2Samuel   1

 1. Now it came <01961> to pass after <0310> the death <04194> of

Saul <07586>, when David <01732> was returned <07725> from the

slaughter <05221> of the Amalekites <06003>, and David <01732> had

abode <03427> two <08147> days <03117> in Ziklag <06860>;

2  It came <01961> even to pass on the third <07992> day <03117>,

that, behold <02009>, a man <0376> came <0935> out of the camp

<04264> from Saul <07586> with his clothes <0899> rent <07167>, and

earth <0127> upon his head <07218>: and [so] it was, when he came

<0935> to David <01732>, that he fell <05307> to the earth <0776>,

and did obeisance <07812>.

3  And David <01732> said <0559> unto him, From whence comest

<0935> thou? And he said <0559> unto him, Out of the camp <04264> of

Israel <03478> am I escaped <04422>.

 4  And David <01732> said <0559> unto him, How <04100> went <01961>

the matter <01697>? I pray <04994> thee, tell <05046> me. And he

answered <0559>, That the people <05971> are fled <05127> from the

battle <04421>, and many <07235> of the people <05971> also <01571>

are fallen <05307> and dead <04191>; and Saul <07586> and Jonathan

<03083> his son <01121> are dead <04191> also <01571>.

5  And David <01732> said <0559> unto the young <05288> man that

told <05046> him, How <0349> knowest <03045> thou that Saul <07586>

and Jonathan <03083> his son <01121> be dead <04191>?

6  And the young <05288> man that told <05046> him said <0559>, As

I happened <07136> by chance <07122> upon mount <02022> Gilboa

<01533>, behold <02009>, Saul <07586> leaned <08172> upon his spear

<02595>; and, lo <02009>, the chariots <07393> and horsemen <06571>

followed <01692> hard <01692> after him.

7  And when he looked <06437> behind <0310> him, he saw <07200> me,

and called <07121> unto me. And I answered <0559>, Here <02009> [am]

I.

8  And he said <0559> unto me, Who <04310> [art] thou? And I

answered <0559> him, I [am] an Amalekite <06003>.

 9  He said <0559> unto me again, Stand <05975>, I pray <04994>

thee, upon me, and slay <04191> me: for anguish <07661> is come

<0270> upon me, because <03588> my life <05315> [is] yet <05750>

whole <03605> in me.

10  So I stood <05975> upon him, and slew <04191> him, because

<03588> I was sure <03045> that he could not live <02421> after

<0310> that he was fallen <05307>: and I took <03947> the crown

<05145> that [was] upon his head <07218>, and the bracelet <0685>

that [was] on <05921> his arm <02220>, and have brought <0935> them

hither unto my lord <0113>.

 11. Then David <01732> took hold <02388> on his clothes <0899>, and

rent <07167> them; and likewise <01571> all <03605> the men <0582>

that [were] with him:

12  And they mourned <05594>, and wept <01058>, and fasted <06684>

until <05704> even <06153>, for Saul <07586>, and for Jonathan

<03083> his son <01121>, and for the people <05971> of the LORD

<03068>, and for the house <01004> of Israel <03478>; because

<03588> they were fallen <05307> by the sword <02719>.

13  And David <01732> said <0559> unto the young <05288> man that

told <05046> him, Whence [art] thou? And he answered <0559>, I [am]

the son <01121> of a stranger, an Amalekite <06003>.

14  And David <01732> said <0559> unto him, How <0349> wast thou

not afraid <03372> to stretch <07971> forth thine hand <03027> to

destroy <07843> the LORD'S <03068> anointed <04899>?

15  And David <01732> called <07121> one <0259> of the young

<05288> men, and said <0559>, Go <05066> near <05066>, [and] fall

<06293> upon him. And he smote <05221> him that he died <04191>.

16  And David <01732> said <0559> unto him, Thy blood <01818> [be]

upon thy head <07218>; for thy mouth <06310> hath testified <06030>

against thee, saying <0559>, I have slain <04191> the LORD'S <03068>

anointed <04899>.

 17. And David <01732> lamented <06969> with this <02063>

lamentation <07015> over <05921> Saul <07586> and over <05921>

Jonathan <03083> his son <01121>:

18  (Also he bade <0559> them teach <03925> the children <01121> of

Judah <03063> [the use of] the bow <07198>: behold <02009>, [it is]

written <03789> in the book <05612> of Jasher <03477>.)

19  The beauty <06643> of Israel <03478> is slain <02491> upon thy

high <01116> places: how <0349> are the mighty <01368> fallen

<05307>!

20  Tell <05046> [it] not in Gath <01661>, publish <01319> [it] not

in the streets <02351> of Askelon <0831>; lest <06435> the daughters

<01121> of the Philistines <06430> rejoice <08055>, lest <06435> the

daughters <01121> of the uncircumcised <06189> triumph <05937>.

21  Ye mountains <02022> of Gilboa <01533>, [let there be] no

<0408> dew <02919>, neither <0408> [let there be] rain <04306>, upon

you, nor fields <07704> of offerings <08641>: for there <08033> the

shield <04043> of the mighty <01368> is vilely <01602> cast <01602>

away, the shield <04043> of Saul <07586>, [as though he had] not

[been] anointed <04899> with oil <08081>.

22  From the blood <01818> of the slain <02491>, from the fat

<02459> of the mighty <01368>, the bow <07198> of Jonathan <03083>

turned <07734> not back <0268>, and the sword <02719> of Saul

<07586> returned <07725> not empty <07387>.

23  Saul <07586> and Jonathan <03083> [were] lovely <0157> and

pleasant <05273> in their lives <02416>, and in their death <04194>

they were not divided <06504>: they were swifter <07043> than eagles

<05404>, they were stronger <01396> than lions <0738>.

24  Ye daughters <01121> of Israel <03478>, weep <01058> over

<0413> Saul <07586>, who <04310> clothed <03847> you in scarlet

<08144>, with [other] delights <05730>, who <04310> put <05927> on

ornaments <05716> of gold <02091> upon your apparel <03830>.

25  How <0349> are the mighty <01368> fallen <05307> in the midst

<08432> of the battle <04421>! O Jonathan <03083>, [thou wast] slain

<02491> in thine high <01116> places.

26  I am distressed <06887> for thee, my brother <0251> Jonathan

<03083>: very <03966> pleasant <05276> hast thou been unto me: thy

love <0160> to me was wonderful <06381>, passing the love <0160> of

women <0802>.

27  How <0349> are the mighty <01368> fallen <05307>, and the

weapons <03627> of war <04421> perished <06>!

2Samuel   2

 1. And it came <01961> to pass after <0310> this <03651>, that

David <01732> enquired <07592> of the LORD <03068>, saying <0559>,

Shall I go <05927> up into any <0259> of the cities <05892> of Judah

<03063>? And the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto him, Go <05927> up.

And David <01732> said <0559>, Whither <0575> shall I go <05927> up?

And he said <0559>, Unto Hebron <02275>.

2  So David <01732> went <05927> up thither <08033>, and his two

<08147> wives <0802> also <01571>, Ahinoam <0293> the Jezreelitess

<03159>, and Abigail <026> Nabal's <05037> wife <0802> the Carmelite

<03761>.

3  And his men <0582> that [were] with him did David <01732> bring

<05927> up, every man <0376> with his household <01004>: and they

dwelt <03427> in the cities <05892> of Hebron <02275>.

4  And the men <0582> of Judah <03063> came <0935>, and there

<08033> they anointed <04886> David <01732> king <04428> over

<05921> the house <01004> of Judah <03063>. And they told <05046>

David <01732>, saying <0559>, [That] the men <0582> of Jabeshgilead

[were they] that buried <06912> Saul <07586>.

5  And David <01732> sent <07971> messengers <04397> unto the men

<0582> of Jabeshgilead, and said <0559> unto them, Blessed <01288>

[be] ye of the LORD <03068>, that ye have shewed <06213> this

<02088> kindness <02617> unto your lord <0113>, [even] unto Saul

<07586>, and have buried <06912> him.

 6  And now <06258> the LORD <03068> shew <06213> kindness <02617>

and truth <0571> unto you: and I also <01571> will requite <06213>

you this <02088> kindness <02896>, because <0834> ye have done

<06213> this <02088> thing <01697>.

7  Therefore now <06258> let your hands <03027> be strengthened

<02388>, and be ye valiant: for your master <0113> Saul <07586> is

dead <04191>, and also <01571> the house <01004> of Judah <03063>

have anointed <04886> me king <04428> over <05921> them.

 8. But Abner <074> the son <01121> of Ner <05369>, captain <08269>

of Saul's <07586> host <06635>, took <03947> Ishbosheth <0378> the

son <01121> of Saul <07586>, and brought <05674> him over <05674> to

Mahanaim <04266>;

9  And made him king <04427> over Gilead <01568>, and over the

Ashurites <0843>, and over Jezreel <03157>, and over Ephraim <0669>,

and over Benjamin <01144>, and over all <03605> Israel <03478>.

 10  Ishbosheth <0378> Saul's <07586> son <01121> [was] forty <0705>

years <08141> old <01121> when he began to reign <04427> over

<05921> Israel <03478>, and reigned <04427> two <08147> years

<08141>. But the house <01004> of Judah <03063> followed David

<01732>.

11  And the time that David <01732> was king <04428> in Hebron

<02275> over <05921> the house <01004> of Judah <03063> was seven

<07651> years <08141> and six <08337> months <02320>.

12  And Abner <074> the son <01121> of Ner <05369>, and the

servants <05650> of Ishbosheth <0378> the son <01121> of Saul

<07586>, went <03318> out from Mahanaim <04266> to Gibeon <01391>.

13  And Joab <03097> the son <01121> of Zeruiah <06870>, and the

servants <05650> of David <01732>, went <03318> out, and met <06298>

together <03162> by the pool <01295> of Gibeon <01391>: and they sat

<03427> down, the one <0428> on <05921> the one <02088> side of the

pool <01295>, and the other <0428> on <05921> the other <02088> side

of the pool <01295>.

14  And Abner <074> said <0559> to Joab <03097>, Let the young

<05288> men now <04994> arise <06965>, and play <07832> before

<06440> us. And Joab <03097> said <0559>, Let them arise <06965>.

15  Then there arose <06965> and went <05674> over <05674> by

number <04557> twelve of Benjamin <01144>, which [pertained] to

Ishbosheth <0378> the son <01121> of Saul <07586>, and twelve of the

servants <05650> of David <01732>.

16  And they caught <02388> every <0376> one <0376> his fellow

<07453> by the head <07218>, and [thrust] his sword <02719> in his

fellow's <07453> side <06654>; so they fell <05307> down together

<03162>: wherefore that place <04725> was called <07121>

Helkathhazzurim <02521>, which <0834> [is] in Gibeon <01391>.

 17  And there was a very <03966> sore <07188> battle <04421> that

day <03117>; and Abner <074> was beaten <05062>, and the men <0582>

of Israel <03478>, before <06440> the servants <05650> of David

<01732>.

