559 >amar > unto them, The God <0430 >elohiym > of heaven <8064 shamayim >, he will prosper <6743 tsalach > us; therefore we his servants <5650 <ebed > will arise <6965 quwm > and build <1129 banah >: but ye have no <0369 >ayin > portion <2506 cheleq >, nor right <6666 ts@daqah >, nor memorial <2146 zikrown >, in Jerusalem <3389 Y@ruwshalaim >.

Nehemiah 3

 1. Then Eliashib <0475 >Elyashiyb > the high <1419 gadowl > priest <3548 kohen > rose <6965 quwm > up with his brethren <0251 >ach > the priests <3548 kohen >, and they builded <1129 banah > the sheep <6629 tso>n > gate <8179 sha<ar >; they sanctified <6942 qadash > it, and set <5975 <amad > up the doors <1817 deleth > of it; even unto the tower <4026 migdal > of Meah <3968 Me>ah > they sanctified <6942 qadash > it, unto the tower <4026 migdal > of Hananeel <2606 Chanan>el >.

 2 And next unto him builded <1129 banah > the men <0582 >enowsh > of Jericho <3405 Y@riychow >. And next to them builded <1129 banah > Zaccur <2139 Zakkuwr > the son <1121 ben > of Imri <0556 >amtsah >.

 3 But the fish <1709 dag > gate <8179 sha<ar > did the sons <1121 ben > of Hassenaah <5574 C@nuw>ah > build <1129 banah >, who <1992 hem > [also] laid the beams <7136 qarah > thereof, and set <5975 <amad > up the doors <1817 deleth > thereof, the locks <4514 man<uwl > thereof, and the bars <1280 b@riyach > thereof.

 4 And next unto them repaired <2388 chazaq > Meremoth <4822 M@remowth > the son <1121 ben > of Urijah <0223 >Uwriyah >, the son <1121 ben > of Koz <6976 Qowts >. And next unto them repaired <2388 chazaq > Meshullam <4918 M@shullam > the son <1121 ben > of Berechiah <1296 Berekyah >, the son <1121 ben > of Meshezabeel <4898 M@sheyzab>el >. And next unto them repaired <2388 chazaq > Zadok <6659 Tsadowq > the son <1121 ben > of Baana <1195 Ba<ana> >.

 5 And next unto them the Tekoites <8621 T@qow<iy > repaired <2388 chazaq >; but their nobles <0117 >addiyr > put <0935 bow> > not their necks <6677 tsavva>r > to the work <5656 <abodah > of their Lord <0113 >adown >.

 7 And next unto them repaired <2388 chazaq > Melatiah <4424 M@latyah > the Gibeonite <1393 Gib<oniy >, and Jadon <3036 Yadown > the Meronothite <4824 Meronothiy >, the men <0582 >enowsh > of Gibeon <1391 Gib<own >, and of Mizpah <4709 Mitspah >, unto the throne <3678 kicce> > of the governor <6346 pechah > on this side <5676 <eber > the river <5104 nahar >.

 8 Next unto him repaired <2388 chazaq > Uzziel <5816 <Uzziy>el > the son <1121 ben > of Harhaiah <2736 Charhayah >, of the goldsmiths <6884 tsaraph >. Next unto him also repaired <2388 chazaq > Hananiah <2608 Chananyah > the son <1121 ben > of [one of] the apothecaries <7543 raqach >, and they fortified <5800 <azab > Jerusalem <3389 Y@ruwshalaim > unto the broad <7342 rachab > wall <2346 chowmah >.

 9 And next unto them repaired <2388 chazaq > Rephaiah <7509 R@phayah > the son <1121 ben > of Hur <2354 Chuwr >, the ruler <8269 sar > of the half <2677 chetsiy > part <6418 pelek > of Jerusalem <3389 Y@ruwshalaim >.

 10 And next unto them repaired <2388 chazaq > Jedaiah <3042 Y@dayah > the son <1121 ben > of Harumaph <2739 charuwmaph >, even over <5048 neged > against <5048 neged > his house <1004 bayith >. And next unto him repaired <2388 chazaq > Hattush <2407 Chattuwsh > the son <1121 ben > of Hashabniah <2813 Chashabn@yah >.

 11 Malchijah <4441 Malkiyah > the son <1121 ben > of Harim <2766 Charim >, and Hashub <2815 Chashshuwb > the son <1121 ben > of Pahathmoab <6355 Pachath Mow>ab >, repaired <2388 chazaq > the other <8145 sheniy > piece <4060 middah >, and the tower <4026 migdal > of the furnaces <8574 tannuwr >.