 18. And there were three <07969> sons <01121> of Zeruiah <06870>

there <08033>, Joab <03097>, and Abishai <052>, and Asahel <0760>:

and Asahel <06214> [was as] light <07031> of foot <07272> as a wild

<07704> roe <06643>.

 19  And Asahel <06214> pursued <07291> after <0310> Abner <074>;

and in going <03212> he turned <05186> not to the right <03225> hand

nor to the left <08040> from following <0310> Abner <074>.

20  Then Abner <074> looked <06437> behind <0310> him, and said

<0559>, [Art] thou Asahel <06214>? And he answered <0559>, I [am].

21  And Abner <074> said <0559> to him, Turn <05186> thee aside

<05186> to thy right <03225> hand or <0176> to thy left <08040>, and

lay thee hold <0270> on one <0259> of the young <05288> men, and

take <03947> thee his armour <02488>. But Asahel <06214> would <014>

not turn <05493> aside from following <0310> of him.

22  And Abner <074> said <0559> again to Asahel <06214>, Turn

<05493> thee aside from following <0310> me: wherefore <04100>

should I smite <05221> thee to the ground <0776>? how <0349> then

should I hold <05375> up my face <06440> to Joab <03097> thy brother

<0251>?

23  Howbeit he refused <03985> to turn <05493> aside: wherefore

Abner <074> with the hinder <0310> end of the spear <02595> smote

<05221> him under <0413> the fifth <02570> [rib], that the spear

<02595> came <03318> out behind <0310> him; and he fell <05307> down

there <08033>, and died <04191> in the same <08478> place <08478>:

and it came <0935> to pass, [that] as many as came <0935> to the

place <04725> where Asahel <06214> fell <05307> down and died

<04191> stood <05975> still.

24  Joab <03097> also and Abishai <052> pursued <07291> after

<0310> Abner <074>: and the sun <08121> went <0935> down when they

were come <0935> to the hill <01389> of Ammah <0522>, that [lieth]

before Giah <01520> by the way <01870> of the wilderness <04057> of

Gibeon <01391>.

 25. And the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144> gathered <06908>

themselves together after <0310> Abner <074>, and became <01961> one

<0259> troop <092>, and stood <05975> on <05921> the top <07218> of

an hill <01389>.

26  Then Abner <074> called <07121> to Joab <03097>, and said

<0559>, Shall the sword <02719> devour <0398> for ever <05331>?

knowest <03045> thou not that it will be bitterness <04751> in the

latter <0314> end? how <05704> long <05704> shall it be then, ere

<03808> thou bid <0559> the people <05971> return <07725> from

following <0310> their brethren <0251>?

 27  And Joab <03097> said <0559>, [As] God <0430> liveth <02416>,

unless thou hadst spoken <01696>, surely <03588> then in the morning

<01242> the people <05971> had gone <05927> up every <0376> one

<0376> from following <0310> his brother <0251>.

 28  So Joab <03097> blew <08628> a trumpet <07782>, and all <03605>

the people <05971> stood <05975> still, and pursued <07291> after

<0310> Israel <03478> no <03808> more <05750>, neither <03808>

fought <03898> they any more.

 29  And Abner <074> and his men <0582> walked <01980> all <03605>

that night <03915> through the plain <06160>, and passed <05674>

over <05674> Jordan <03383>, and went <03212> through all <03605>

Bithron <01338>, and they came <0935> to Mahanaim <04266>.

30  And Joab <03097> returned <07725> from following <0310> Abner

<074>: and when he had gathered <06908> all <03605> the people

<05971> together, there lacked <06485> of David's <01732> servants

<05650> nineteen men <0376> and Asahel <06214>.

31  But the servants <05650> of David <01732> had smitten <05221>

of Benjamin <01144>, and of Abner's <074> men <0582>, [so that]

three <07969> hundred <03967> and threescore <08346> men <0376> died

<04191>.

32  And they took <05375> up Asahel <06214>, and buried <06912> him

in the sepulchre <06913> of his father <01>, which <0834> [was in]

Bethlehem <01035>. And Joab <03097> and his men <0582> went <03212>

all <03605> night <03915>, and they came <0935> to Hebron <02275> at

break <0215> of day <0215>.

2Samuel   3

 1. Now there was long <0752> war <04421> between <0996> the house

<01004> of Saul <07586> and the house <01004> of David <01732>: but

David <01732> waxed <01980> stronger <02390> and stronger <02390>,

and the house <01004> of Saul <07586> waxed <01980> weaker <01800>

and weaker <01800>.

2  And unto David <01732> were sons <01121> born <03205> in Hebron

<02275>: and his firstborn <01060> was Amnon <0550>, of Ahinoam

<0293> the Jezreelitess <03159>;

3  And his second <04932>, Chileab <03609>, of Abigail <026> the

wife <0802> of Nabal <05037> the Carmelite <03761>; and the third

<07992>, Absalom <053> the son <01121> of Maacah <04601> the

daughter <01323> of Talmai <08526> king <04428> of Geshur <01650>;

4  And the fourth <07243>, Adonijah <0138> the son <01121> of

Haggith <02294>; and the fifth <02549>, Shephatiah <08203> the son

<01121> of Abital <037>;

 5  And the sixth <08345>, Ithream <03507>, by Eglah <05698> David's

<01732> wife <0802>. These <0428> were born <03205> to David <01732>

in Hebron <02275>.

6  And it came <01961> to pass, while there was war <04421> between

<0996> the house <01004> of Saul <07586> and the house <01004> of

David <01732>, that Abner <074> made himself strong <02388> for the

house <01004> of Saul <07586>.

 7. And Saul <07586> had a concubine <06370>, whose name <08034>

[was] Rizpah <07532>, the daughter <01323> of Aiah <0345>: and

[Ishbosheth] said <0559> to Abner <074>, Wherefore <04069> hast thou

gone <0935> in unto my father's <01> concubine <06370>?

8  Then was Abner <074> very <03966> wroth <02734> for the words

<01697> of Ishbosheth <0378>, and said <0559>, [Am] I a dog's

<03611> head <07218>, which <0834> against Judah <03063> do <06213>

shew <06213> kindness <02617> this day <03117> unto the house

<01004> of Saul <07586> thy father <01>, to his brethren <0251>, and

to his friends <04828>, and have not delivered <04672> thee into the

hand <03027> of David <01732>, that thou chargest <06485> me to day

<03117> with a fault <05771> concerning this woman <0802>?

 9  So <03541> do <06213> God <0430> to Abner <074>, and more

<03254> also <03541>, except <03588>, as the LORD <03068> hath sworn

<07650> to David <01732>, even <03588> so <03651> I do <06213> to

him;

10  To translate <05674> the kingdom <04467> from the house <01004>

of Saul <07586>, and to set <06965> up the throne <03678> of David

<01732> over <05921> Israel <03478> and over <05921> Judah <03063>,

from Dan <01835> even to Beersheba <0884>.

 11  And he could <03201> not answer <07725> Abner <074> a word

<01697> again <05750>, because he feared <03372> him.

12  And Abner <074> sent <07971> messengers <04397> to David

<01732> on his behalf <08478>, saying <0559>, Whose <04310> [is] the

land <0776>? saying <0559> [also], Make <03772> thy league <01285>

with me, and, behold <02009>, my hand <03027> [shall be] with thee,

to bring <05437> about <05437> all <03605> Israel <03478> unto thee.

 13  And he said <0559>, Well <02896>; I will make <03772> a league

<01285> with thee: but one <0259> thing <01697> I require <07592> of

thee, that is, Thou shalt not see <07200> my face <06440>, except

thou first <06440> bring <0935> Michal <04324> Saul's <07586>

daughter <01323>, when thou comest <0935> to see <07200> my face

<06440>.

14  And David <01732> sent <07971> messengers <04397> to Ishbosheth

<0378> Saul's <07586> son <01121>, saying <0559>, Deliver <05414>

[me] my wife <0802> Michal <04324>, which <0834> I espoused <0781>

to me for an hundred <03967> foreskins <06190> of the Philistines

<06430>.

15  And Ishbosheth <0378> sent <07971>, and took <03947> her from

[her] husband <0376>, [even] from Phaltiel <06409> the son <01121>

of Laish <03919>.

16  And her husband <0376> went <03212> with her along <01980>

weeping <01058> behind <0310> her to Bahurim <0980>. Then said

<0559> Abner <074> unto him, Go <03212>, return <07725>. And he

returned <07725>.

17  And Abner <074> had communication <01697> with the elders

<02205> of Israel <03478>, saying <0559>, Ye sought <01245> for

David <01732> in times <08543> past <08032> [to be] king <04428>

over <05921> you:

18  Now <06258> then do <06213> [it]: for the LORD <03068> hath

spoken <0559> of David <01732>, saying <0559>, By the hand <03027>

of my servant <05650> David <01732> I will save <03467> my people

<05971> Israel <03478> out of the hand <03027> of the Philistines

<06430>, and out of the hand <03027> of all <03605> their enemies

<0341>.

 19  And Abner <074> also <01571> spake <01696> in the ears <0241>

of Benjamin <01144>: and Abner <074> went <03212> also <01571> to

speak <01696> in the ears <0241> of David <01732> in Hebron <02275>

all <03605> that seemed <05869> good <02896> to Israel <03478>, and

that seemed <05869> good to the whole <03605> house <01004> of

Benjamin <01144>.

 20  So Abner <074> came <0935> to David <01732> to Hebron <02275>,

and twenty <06242> men <0582> with him. And David <01732> made

<06213> Abner <074> and the men <0582> that [were] with him a feast

<04960>.

 21  And Abner <074> said <0559> unto David <01732>, I will arise

<06965> and go <03212>, and will gather <06908> all <03605> Israel

<03478> unto my lord <0113> the king <04428>, that they may make

<03772> a league <01285> with thee, and that thou mayest reign

<04427> over all <03605> that thine heart <05315> desireth <08378>.

And David <01732> sent <07971> Abner <074> away; and he went <03212>

in peace <07965>.

 22. And, behold <02009>, the servants <05650> of David <01732> and

Joab <03097> came <0935> from [pursuing] a troop <01416>, and

brought <0935> in a great <07227> spoil <07998> with them: but Abner

<074> [was] not with David <01732> in Hebron <02275>; for he had

sent <07971> him away, and he was gone <03212> in peace <07965>.

23  When Joab <03097> and all <03605> the host <06635> that [was]

with him were come <0935>, they told <05046> Joab <03097>, saying

<0559>, Abner <074> the son <01121> of Ner <05369> came <0935> to

the king <04428>, and he hath sent <07971> him away, and he is gone

<03212> in peace <07965>.

24  Then Joab <03097> came <0935> to the king <04428>, and said

<0559>, What <04100> hast thou done <06213>? behold <02009>, Abner

<074> came <0935> unto thee; why <04100> [is] it [that] thou hast

sent <07971> him away, and he is quite gone <03212>?

25  Thou knowest <03045> Abner <074> the son <01121> of Ner

<05369>, that he came <0935> to deceive <06601> thee, and to know

<03045> thy going <04161> out and thy coming <04126> in, and to know

<03045> all <03605> that thou doest <06213>.

26  And when Joab <03097> was come <03318> out from David <01732>,

he sent <07971> messengers <04397> after <0310> Abner <074>, which

brought <07725> him again <05750> from the well <0953> of Sirah

<05626>: but David <01732> knew <03045> [it] not.

27  And when Abner <074> was returned <07725> to Hebron <02275>,

Joab <03097> took him aside <05186> in the gate <08179> to speak

<01696> with him quietly <07987>, and smote <05221> him there

<08033> under the fifth <02570> [rib], that he died <04191>, for the

blood <01818> of Asahel <06214> his brother <0251>.

28  And afterward when David <01732> heard <08085> [it], he said

<0559>, I and my kingdom <04467> [are] guiltless <05355> before

<05973> the LORD <03068> for ever <05769> from the blood <01818> of

Abner <074> the son <01121> of Ner <05369>:

29  Let it rest <02342> on <05921> the head <07218> of Joab

<03097>, and on <0413> all <03605> his father's <01> house <01004>;

and let there not fail <03772> from the house <01004> of Joab

<03097> one that hath an issue <02100>, or that is a leper <06879>,

or that leaneth <02388> on a staff <06418>, or that falleth <05307>

on the sword <02719>, or that lacketh <02638> bread <03899>.

30  So Joab <03097> and Abishai <052> his brother <0251> slew

<02026> Abner <074>, because he had slain <04191> their brother

<0251> Asahel <06214> at Gibeon <01391> in the battle <04421>.

31  And David <01732> said <0559> to Joab <03097>, and to all

<03605> the people <05971> that [were] with him, Rend <07167> your

clothes <0899>, and gird <02296> you with sackcloth <08242>, and

mourn <05594> before <06440> Abner <074>. And king <04428> David

<01732> [himself] followed the bier <04296>.

32  And they buried <06912> Abner <074> in Hebron <02275>: and the

king <04428> lifted <05375> up his voice <06963>, and wept <01058>

at the grave <06913> of Abner <074>; and all <03605> the people

<05971> wept <01058>.

 33  And the king <04428> lamented <06969> over <0413> Abner <074>,

and said <0559>, Died <04191> Abner <074> as a fool <05036> dieth

<04194>?

34  Thy hands <03027> [were] not bound <0631>, nor <03808> thy feet

<07272> put <05056> into fetters <05178>: as a man <01121> falleth

<05307> before <06440> wicked <05766> men <01121>, [so] fellest

<05307> thou. And all <03605> the people <05971> wept <01058> again

<03254> over <05921> him.

35  And when all <03605> the people <05971> came <0935> to cause

David <01732> to eat <01262> meat <03899> while it was yet <05750>

day <03117>, David <01732> sware <07650>, saying <0559>, So <03541>

do <06213> God <0430> to me, and more <03254> also <03541>, if I

taste <02938> bread <03899>, or <0176> ought <03972> else, till

<06440> the sun <08121> be down <0935>.

 36  And all <03605> the people <05971> took <05384> notice <05234>

[of it], and it pleased them: as whatsoever the king <04428> did

<06213> pleased all <03605> the people <05971>.

37  For all <03605> the people <05971> and all <03605> Israel

<03478> understood <03045> that day <03117> that it was not of the

king <04428> to slay <04191> Abner <074> the son <01121> of Ner

<05369>.

38  And the king <04428> said <0559> unto his servants <05650>,

Know <03045> ye not that there is a prince <08269> and a great

<01419> man fallen <05307> this <02088> day <03117> in Israel

<03478>?

39  And I [am] this day <03117> weak <07390>, though anointed

<04886> king <04428>; and these <0428> men <0582> the sons <01121>

of Zeruiah <06870> [be] too hard <07186> for me: the LORD <03068>

shall reward <07999> the doer <06218> of evil <07451> according to

his wickedness <07451>.

2Samuel   4

 1. And when Saul's <07586> son <01121> heard <08085> that Abner

<074> was dead <04191> in Hebron <02275>, his hands <03027> were

feeble <07503>, and all <03605> the Israelites <03478> were troubled

<0926>.

 2  And Saul's <07586> son <01121> had <01961> two <08147> men

<0582> [that were] captains <08269> of bands <01416>: the name

<08034> of the one <0259> [was] Baanah <01195>, and the name <08034>

of the other <08145> Rechab <07394>, the sons <01121> of Rimmon

<07417> a Beerothite <0886>, of the children <01121> of Benjamin

<01144>: (for Beeroth <0881> also <01571> was reckoned <02803> to

Benjamin <01144>:

3  And the Beerothites <0886> fled <01272> to Gittaim <01664>, and

were sojourners <01481> there <08033> until <05704> this <02088> day

<03117>.)

 4  And Jonathan <03083>, Saul's <07586> son <01121>, had a son

<01121> [that was] lame <05223> of [his] feet <07272>. He was five

<02568> years <08141> old <01121> when the tidings <08052> came

<0935> of Saul <07586> and Jonathan <03083> out of Jezreel <03157>,

and his nurse <0539> took <05375> him up, and fled <05127>: and it

came <01961> to pass, as she made haste <02648> to flee <05127>,

that he fell <05307>, and became <06452> lame <06452>. And his name

<08034> [was] Mephibosheth <04648>.

5  And the sons <01121> of Rimmon <07417> the Beerothite <0886>,

Rechab <07394> and Baanah <01195>, went <03212>, and came <0935>

about the heat <02527> of the day <03117> to the house <01004> of

Ishbosheth <0378>, who <04310> lay <07901> on a bed <04904> at noon

<06672>.

6  And they came <0935> thither into <05704> the midst <08432> of

the house <01004>, [as though] they would have fetched <03947> wheat

<02406>; and they smote <05221> him under <0413> the fifth <02570>

[rib]: and Rechab <07394> and Baanah <01195> his brother <0251>

escaped <04422>.

7  For when they came <0935> into the house <01004>, he lay <07901>

on <05921> his bed <04296> in his bedchamber, and they smote <05221>

him, and slew <04191> him, and beheaded him, and took <03947> his

head <07218>, and gat <03212> them away <03212> through <01870> the

plain <06160> all <03605> night <03915>.

8  And they brought <0935> the head <07218> of Ishbosheth <0378>

unto David <01732> to Hebron <02275>, and said <0559> to the king

<04428>, Behold <02009> the head <07218> of Ishbosheth <0378> the

son <01121> of Saul <07586> thine enemy <0341>, which <0834> sought

<01245> thy life <05315>; and the LORD <03068> hath avenged my lord

<03068> the king <04428> this <02088> day <03117> of Saul <07586>,

and of his seed <02233>.

 9. And David <01732> answered <06030> Rechab <07394> and Baanah

<01195> his brother <0251>, the sons of Rimmon <07417> the

Beerothite <0886>, and said <0559> unto them, [As] the LORD <03068>

liveth <02416>, who <0834> hath redeemed <06299> my soul <05315> out

of all <03605> adversity <06869>,

10  When one told <05046> me, saying <0559>, Behold <02009>, Saul

<07586> is dead <04191>, thinking to have brought <01319> good

<01319> tidings <01319>, I took hold <0270> of him, and slew <02026>

him in Ziklag <06860>, who <0834> [thought] that I would have given

<05414> him a reward <01309> for his tidings <01309>:

 11  How <0637> much <0637> more, when <03588> wicked <07563> men

<0582> have slain <02026> a righteous <06662> person <0376> in his

own house <01004> upon his bed <04904>? shall I not therefore now

<06258> require <01245> his blood <01818> of your hand <03027>, and

take <01197> you away from the earth <0776>?

12  And David <01732> commanded <06680> his young <05288> men, and

they slew <02026> them, and cut <07112> off their hands <03027> and

their feet <07272>, and hanged <08518> [them] up over <05921> the

pool <01295> in Hebron <02275>. But they took <03947> the head

<07218> of Ishbosheth <0378>, and buried <06912> [it] in the

sepulchre <06913> of Abner <074> in Hebron <02275>.

2Samuel   5

 1. Then came <0935> all <03605> the tribes <07626> of Israel

<03478> to David <01732> unto Hebron <02275>, and spake <0559>,

saying <0559>, Behold <02005>, we [are] thy bone <06106> and thy

flesh <01320>.

2  Also <01571> in time past <08032>, when Saul <07586> was king

<04428> over <05921> us, thou wast <01961> he that leddest <03318>

out and broughtest <0935> in Israel <03478>: and the LORD <03068>

said <0559> to thee, Thou shalt feed <07462> my people <05971>

Israel <03478>, and thou shalt be a captain <05057> over <05921>

Israel <03478>.

 3  So all <03605> the elders <02205> of Israel <03478> came <0935>

to the king <04428> to Hebron <02275>; and king <04428> David

<01732> made <03772> a league <01285> with them in Hebron <02275>

before <06440> the LORD <03068>: and they anointed <04886> David

<01732> king <04428> over <05921> Israel <03478>.

 4  David <01732> [was] thirty <07970> years <08141> old <01121>

when <03588> he began to reign <04427>, [and] he reigned <04427>

forty <0705> years <08141>.

 5  In Hebron <02275> he reigned <04427> over <05921> Judah <03063>

seven <07651> years <08141> and six <08337> months <02320>: and in

Jerusalem <03389> he reigned <04427> thirty <07970> and three

<07969> years <08141> over <05921> all <03605> Israel <03478> and

Judah <03063>.

 6. And the king <04428> and his men <0582> went <03212> to

Jerusalem <03389> unto the Jebusites <02983>, the inhabitants

<03427> of the land <0776>: which spake <0559> unto David <01732>,

saying <0559>, Except thou take <05493> away <05493> the blind

<05787> and the lame <06455>, thou shalt not come <0935> in hither:

thinking <0559>, David <01732> cannot <03808> come <0935> in hither.

7  Nevertheless David <01732> took <03920> the strong <04686> hold

<04686> of Zion <06726>: the same <01931> [is] the city <05892> of

David <01732>.

8  And David <01732> said <0559> on that day <03117>, Whosoever

getteth <05060> up to the gutter <06794>, and smiteth <05221> the

Jebusites <02983>, and the lame <06455> and the blind <05787>, [that

are] hated <08130> of David's <01732> soul <05315>, [he shall be

chief and captain]. Wherefore <04100> they said <0559>, The blind

<05787> and the lame <06455> shall not come <0935> into <0413> the

house <01004>.

9  So David <01732> dwelt <03427> in the fort <04686>, and called

<07121> it the city <05892> of David <01732>. And David <01732>

built <01129> round <05439> about from Millo <04407> and inward

<01004>.

10  And David <01732> went <03212> on, and grew great <01419>, and

the LORD <03068> God <0430> of hosts <06635> [was] with him.