 12 And next unto him repaired <2388 chazaq > Shallum <7967 Shalluwm > the son <1121 ben > of Halohesh <3873 Lowchesh >, the ruler <8269 sar > of the half <2677 chetsiy > part <6418 pelek > of Jerusalem <3389 Y@ruwshalaim >, he and his daughters <1121 ben >.

 13 The valley <1516 gay> > gate <8179 sha<ar > repaired <2388 chazaq > Hanun <2586 Chanuwn >, and the inhabitants <3427 yashab > of Zanoah <2182 Zanowach >; they built <1129 banah > it, and set <5975 <amad > up the doors <1817 deleth > thereof, the locks <4514 man<uwl > thereof, and the bars <1280 b@riyach > thereof, and a thousand <0505 >eleph > cubits <0520 >ammah > on the wall <2346 chowmah > unto the dung <0830 >ashpoth > gate <8179 sha<ar >.

 14 But the dung <0830 >ashpoth > gate <8179 sha<ar > repaired <2388 chazaq > Malchiah <4441 Malkiyah > the son <1121 ben > of Rechab <7394 Rekab >, the ruler <8269 sar > of part <6418 pelek > of Bethhaccerem <1021 Beyth hak-Kerem >; he built <1129 banah > it, and set <5975 <amad > up the doors <1817 deleth > thereof, the locks <4514 man<uwl > thereof, and the bars <1280 b@riyach > thereof.

 15 But the gate <8179 sha<ar > of the fountain <5869 <ayin > repaired <2388 chazaq > Shallun <7968 Shalluwn > the son <1121 ben > of Colhozeh <3626 Kol-Chozeh >, the ruler <8269 sar > of part <6418 pelek > of Mizpah <4709 Mitspah >; he built <1129 banah > it, and covered <2926 talal > it, and set <5975 <amad > up the doors <1817 deleth > thereof, the locks <4514 man<uwl > thereof, and the bars <1280 b@riyach > thereof, and the wall <2346 chowmah > of the pool <1295 b@rekah > of Siloah <7975 Shiloach > by the king's <4428 melek > garden <1588 gan >, and unto the stairs <4609 ma<alah > that go <3381 yarad > down <3381 yarad > from the city <5892 <iyr > of David <1732 David >.

 16 After <0310 >achar > him repaired <2388 chazaq > Nehemiah <5166 N@chemyah > the son <1121 ben > of Azbuk <5802 <Azbuwq >, the ruler <8269 sar > of the half <2677 chetsiy > part <6418 pelek > of Bethzur <1049 Beyth Tsuwr >, unto [the place] over <5048 neged > against <5048 neged > the sepulchres <6913 qeber > of David <1732 David >, and to the pool <1295 b@rekah > that was made <6213 <asah >, and unto the house <1004 bayith > of the mighty <1368 gibbowr >.

After <0310 >achar > him repaired <2388 chazaq > Azariah <5838 <Azaryah > the son <1121 ben > of Maaseiah <4641 Ma<aseyah > the son <1121 ben > of Ananiah <6055 <Ananyah > by his house <1004 bayith >.

 21 Yea, forty <0705 >arba<iym > years <8141 shaneh > didst thou sustain <3557 kuwl > them in the wilderness <4057 midbar >, [so that] they lacked <2637 chacer > nothing <3808 lo> >; their clothes <8008 salmah > waxed not old <1086 balah >, and their feet <7272 regel > swelled <1216 batseq > not.

 22 Moreover thou gavest <5414 nathan > them kingdoms <4467 mamlakah > and nations <5971 <am >, and didst divide <2505 chalaq > them into corners <6285 pe>ah >: so they possessed <3423 yarash > the land <0776 >erets > of Sihon <5511 Ciychown >, and the land <0776 >erets > of the king <4428 melek > of Heshbon <2809 Cheshbown >, and the land <0776 >erets > of Og <5747 <Owg > king <4428 melek > of Bashan <1316 Bashan >.

 23 Their children <1121 ben > also multipliedst <7235 rabah > thou as the stars <3556 kowkab > of heaven <8064 shamayim >, and broughtest <0935 bow> > them into <0413 >el > the land <0776 >erets >, concerning which <0834 >aher > thou hadst promised <0559 >amar > to their fathers <1>, that they should go <0935 bow> > in to possess <3423 yarash > [it].

 31 Nevertheless for thy great <7227 rab > mercies <7356 racham >' sake thou didst not utterly consume <3615 kalah > them, nor <3808 lo> > forsake <5800 <azab > them; for thou [art] a gracious <2587 channuwn > and merciful <7349 rachuwm > God <0410 >el >.