 11. And Hiram <02438> king <04428> of Tyre <06865> sent <07971>

messengers <04397> to David <01732>, and cedar <0730> trees <06086>,

and carpenters <02796>, and masons: and they built <01129> David

<01732> an house <01004>.

12  And David <01732> perceived <03045> that the LORD <03068> had

established <03559> him king <04428> over <05921> Israel <03478>,

and that he had exalted <05375> his kingdom <04467> for his people

<05971> Israel's <03478> sake <05668>.

13  And David <01732> took <03947> [him] more <05750> concubines

<06370> and wives <0802> out of Jerusalem <03389>, after <0310> he

was come <0935> from Hebron <02275>: and there were yet <05750> sons

<01121> and daughters <01121> born <03205> to David <01732>.

14  And these <0428> [be] the names <08034> of those that were born

<03209> unto him in Jerusalem <03389>; Shammua <08051>, and Shobab

<07727>, and Nathan <05416>, and Solomon <08010>,

15  Ibhar <02984> also, and Elishua <0474>, and Nepheg <05298>, and

Japhia <03309>,

16  And Elishama <0476>, and Eliada <0450>, and Eliphalet <0467>.

 17. But when the Philistines <06430> heard <08085> that they had

anointed <04886> David <01732> king <04428> over <05921> Israel

<03478>, all <03605> the Philistines <06430> came <05927> up to seek

<01245> David <01732>; and David <01732> heard <08085> [of it], and

went <03381> down <03381> to the hold <04686>.

18  The Philistines <06430> also came <0935> and spread <05203>

themselves in the valley <06010> of Rephaim <07497>.

19  And David <01732> enquired <07592> of the LORD <03068>, saying

<0559>, Shall I go <05927> up to the Philistines <06430>? wilt thou

deliver <05414> them into mine hand <03027>? And the LORD <03068>

said <0559> unto David <01732>, Go <05927> up: for I will doubtless

deliver <05414> the Philistines <06430> into thine hand <03027>.

20  And David <01732> came <0935> to Baalperazim <01188>, and David

<01732> smote <05221> them there <08033>, and said <0559>, The LORD

<03068> hath broken <06555> forth upon mine enemies <0341> before

<06440> me, as the breach <06556> of waters <04325>. Therefore he

called <07121> the name <08034> of that place <04725> Baalperazim

<01188>.

21  And there <08033> they left <05800> their images <06091>, and

David <01732> and his men <0582> burned <05375> them.

22  And the Philistines <06430> came <05927> up yet <05750> again

<03254>, and spread <05203> themselves in the valley <06010> of

Rephaim <07497>.

23  And when David <01732> enquired <07592> of the LORD <03068>, he

said <0559>, Thou shalt not go <05927> up; [but] fetch a compass

<05437> behind <0310> them, and come <0935> upon them over <04136>

against <04136> the mulberry <01057> trees.

24  And let it be, when thou hearest <08085> the sound <06963> of a

going <06807> in the tops <07218> of the mulberry <01057> trees,

that then <0227> thou shalt bestir <02782> thyself: for then <0227>

shall the LORD <03068> go <03318> out before <06440> thee, to smite

<05221> the host <04264> of the Philistines <06430>.

 25  And David <01732> did <06213> so <03651>, as the LORD <03068>

had commanded <06680> him; and smote <05221> the Philistines <06430>

from Geba <01387> until <05704> thou come <0935> to Gazer <01507>.

2Samuel   6

 1. Again <05750>, David <01732> gathered <03254> together all

<03605> [the] chosen <0970> [men] of Israel <03478>, thirty <07970>

thousand <0505>.

2  And David <01732> arose <06965>, and went <03212> with all

<03605> the people <05971> that [were] with him from Baale <01184>

of Judah <03063>, to bring <05927> up from thence <08033> the ark

<0727> of God <0430>, whose <0834> name <08034> is called <07121> by

the name <08034> of the LORD <03068> of hosts <06635> that dwelleth

<03427> [between] the cherubims <03742>.

3  And they set <07392> the ark <0727> of God <0430> upon a new

<02319> cart <05699>, and brought <05375> it out of the house

<01004> of Abinadab <041> that [was] in Gibeah <01390>: and Uzzah

<05798> and Ahio <0283>, the sons <01121> of Abinadab <041>, drave

<05090> the new <02319> cart <05699>.

4  And they brought <05375> it out of the house <01004> of Abinadab

<041> which <0834> [was] at Gibeah <01390>, accompanying <05973> the

ark <0727> of God <0430>: and Ahio <0283> went <01980> before

<06440> the ark <0727>.

5  And David <01732> and all <03605> the house <01004> of Israel

<03478> played <07832> before <06440> the LORD <03068> on all

<03605> manner of [instruments made of] fir <01265> wood <06086>,

even on harps <03658>, and on psalteries <05035>, and on timbrels

<08596>, and on cornets <04517>, and on cymbals <06767>.

 6. And when they came <0935> to Nachon's <05225> threshingfloor

<01637>, Uzzah <05798> put <07971> forth <07971> [his hand] to the

ark <0727> of God <0430>, and took hold <0270> of it; for the oxen

<01241> shook <08058> [it].

7  And the anger <0639> of the LORD <03068> was kindled <02734>

against Uzzah <05798>; and God <0430> smote <05221> him there

<08033> for [his] error <07944>; and there <08033> he died <04191>

by the ark <0727> of God <0430>.

8  And David <01732> was displeased <02734>, because the LORD

<03068> had made <06555> a breach <06556> upon Uzzah <05798>: and he

called <07121> the name of the place <04725> Perezuzzah <06560> to

this <02088> day <03117>.

9  And David <01732> was afraid <03372> of the LORD <03068> that

day <03117>, and said <0559>, How shall the ark <0727> of the LORD

<03068> come <0935> to me?

 10  So David <01732> would <014> not remove <05493> the ark <0727>

of the LORD <03068> unto him into <05921> the city <05892> of David

<01732>: but David <01732> carried <05186> it aside <05186> into the

house <01004> of Obededom <05654> the Gittite <01663>.

11  And the ark <0727> of the LORD <03068> continued <03427> in the

house <01004> of Obededom <05654> the Gittite <01663> three <07969>

months <02320>: and the LORD <03068> blessed <01288> Obededom

<05654>, and all <03605> his household <01004>.

 12. And it was told <05046> king <04428> David <01732>, saying

<0559>, The LORD <03068> hath blessed <01288> the house <01004> of

Obededom <05654>, and all <03605> that [pertaineth] unto him,

because <05668> of the ark <0727> of God <0430>. So David <01732>

went <03212> and brought <05927> up the ark <0727> of God <0430>

from the house <01004> of Obededom <05654> into the city <05892> of

David <01732> with gladness <08057>.

13  And it was [so], that when <03588> they that bare <05375> the

ark <0727> of the LORD <03068> had gone <06805> six <08337> paces

<06806>, he sacrificed <02076> oxen <07794> and fatlings <04806>.

14  And David <01732> danced <03769> before <06440> the LORD

<03068> with all <03605> [his] might <05797>; and David <01732>

[was] girded <02296> with a linen <0906> ephod <0646>.

15  So David <01732> and all <03605> the house <01004> of Israel

<03478> brought <05927> up the ark <0727> of the LORD <03068> with

shouting <08643>, and with the sound <06963> of the trumpet <07782>.

16  And as the ark <0727> of the LORD <03068> came <0935> into the

city <05892> of David <01732>, Michal <04324> Saul's <07586>

daughter <01323> looked <08259> through <01157> a window <02474>,

and saw <07200> king <04428> David <01732> leaping <06339> and

dancing <03769> before <06440> the LORD <03068>; and she despised

<0959> him in her heart <03820>.

17  And they brought <0935> in the ark <0727> of the LORD <03068>,

and set <03322> it in his place <04725>, in the midst <08432> of the

tabernacle <0168> that David had pitched <05186> for it: and David

<01732> offered <05927> burnt <05930> offerings and peace <08002>

offerings before <06440> the LORD <03068>.

18  And as soon as David <01732> had made an end <03615> of

offering <05927> burnt <05930> offerings and peace <08002>

offerings, he blessed <01288> the people <05971> in the name <08034>

of the LORD <03068> of hosts <06635>.

19  And he dealt <02505> among all <03605> the people <05971>,

[even] among the whole <03605> multitude <01995> of Israel <03478>,

as well to the women <0802> as men <0376>, to every <0376> one

<0376> a cake <02471> of bread <03899>, and a good piece <0829> [of

flesh <0829>], and a flagon <0809> [of wine]. So all <03605> the

people <05971> departed <03212> every <0376> one <0376> to his house

<01004>.

 20. Then David <01732> returned <07725> to bless <01288> his

household <01004>. And Michal <04324> the daughter <01323> of Saul

<07586> came <03318> out to meet <07125> David <01732>, and said

<0559>, How <04100> glorious <03513> was the king <04428> of Israel

<03478> to day, who <0834> uncovered <01540> himself to day <03117>

in the eyes <05869> of the handmaids <0519> of his servants <05650>,

as one <0259> of the vain <07386> fellows shamelessly <01540>

uncovereth <01540> himself!

21  And David <01732> said <0559> unto Michal <04324>, [It was]

before <06440> the LORD <03068>, which <0834> chose <0977> me before

thy father <01>, and before all <03605> his house <01004>, to

appoint <06680> me ruler <05057> over <05921> the people <05971> of

the LORD <03068>, over <05921> Israel <03478>: therefore will I play

<07832> before <06440> the LORD <03068>.

22  And I will yet <05750> be more vile <07043> than thus <02063>,

and will be base <08217> in mine own sight <05869>: and of the

maidservants <0519> which <0834> thou hast spoken <0559> of, of them

shall I be had in honour <03513>.

23  Therefore Michal <04324> the daughter <01323> of Saul <07586>

had no <03808> child <03206> unto the day <03117> of her death

<04194>.

2Samuel   7

 1. And it came <01961> to pass, when <03588> the king <04428> sat

<03427> in his house <01004>, and the LORD <03068> had given him

rest <05117> round <05439> about from all <03605> his enemies

<0341>;

2  That the king <04428> said <0559> unto Nathan <05416> the

prophet <05030>, See <07200> now <04994>, I dwell <03427> in an

house <01004> of cedar <0730>, but the ark <0727> of God <0430>

dwelleth <03427> within <08432> curtains <03407>.

 3  And Nathan <05416> said <0559> to the king <04428>, Go <03212>,

do <06213> all <03605> that [is] in thine heart <03824>; for the

LORD <03068> [is] with thee.

 4. And it came <01961> to pass that night <03915>, that the word

<01697> of the LORD <03068> came <01961> unto Nathan <05416>, saying

<0559>,

 5  Go <03212> and tell <0559> my servant <05650> David <01732>,

Thus <03541> saith <0559> the LORD <03068>, Shalt thou build <01129>

me an house <01004> for me to dwell <03427> in?

 6  Whereas <03588> I have not dwelt <03427> in [any] house <01004>

since the time <03117> that I brought <05927> up the children

<01121> of Israel <03478> out of Egypt <04714>, even to this <02088>

day <03117>, but have walked <01980> in a tent <0168> and in a

tabernacle <04908>.

 7  In all <03605> [the places] wherein <0834> I have walked <01980>

with all <03605> the children <01121> of Israel <03478> spake

<01696> I a word <01697> with any <0259> of the tribes <07626> of

Israel <03478>, whom <0834> I commanded <06680> to feed <07462> my

people <05971> Israel <03478>, saying <0559>, Why <04100> build

<01129> ye not me an house <01004> of cedar <0730>?

8  Now <06258> therefore so shalt thou say <0559> unto my servant

<05650> David <01732>, Thus <03541> saith <0559> the LORD <03068> of

hosts <06635>, I took <03947> thee from the sheepcote <05116>, from

following <0310> the sheep <06629>, to be ruler <05057> over <05921>

my people <05971>, over <05921> Israel <03478>:

9  And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest <01980>, and have

cut <03772> off all <03605> thine enemies <0341> out of thy sight

<06440>, and have made <06213> thee a great <01419> name <08034>,

like unto the name <08034> of the great <01419> [men] that [are] in

the earth <0776>.

 10  Moreover I will appoint <07760> a place <04725> for my people

<05971> Israel <03478>, and will plant <05193> them, that they may

dwell <07931> in a place <08478> of their own, and move <07264> no

<03808> more <05750>; neither <03808> shall the children <01121> of

wickedness <05766> afflict <06031> them any more <03254>, as

beforetime <07223>,

 11  And as since <04480> the time <03117> that I commanded <06680>

judges <08199> [to be] over <05921> my people <05971> Israel

<03478>, and have caused thee to rest <05117> from all <03605> thine

enemies <0341>. Also the LORD <03068> telleth <05046> thee that he

will make <06213> thee an house <01004>.

12  And when <03588> thy days <03117> be fulfilled <04390>, and

thou shalt sleep <07901> with thy fathers <01>, I will set <06965>

up thy seed <02233> after <0310> thee, which <0834> shall proceed

<03318> out of thy bowels <04578>, and I will establish <03559> his

kingdom <04467>.

13  He shall build <01129> an house <01004> for my name <08034>,

and I will stablish <03559> the throne <03678> of his kingdom

<04467> for ever <05769>.

14  I will be his father <01>, and he shall be my son <01121>. If

<0834> he commit <05753> iniquity <05753>, I will chasten <03198>

him with the rod <07626> of men <0582>, and with the stripes <05061>

of the children <01121> of men <0120>:

15  But my mercy <02617> shall not depart <05493> away from him, as

I took <05493> [it] from Saul <07586>, whom <0834> I put <05493>

away <05493> before <06440> thee.

16  And thine house <01004> and thy kingdom <04467> shall be

established <0539> for ever <05769> before <06440> thee: thy throne

<03678> shall be established <03559> for ever <05769>.

17  According to all <03605> these <0428> words <01697>, and

according to all <03605> this <02088> vision <02384>, so <03651> did

Nathan <05416> speak <01696> unto David <01732>.

 18. Then went <0935> king <04428> David <01732> in, and sat <03427>

before <06440> the LORD <03068>, and he said <0559>, Who <04310>

[am] I, O Lord <0136> GOD <03069>? and what <04310> [is] my house

<01004>, that thou hast brought <0935> me hitherto <01988>?

19  And this <02063> was yet <05750> a small <06994> thing in thy

sight <05869>, O Lord <0136> GOD <03069>; but thou hast spoken

<01696> also <01571> of thy servant's <05650> house <01004> for a

great <07350> while <07350> to come. And [is] this <02063> the

manner <08452> of man <0120>, O Lord <0136> GOD <03069>?

 20  And what <04100> can David <01732> say <01696> more <05750>

unto thee? for thou, Lord <0136> GOD <03069>, knowest <03045> thy

servant <05650>.

21  For thy word's <01697> sake <05668>, and according to thine own

heart <03820>, hast thou done <06213> all <03605> these <02063>

great <01420> things, to make thy servant <05650> know <03045>

[them].

 22  Wherefore thou art great <01431>, O LORD <03068> God <0430>:

for [there is] none <0369> like <03644> thee, neither <0369> [is

there any] God <0430> beside <02108> thee, according to all <03605>

that we have heard <08085> with our ears <0241>.

 23  And what <04310> one <0259> nation <01471> in the earth <0776>

[is] like thy people <05971>, [even] like Israel <03478>, whom

<0834> God <0430> went <01980> to redeem <06299> for a people

<05971> to himself, and to make <07760> him a name <08034>, and to

do <06213> for you great <01420> things and terrible <03372>, for

thy land <0776>, before <06440> thy people <05971>, which <0834>

thou redeemedst <06299> to thee from Egypt <04714>, [from] the

nations <01471> and their gods <0430>?

24  For thou hast confirmed <03559> to thyself thy people <05971>

Israel <03478> [to be] a people <05971> unto thee for ever <05769>:

and thou, LORD <03068>, art become <01961> their God <0430>.

 25  And now <06258>, O LORD <03068> God <0430>, the word <01697>

that thou hast spoken <01696> concerning <05921> thy servant

<05650>, and concerning <05921> his house <01004>, establish <06965>

[it] for ever <05769>, and do <06213> as thou hast said <01696>.

26  And let thy name <08034> be magnified <01431> for ever <05769>,

saying <0559>, The LORD <03068> of hosts <06635> [is] the God <0430>

over <05921> Israel <03478>: and let the house <01004> of thy

servant <05650> David <01732> be established <03559> before <06440>

thee.

27  For thou, O LORD <03068> of hosts <06635>, God <0430> of Israel

<03478>, hast revealed <01540> to thy servant <05650>, saying

<0559>, I will build <01129> thee an house <01004>: therefore hath

thy servant <05650> found <04672> in his heart <03820> to pray

<06419> this <02063> prayer <08605> unto thee.

28  And now <06258>, O Lord <0136> GOD <03069>, thou [art] that God

<0430>, and thy words <01697> be true <0571>, and thou hast promised

<01696> this <02088> goodness <02896> unto thy servant <05650>:

29  Therefore now <06258> let it please <02894> thee to bless

<01288> the house <01004> of thy servant <05650>, that it may

continue <01961> for ever <05769> before <06440> thee: for thou, O

Lord <0136> GOD <03069>, hast spoken <01696> [it]: and with thy

blessing <01293> let the house <01004> of thy servant <05650> be

blessed <01288> for ever <05769>.

2Samuel   8

 1. And after <0310> this <03651> it came <01961> to pass, that

David <01732> smote <05221> the Philistines <06430>, and subdued

<03665> them: and David <01732> took <03947> Methegammah <04965> out

of the hand <03027> of the Philistines <06430>.

2  And he smote <05221> Moab <04124>, and measured <04058> them

with a line <02256>, casting <07901> them down <07901> to the ground

<0776>; even with two <08147> lines <02256> measured <04058> he to

put to death <04191>, and with one full <04393> line <02256> to keep

alive <02421>. And [so] the Moabites <04124> became <01961> David's

<01732> servants <05650>, [and] brought <05375> gifts <04503>.

3  David <01732> smote <05221> also Hadadezer <01909>, the son

<01121> of Rehob <07340>, king <04428> of Zobah <06678>, as he went

<03212> to recover <07725> his border <03027> at the river <05104>

Euphrates <06578>.

 4  And David <01732> took <03920> from him a thousand <0505>

[chariots], and seven <07651> hundred <03967> horsemen <06571>, and

twenty <06242> thousand <0505> footmen: and David <01732> houghed

<06131> all <03605> the chariot <07393> [horses], but reserved

<03498> of them [for] an hundred <03967> chariots <07393>.

5  And when the Syrians <0758> of Damascus <01834> came <0935> to

succour <05826> Hadadezer <01909> king <04428> of Zobah <06678>,

David <01732> slew <05221> of the Syrians <0758> two <08147> and

twenty <06242> thousand <0505> men <0376>.

 6  Then David <01732> put <07760> garrisons <05333> in Syria <0758>

of Damascus <01834>: and the Syrians <0758> became <01961> servants

<05650> to David <01732>, [and] brought <05375> gifts <04503>. And

the LORD <03068> preserved <03467> David <01732> whithersoever he

went <01980>.

7  And David <01732> took <03947> the shields <07982> of gold

<02091> that were on <0413> the servants <05650> of Hadadezer

<01909>, and brought <0935> them to Jerusalem <03389>.

8  And from Betah <0984>, and from Berothai <01268>, cities <05892>

of Hadadezer <01909>, king <04428> David <01732> took <03947>

exceeding <03966> much <07235> brass <05178>.

 9. When Toi <08583> king <04428> of Hamath <02574> heard <08085>

that David <01732> had <01961> smitten <05221> all <03605> the host

<02428> of Hadadezer <01909>,

 10  Then Toi <08583> sent <07971> Joram <03141> his son <01121>

unto king <04428> David <01732>, to salute him, and to bless <01288>

him, because he had fought <03898> against Hadadezer <01909>, and

smitten <05221> him: for Hadadezer <01909> had wars <04421> with Toi

<08583>. And [Joram] brought <01961> with him vessels <03627> of

silver <03701>, and vessels <03627> of gold <02091>, and vessels

<03627> of brass <05178>:

11  Which also king <04428> David <01732> did dedicate <06942> unto

the LORD <03068>, with the silver <03701> and gold <02091> that he

had dedicated <06942> of all <03605> nations <01471> which <0834> he

subdued <03533>;

12  Of Syria <0758>, and of Moab <04124>, and of the children

<01121> of Ammon <05983>, and of the Philistines <06430>, and of

Amalek <06002>, and of the spoil <07998> of Hadadezer <01909>, son

<01121> of Rehob <07340>, king <04428> of Zobah <06678>.

 13  And David <01732> gat <06213> [him] a name <08034> when he

returned <07725> from smiting <05221> of the Syrians <0758> in the

valley <01516> of salt <04417>, [being] eighteen thousand <0505>

[men].

14  And he put <07760> garrisons <05333> in Edom <0123>; throughout

all <03605> Edom <0123> put <07760> he garrisons <05333>, and all

<03605> they of Edom <0123> became <01961> David's <01732> servants

<05650>. And the LORD <03068> preserved <03467> David <01732>

whithersoever he went <01980>.

 15. And David <01732> reigned <04427> over <05921> all <03605>

Israel <03478>; and David <01732> executed <06213> judgment <04941>

and justice <06666> unto all <03605> his people <05971>.

16  And Joab <03097> the son <01121> of Zeruiah <06870> [was] over

<05921> the host <06635>; and Jehoshaphat <03092> the son <01121> of

Ahilud <0286> [was] recorder <02142>;

17  And Zadok <06659> the son <01121> of Ahitub <0285>, and

Ahimelech <0288> the son <01121> of Abiathar <054>, [were] the

priests <03548>; and Seraiah <08304> [was] the scribe <05608>;

18  And Benaiah <01141> the son <01121> of Jehoiada <03111> [was

over] both the Cherethites <03774> and the Pelethites <06432>; and

David's <01732> sons <01121> were chief <03548> rulers.

2Samuel   9

 1. And David <01732> said <0559>, Is there yet <05750> any that is

left <03498> of the house <01004> of Saul <07586>, that I may shew

<06213> him kindness <02617> for Jonathan's <03129> sake <05668>?

2  And [there was] of the house <01004> of Saul <07586> a servant

<05650> whose name <08034> [was] Ziba <06717>. And when they had

called <07121> him unto David <01732>, the king <04428> said <0559>

unto him, [Art] thou Ziba <06717>? And he said <0559>, Thy servant

<05650> [is he].

3  And the king <04428> said <0559>, [Is] there not yet <05750> any

<0376> of the house <01004> of Saul <07586>, that I may shew <06213>

the kindness <02617> of God <0430> unto him? And Ziba <06717> said

<0559> unto the king <04428>, Jonathan <03083> hath yet <05750> a

son <01121>, [which is] lame <05223> on [his] feet <07272>.

4  And the king <04428> said <0559> unto him, Where <0375> [is] he?

And Ziba <06717> said <0559> unto the king <04428>, Behold <02009>,

he [is] in the house <01004> of Machir <04353>, the son <01121> of

Ammiel <05988>, in Lodebar <03810>.

5  Then king <04428> David <01732> sent <07971>, and fetched

<03947> him out of the house <01004> of Machir <04353>, the son

<01121> of Ammiel <05988>, from Lodebar <03810>.

6  Now when Mephibosheth <04648>, the son <01121> of Jonathan

<03083>, the son <01121> of Saul <07586>, was come <0935> unto David

<01732>, he fell <05307> on <05921> his face <06440>, and did

reverence <07812>. And David <01732> said <0559>, Mephibosheth

<04648>. And he answered <0559>, Behold <02009> thy servant <05650>!

7  And David <01732> said <0559> unto him, Fear <03372> not: for I

will surely <03588> shew <06213> thee kindness <02617> for Jonathan

<03083> thy father's <01> sake <05668>, and will restore <07725>

thee all <03605> the land <07704> of Saul <07586> thy father <01>;

and thou shalt eat <0398> bread <03899> at <05921> my table <07979>

continually <08548>.

8  And he bowed <07812> himself, and said <0559>, What <04100> [is]

thy servant <05650>, that thou shouldest look <06437> upon such a

dead <04191> dog <03611> as I [am]?

 9. Then the king <04428> called <07121> to Ziba <06717>, Saul's

<07586> servant <05288>, and said <0559> unto him, I have given

<05414> unto thy master's <0113> son <01121> all <03605> that

pertained <01961> to Saul <07586> and to all <03605> his house

<01004>.

10  Thou therefore, and thy sons <01121>, and thy servants <05650>,

shall till <05647> the land <0127> for him, and thou shalt bring

<0935> in [the fruits], that thy master's <0113> son <01121> may

have <01961> food <03899> to eat <0398>: but Mephibosheth <04648>

thy master's <0113> son <01121> shall eat <0398> bread <03899> alway

<08548> at <05921> my table <07979>. Now Ziba <06717> had fifteen

<06240> sons <01121> and twenty <06242> servants <05650>.

11  Then said <0559> Ziba <06717> unto the king <04428>, According

to all <03605> that my lord <0113> the king <04428> hath commanded

<06680> his servant <05650>, so <03651> shall thy servant <05650> do

<06213>. As for Mephibosheth <04648>, [said the king <04428>], he

shall eat <0398> at <05921> my table <07979>, as one <0259> of the

king's <04428> sons <01121>.

 12  And Mephibosheth <04648> had a young <06996> son <01121>, whose

name <08034> [was] Micha <04316>. And all <03605> that dwelt <04186>

in the house <01004> of Ziba <06717> [were] servants <05650> unto

Mephibosheth <04648>.

13  So Mephibosheth <04648> dwelt <03427> in Jerusalem <03389>: for

he did eat <0398> continually <08548> at <05921> the king's <04428>

table <07979>; and was lame <06455> on both <08147> his feet

<07272>.

2Samuel  10

 1. And it came <01961> to pass after <0310> this <03651>, that the

king <04428> of the children <01121> of Ammon <05983> died <04191>,

and Hanun <02586> his son <01121> reigned <04427> in his stead

<08478>.

 2  Then said <0559> David <01732>, I will shew <06213> kindness

<02617> unto Hanun <02586> the son <01121> of Nahash <05176>, as his

father <01> shewed <06213> kindness <02617> unto me. And David

<01732> sent <07971> to comfort <05162> him by the hand <03027> of

his servants <05650> for his father <01>. And David's <01732>

servants <05650> came <0935> into the land <0776> of the children

<01121> of Ammon <05983>.

3  And the princes <08269> of the children <01121> of Ammon <05983>

said <0559> unto Hanun <02586> their lord <0113>, Thinkest <05869>

thou that David <01732> doth honour <03513> thy father <01>, that he

hath sent <07971> comforters <05162> unto thee? hath not David

<01732> [rather] sent <07971> his servants <05650> unto thee, to

search <02713> the city <05892>, and to spy <07270> it out, and to

overthrow <02015> it?

 4  Wherefore Hanun <02586> took <03947> David's <01732> servants

<05650>, and shaved <01548> off the one half <02677> of their beards

<02206>, and cut <03772> off their garments <04063> in the middle

<02677>, [even] to their buttocks <08357>, and sent <07971> them

away.

5  When they told <05046> [it] unto David <01732>, he sent <07971>

to meet <07125> them, because <03588> the men <0582> were greatly

<03966> ashamed <03637>: and the king <04428> said <0559>, Tarry

<03427> at Jericho <03405> until <05704> your beards <02206> be

grown <06779>, and [then] return <07725>.

 6. And when the children <01121> of Ammon <05983> saw <07200> that

they stank <0887> before David <01732>, the children <01121> of

Ammon <05983> sent <07971> and hired <07936> the Syrians <0758> of

Bethrehob <01050>, and the Syrians <0758> of Zoba <06678>, twenty

<06242> thousand <0505> footmen <07273>, and of king <04428> Maacah

<04601> a thousand <0505> men <0376>, and of Ishtob <0382> twelve

thousand <0505> men <0376>.

7  And when David <01732> heard <08085> of [it], he sent <07971>

Joab <03097>, and all <03605> the host <06635> of the mighty <01368>

men.

8  And the children <01121> of Ammon <05983> came <03318> out, and

put the battle <04421> in array <06186> at the entering <06607> in

of the gate <08179>: and the Syrians <0758> of Zoba <06678>, and of

Rehob <07340>, and Ishtob <0382>, and Maacah <04601>, [were] by

themselves <0905> in the field <07704>.

9  When Joab <03097> saw <07200> that the front <06440> of the

battle <04421> was against <0413> him before <06440> and behind

<0268>, he chose <0977> of all <03605> the choice <0977> [men] of

Israel <03478>, and put [them] in array <06186> against <07125> the

Syrians <0758>:

10  And the rest <03499> of the people <05971> he delivered <05414>

into the hand <03027> of Abishai <052> his brother <0251>, that he

might put [them] in array <06186> against <07125> the children

<01121> of Ammon <05983>.

11  And he said <0559>, If <0518> the Syrians <0758> be too strong

<02388> for me, then thou shalt help <03447> me: but if <0518> the

children <01121> of Ammon <05983> be too strong <02388> for thee,

then I will come <01980> and help <03467> thee.

12  Be of good courage <02388>, and let us play the men <02388> for

our people <05971>, and for the cities <05892> of our God <0430>:

and the LORD <03068> do <06213> that which seemeth <05869> him good

<02896>.

13  And Joab <03097> drew nigh <05066>, and the people <05971> that

[were] with him, unto the battle <04421> against the Syrians <0758>:

and they fled <05127> before <06440> him.

14  And when the children <01121> of Ammon <05983> saw <07200> that

the Syrians <0758> were fled <05127>, then fled <05127> they also

before <06440> Abishai <052>, and entered <0935> into the city

<05892>. So Joab <03097> returned <07725> from the children <01121>

of Ammon <05983>, and came <0935> to Jerusalem <03389>.

 15. And when the Syrians <0758> saw <07200> that they were smitten

<05062> before <06440> Israel <03478>, they gathered <0622>

themselves together <03162>.

16  And Hadarezer <01928> sent <07971>, and brought <03318> out the

Syrians <0758> that [were] beyond <05676> the river <05104>: and

they came <0935> to Helam <02431>; and Shobach <07731> the captain

<08269> of the host <06635> of Hadarezer <01928> [went] before

<06440> them.

17  And when it was told <05046> David <01732>, he gathered <0622>

all <03605> Israel <03478> together, and passed <05674> over <05674>

Jordan <03383>, and came <0935> to Helam <02431>. And the Syrians

<0758> set themselves in array <06186> against <07125> David

<01732>, and fought <03898> with him.

18  And the Syrians <0758> fled <05127> before <06440> Israel

<03478>; and David <01732> slew <02126> [the men of] seven <07651>

hundred <03967> chariots <07393> of the Syrians <0758>, and forty

<0705> thousand <0505> horsemen <06571>, and smote <05221> Shobach

<07731> the captain <08269> of their host <06635>, who died <04191>

there <08033>.

19  And when all <03605> the kings <04428> [that were] servants

<05650> to Hadarezer <01928> saw <07200> that they were smitten

<05062> before <06440> Israel <03478>, they made peace <07999> with

Israel <03478>, and served <05647> them. So the Syrians <0758>

feared <03372> to help <03467> the children <01121> of Ammon <05983>

any more <05750>.

2Samuel  11

 1. And it came <01961> to pass, after the year <08141> was expired

<08666>, at the time <06256> when kings <04428> go <03318> forth

<03318> [to battle], that David <01732> sent <07971> Joab <03097>,

and his servants <05650> with him, and all <03605> Israel <03478>;

and they destroyed <07843> the children <01121> of Ammon <05983>,

and besieged <06696> Rabbah <07237>. But David <01732> tarried

<03427> still at Jerusalem <03389>.

2  And it came <01961> to pass in an eveningtide, that David

<01732> arose <06965> from off <05921> his bed <04904>, and walked

<01980> upon the roof <01406> of the king's <04428> house <01004>:

and from the roof <01406> he saw <07200> a woman <0802> washing

<07364> herself; and the woman <0802> [was] very <03966> beautiful

<02896> to look <04758> upon.

3  And David <01732> sent <07971> and enquired <01875> after the

woman <0802>. And [one] said <0559>, [Is] not this <02063> Bathsheba

<01339>, the daughter <01323> of Eliam <0463>, the wife <0802> of

Uriah <0223> the Hittite <02850>?

4  And David <01732> sent <07971> messengers <04397>, and took

<03947> her; and she came <0935> in unto him, and he lay <07901>

with her; for she was purified <06942> from her uncleanness <02932>:

and she returned <07725> unto her house <01004>.

5  And the woman <0802> conceived <02030>, and sent <07971> and

told <05046> David <01732>, and said <0559>, I [am] with child

<02030>.

 6. And David <01732> sent <07971> to Joab <03097>, [saying <0559>],

Send <07971> me Uriah <0223> the Hittite <02850>. And Joab <03097>

sent <07971> Uriah <0223> to David <01732>.

7  And when Uriah <0223> was come <0935> unto him, David <01732>

demanded <07592> [of him] how Joab <03097> did <07965>, and how the

people <05971> did <07965>, and how the war <04421> prospered

<07965>.

 8  And David <01732> said <0559> to Uriah <0223>, Go <03381> down

<03381> to thy house <01004>, and wash <07364> thy feet <07272>. And

Uriah <0223> departed <03318> out of the king's <04428> house

<01004>, and there followed him a mess <04864> [of meat] from the

king <04428>.

9  But Uriah <0223> slept <07901> at the door <06607> of the king's

<04428> house <01004> with all <03605> the servants <05650> of his

lord <0113>, and went <03381> not down <03381> to his house <01004>.

10  And when they had told <05046> David <01732>, saying <0559>,

Uriah <0223> went <03381> not down <03381> unto his house <01004>,

David <01732> said <0559> unto Uriah <0223>, Camest <0935> thou not

from [thy] journey <01870>? why <04069> [then] didst thou not go

<03381> down <03381> unto thine house <01004>?

11  And Uriah <0223> said <0559> unto David <01732>, The ark

<0727>, and Israel <03478>, and Judah <03063>, abide <03427> in

tents <05521>; and my lord <0113> Joab <03097>, and the servants

<05650> of my lord <0113>, are encamped <02583> in the open <06440>

fields <07704>; shall I then go <0935> into <0413> mine house

<01004>, to eat <0398> and to drink <08354>, and to lie <07901> with

my wife <0802>? [as] thou livest <02416>, and [as] thy soul <05315>

liveth <02416>, I will not do <06213> this <02088> thing <01697>.

 12  And David <01732> said <0559> to Uriah <0223>, Tarry <03427>

here <02088> to day <03117> also <01571>, and to morrow <04279> I

will let thee depart <07971>. So Uriah <0223> abode <03427> in

Jerusalem <03389> that day <03117>, and the morrow <04283>.

13  And when <03588> David <01732> had called <07121> him, he did

eat <0398> and drink <08354> before <06440> him; and he made him

drunk <07937>: and at even <06153> he went <03318> out to lie

<07901> on his bed <04904> with the servants <05650> of his lord

<0113>, but went <03381> not down <03381> to his house <01004>.

 14. And it came <01961> to pass in the morning <01242>, that David

<01732> wrote <03789> a letter <05612> to Joab <03097>, and sent

<07971> [it] by the hand <03027> of Uriah <0223>.

15  And he wrote <03789> in the letter <05612>, saying <0559>, Set

<03051> ye Uriah <0223> in the forefront of the hottest <02389>

battle <04421>, and retire <07725> ye from him, that he may be

smitten <05221>, and die <04191>.

16  And it came <01961> to pass, when Joab <03097> observed <08104>

the city <05892>, that he assigned <05414> Uriah <0223> unto a place

<04725> where <0834> he knew <03045> that valiant <02428> men <0582>

[were].

17  And the men <0582> of the city <05892> went <03318> out, and

fought <03898> with Joab <03097>: and there fell <05307> [some] of

the people <05971> of the servants <05650> of David <01732>; and

Uriah <0223> the Hittite <02850> died <04191> also <01571>.

 18  Then Joab <03097> sent <07971> and told <05046> David <01732>

all <03605> the things <01697> concerning the war <04421>;

19  And charged <06680> the messenger <04397>, saying <0559>, When

thou hast made an end <03615> of telling <01696> the matters <01697>

of the war <04421> unto the king <04428>,

20  And if <0518> so be that the king's <04428> wrath <02534> arise

<05927>, and he say <0559> unto thee, Wherefore <04069> approached

<05066> ye so nigh unto the city <05892> when ye did fight <03898>?

knew <03045> ye not that they would shoot <03384> from the wall

<02346>?

 21  Who <04310> smote <05221> Abimelech <040> the son <01121> of

Jerubbesheth <03380>? did not a woman <0802> cast <07993> a piece

<06400> of a millstone <07393> upon him from the wall <02346>, that

he died <04191> in Thebez <08405>? why <04100> went <05066> ye nigh

<05066> the wall <02346>? then say <0559> thou, Thy servant <05650>

Uriah <0223> the Hittite <02850> is dead <04191> also <01571>.

22  So the messenger <04397> went <03212>, and came <0935> and

shewed <05046> David <01732> all <03605> that Joab <03097> had sent

<07971> him for.

23  And the messenger <04397> said <0559> unto David <01732>,

Surely <03588> the men <0582> prevailed <01396> against <05921> us,

and came <03318> out unto us into the field <07704>, and we were

upon them even unto the entering <06607> of the gate <08179>.

24  And the shooters <03384> shot <03384> from off <05921> the wall

<02346> upon thy servants <05650>; and [some] of the king's <04428>

servants <05650> be dead <04191>, and thy servant <05650> Uriah

<0223> the Hittite <02850> is dead <04191> also <01571>.

25  Then David <01732> said <0559> unto the messenger <04397>, Thus

<03541> shalt thou say <0559> unto Joab <03097>, Let not this

<02088> thing <01697> displease thee, for the sword <02719>

devoureth <0398> one <02088> as well <02090> as another <02090>:

make thy battle <04421> more strong <02388> against <0413> the city

<05892>, and overthrow <02040> it: and encourage <02388> thou him.

26  And when the wife <0802> of Uriah <0223> heard <08085> that

Uriah <0223> her husband <0376> was dead <04191>, she mourned

<05594> for her husband <01167>.

27  And when the mourning <060> was past <05493>, David <01732>

sent <07971> and fetched <0622> her to his house <01004>, and she

became <01961> his wife <0802>, and bare <03205> him a son <01121>.

But the thing <01697> that David <01732> had done <06213> displeased

the LORD <03068>.

2Samuel  12

 1. And the LORD <03068> sent <07971> Nathan <05416> unto David

<01732>. And he came <0935> unto him, and said <0559> unto him,

There were two <08147> men <0582> in one <0259> city <05892>; the

one <0259> rich <06223>, and the other <0259> poor <07326>.

2  The rich <06223> [man] had <01961> exceeding <03966> many

<07235> flocks <06629> and herds <01241>:

3  But the poor <07326> [man] had nothing, save one <0259> little

<06996> ewe <03535> lamb <03535>, which <0834> he had <01961> bought

<07069> and nourished <02421> up: and it grew <01431> up together

<03162> with him, and with his children <01121>; it did eat <0398>

of his own meat <06595>, and drank <08354> of his own cup <03563>,

and lay <07901> in his bosom <02436>, and was unto him as a daughter

<01323>.

 4  And there came <0935> a traveller <01982> unto the rich <06223>

man <0376>, and he spared <02550> to take <03947> of his own flock

<06629> and of his own herd <01241>, to dress <06213> for the

wayfaring <0732> man that was come <0935> unto him; but took <03947>

the poor <07326> man's <0376> lamb <03535>, and dressed <06213> it

for the man <0376> that was come <0935> to him.

 5  And David's <01732> anger <0639> was greatly <03966> kindled

<02734> against the man <0376>; and he said <0559> to Nathan

<05416>, [As] the LORD <03068> liveth <02416>, the man <0376> that

hath done <06213> this <02063> [thing] shall surely die <04194>:

6  And he shall restore <07999> the lamb <03535> fourfold <0706>,

because he did <06213> this <02088> thing <01697>, and because he

had no <03808> pity <02550>.

7  And Nathan <05416> said <0559> to David <01732>, Thou [art] the

man <0376>. Thus <03541> saith <0559> the LORD <03068> God <0430> of

Israel <03478>, I anointed <04886> thee king <04428> over <05921>

Israel <03478>, and I delivered <05337> thee out of the hand <03027>

of Saul <07586>;

 8  And I gave <05414> thee thy master's <0113> house <01004>, and

thy master's <0113> wives <0802> into thy bosom <02436>, and gave

<05414> thee the house <01004> of Israel <03478> and of Judah

<03063>; and if <0518> [that had been] too little <04592>, I would

moreover <03254> have given <03254> unto thee such <02007> and such

<02007> things.

9  Wherefore <04069> hast thou despised <0959> the commandment

<01697> of the LORD <03068>, to do <06213> evil <07451> in his sight

<05869>? thou hast killed <05221> Uriah <0223> the Hittite <02850>

with the sword <02719>, and hast taken <03947> his wife <0802> [to

be] thy wife <0802>, and hast slain <02026> him with the sword

<02719> of the children <01121> of Ammon <05983>.

10  Now <06258> therefore the sword <02719> shall never depart

<05493> from thine house <01004>; because thou hast despised <0959>

me, and hast taken <03947> the wife <0802> of Uriah <0223> the

Hittite <02850> to be thy wife <0802>.

 11  Thus <03541> saith <0559> the LORD <03068>, Behold <02005>, I

will raise <06965> up evil <07451> against <05921> thee out of thine

own house <01004>, and I will take <03947> thy wives <0802> before

thine eyes <05869>, and give <05414> [them] unto thy neighbour

<07453>, and he shall lie <07901> with thy wives <0802> in the sight

<05869> of this <02063> sun <08121>.

12  For thou didst <06213> [it] secretly <05643>: but I will do

<06213> this <02088> thing <01697> before <05048> all <03605> Israel

<03478>, and before <05048> the sun <08121>.

 13  And David <01732> said <0559> unto Nathan <05416>, I have

sinned <02398> against the LORD <03068>. And Nathan <05416> said

<0559> unto David <01732>, The LORD <03068> also <01571> hath put

<05674> away <05674> thy sin <02403>; thou shalt not die <04191>.

 14  Howbeit <0657>, because <03588> by this <02088> deed <01697>

thou hast given great <05006> occasion to the enemies <0341> of the

LORD <03068> to blaspheme <05006>, the child <01121> also <01571>

[that is] born <03209> unto thee shall surely die <04191>.

 15. And Nathan <05416> departed <03212> unto his house <01004>. And

the LORD <03068> struck <05062> the child <03206> that Uriah's

<0223> wife <0802> bare <03205> unto David <01732>, and it was very

sick <0605>.

16  David <01732> therefore besought <01245> God <0430> for the

child <05288>; and David <01732> fasted <06684>, and went <0935> in,

and lay <07901> all <03605> night upon the earth <0776>.

17  And the elders <02205> of his house <01004> arose <06965>, [and

went] to him, to raise <06965> him up from the earth <0776>: but he

would <014> not, neither <03808> did he eat <01262> bread <03899>

with them.

18  And it came <01961> to pass on the seventh <07637> day <03117>,

that the child <03206> died <04191>. And the servants <05650> of

David <01732> feared <03372> to tell <05046> him that the child

<03206> was dead <04191>: for they said <0559>, Behold <02009>,

while the child <03206> was yet alive <02416>, we spake <01696> unto

him, and he would not hearken <08085> unto our voice <06963>: how

<0349> will he then vex himself, if we tell <0559> him that the

child <03206> is dead <04191>?

19  But when David <01732> saw <07200> that his servants <05650>

whispered <03907>, David <01732> perceived <0995> that the child

<03206> was dead <04191>: therefore David <01732> said <0559> unto

his servants <05650>, Is the child <03206> dead <04191>? And they

said <0559>, He is dead <04191>.

20  Then David <01732> arose <06965> from the earth <0776>, and

washed <07364>, and anointed <05480> [himself], and changed <02498>

his apparel <08071>, and came <0935> into the house <01004> of the

LORD <03068>, and worshipped <07812>: then he came <0935> to his own

house <01004>; and when he required <07592>, they set <07760> bread

<03899> before him, and he did eat <0398>.

21  Then said <0559> his servants <05650> unto him, What <04100>

thing <01697> [is] this <02088> that thou hast done <06213>? thou

didst fast <06684> and weep <01058> for the child <03206>, [while it

was] alive <02416>; but when <0834> the child <03206> was dead

<04191>, thou didst rise <06965> and eat <0398> bread <03899>.

22  And he said <0559>, While the child <03206> was yet <05750>

alive <02416>, I fasted <06684> and wept <01058>: for I said <0559>,

Who <04310> can tell <03045> [whether] GOD <03068> will be gracious

<02603> to me, that the child <03206> may live <02416>?

 23  But now <06258> he is dead <04191>, wherefore <04100> should I

fast <06684>? can <03201> I bring <07725> him back <07725> again

<05750>? I shall go <01980> to him, but he shall not return <07725>

to me.

24  And David <01732> comforted <05162> Bathsheba <01339> his wife

<0802>, and went <0935> in unto her, and lay <07901> with her: and

she bare <03205> a son <01121>, and he called <07121> his name

<08034> Solomon <08010>: and the LORD <03068> loved <0157> him.

25  And he sent <07971> by the hand <03027> of Nathan <05416> the

prophet <05030>; and he called <07121> his name <08034> Jedidiah

<03041>, because <05668> of the LORD <03068>.

 26. And Joab <03097> fought <03898> against Rabbah <07237> of the

children <01121> of Ammon <05983>, and took <03920> the royal

<04410> city <05892>.

27  And Joab <03097> sent <07971> messengers <04397> to David

<01732>, and said <0559>, I have fought <03898> against Rabbah

<07237>, and have taken <03920> the city <05892> of waters <04325>.

28 Now <06258> therefore gather <0622> the rest <03499> of the

people <05971> together, and encamp <02583> against <05921> the city

<05892>, and take <03920> it: lest <06435> I take <03920> the city

<05892>, and it be called <07121> after <05921> my name <08034>.

29  And David <01732> gathered <0622> all <03605> the people

<05971> together, and went <03212> to Rabbah <07237>, and fought

<03898> against it, and took <03920> it.

 30  And he took <03947> their king's <04428> crown <05850> from off

<05921> his head <07218>, the weight <04948> whereof [was] a talent

<03603> of gold <02091> with the precious <03368> stones <068>: and

it was [set] on <05921> David's <01732> head <07218>. And he brought

<03318> forth <03318> the spoil <07998> of the city <05892> in great

<03966> abundance <07235>.

31  And he brought <03318> forth <03318> the people <05971> that

[were] therein, and put <07760> [them] under saws <04050>, and under

harrows <02757> of iron <01270>, and under axes <04037> of iron

<01270>, and made them pass <05674> through the brickkiln <04404>:

and thus <03651> did <06213> he unto all <03605> the cities <05892>

of the children <01121> of Ammon <05983>. So David <01732> and all

<03605> the people <05971> returned <07725> unto Jerusalem <03389>.

2Samuel  13

 1. And it came <01961> to pass after <0310> this <03651>, that

Absalom <053> the son <01121> of David <01732> had a fair <03303>

sister <0269>, whose name <08034> [was] Tamar <08559>; and Amnon

<0550> the son <01121> of David <01732> loved <0157> her.

2  And Amnon <0550> was so vexed <03334>, that he fell sick <02470>

for his sister <0269> Tamar <08559>; for she [was] a virgin <01330>;

and Amnon <0550> thought <05869> it hard <06381> for him to do

<06213> any <03972> thing to her.

 3  But Amnon <0550> had a friend <07453>, whose name <08034> [was]

Jonadab <03122>, the son <01121> of Shimeah <08093> David's <01732>

brother <0251>: and Jonadab <03122> [was] a very <03966> subtil

<02450> man <0376>.

4  And he said <0559> unto him, Why <04069> [art] thou, [being] the

king's <04428> son <01121>, lean <01800> from day <01242> to day

<01242>? wilt thou not tell <05046> me? And Amnon <0550> said <0559>

unto him, I love <0157> Tamar <08559>, my brother <0251> Absalom's

<053> sister <0269>.

5  And Jonadab <03122> said <0559> unto him, Lay <07901> thee down

<07901> on <05921> thy bed <04904>, and make thyself sick <02470>:

and when thy father <01> cometh <0935> to see <07200> thee, say

<0559> unto him, I pray <04994> thee, let my sister <0269> Tamar

<08559> come <0935>, and give <01262> me meat <03899>, and dress

<06213> the meat <01279> in my sight <05869>, that I may see <07200>

[it], and eat <0398> [it] at her hand <03027>.

6  So Amnon <0550> lay <07901> down <07901>, and made himself sick

<02470>: and when the king <04428> was come <0935> to see <07200>

him, Amnon <0550> said <0559> unto the king <04428>, I pray <04994>

thee, let Tamar <08559> my sister <0269> come <0935>, and make

<03823> me a couple <08147> of cakes <03834> in my sight <05869>,

that I may eat <01262> at her hand <03027>.

 7  Then David <01732> sent <07971> home <01004> to Tamar <08559>,

saying <0559>, Go <03212> now <04994> to thy brother <0251> Amnon's

<0550> house <01004>, and dress <06213> him meat <01279>.

 8  So Tamar <08559> went <03212> to her brother <0251> Amnon's

<0550> house <01004>; and he was laid <07901> down <07901>. And she

took <03947> flour <01217>, and kneaded <03888> [it], and made

<03835> cakes <03823> in his sight <05869>, and did bake <01310> the

cakes <03834>.

 9  And she took <03947> a pan <04958>, and poured <03332> [them]

out before <06440> him; but he refused <03985> to eat <0398>. And

Amnon <0550> said <0559>, Have <03318> out all <03605> men <0376>

from me. And they went <03318> out every man <0376> from him.

 10  And Amnon <0550> said <0559> unto Tamar <08559>, Bring <0935>

the meat <01279> into the chamber <02315>, that I may eat <01262> of

thine hand <03027>. And Tamar <08559> took <03947> the cakes <03834>

which <0834> she had made <06213>, and brought <0935> [them] into

the chamber <02315> to Amnon <0550> her brother <0251>.

11  And when she had brought <05066> [them] unto him to eat <0398>,

he took hold <02388> of her, and said <0559> unto her, Come <0935>

lie <07901> with me, my sister <0269>.

12  And she answered <0559> him, Nay <0408>, my brother <0251>, do

<06213> not force <06031> me; for no <03808> such <03651> thing

<03651> ought to be done <06213> in Israel <03478>: do <06213> not

thou this <02063> folly <05039>.

13  And I, whither <0575> shall I cause my shame <02781> to go

<03212>? and as for thee, thou shalt be as one <0259> of the fools

<05036> in Israel <03478>. Now <06258> therefore, I pray <04994>

thee, speak <01696> unto the king <04428>; for he will not withhold

<04513> me from thee.

14  Howbeit he would <014> not hearken <08085> unto her voice

<06963>: but, being stronger <02388> than she, forced <06031> her,

and lay <07901> with her.

15  Then Amnon <0550> hated <08130> her exceedingly; so that the

hatred <08135> wherewith <0834> he hated <08130> her [was] greater

<01419> than the love <0160> wherewith <0834> he had loved <0157>

her. And Amnon <0550> said <0559> unto her, Arise <06965>, be gone

<03212>.

16  And she said <0559> unto him, [There is] no <0408> cause: this

<02063> evil <07451> in sending <07971> me away [is] greater <01419>

than the other <0312> that thou didst <06213> unto me. But he would

<014> not hearken <08085> unto her.

17  Then he called <07121> his servant <05288> that ministered

<08334> unto him, and said <0559>, Put <07971> now <04994> this

<02063> [woman] out from me, and bolt <05274> the door <01817> after

<0310> her.

18  And [she had] a garment <03801> of divers <06446> colours

<06446> upon her: for with such <03651> robes <04598> were the

king's <04428> daughters <01121> [that were] virgins <01330>

apparelled <03847>. Then his servant <08334> brought <03318> her

out, and bolted <05274> the door <01817> after <0310> her.

 19  And Tamar <08559> put <03947> ashes <0665> on <05921> her head

<07218>, and rent <07167> her garment <03801> of divers <06446>

colours <06446> that [was] on <05921> her, and laid <07760> her hand

<03027> on <05921> her head <07218>, and went <03212> on crying

<02201>.

20  And Absalom <053> her brother <0251> said <0559> unto her, Hath

Amnon <0550> thy brother <0251> been <01961> with thee? but hold

<02790> now <06258> thy peace <02790>, my sister <0269>: he [is] thy

brother <0251>; regard <03820> not this <02063> thing <01697>. So

Tamar <08559> remained <03427> desolate <08076> in her brother

<0251> Absalom's <053> house <01004>.

 21. But when king <04428> David <01732> heard <08085> of all

<03605> these <0428> things <01697>, he was very <03966> wroth

<02734>.

22  And Absalom <053> spake <01696> unto his brother Amnon <0550>

neither <03808> good <02896> nor bad <07451>: for Absalom <053>

hated <08130> Amnon <0550>, because he had forced <06031> his sister

<0269> Tamar <08559>.

23  And it came <01961> to pass after two full <03117> years

<08141>, that Absalom <053> had sheepshearers <01494> in Baalhazor

<01178>, which <0834> [is] beside <05973> Ephraim <0669>: and

Absalom <053> invited <07121> all <03605> the king's <04428> sons

<01121>.

24  And Absalom <053> came <0935> to the king <04428>, and said

<0559>, Behold <02009> now <04994>, thy servant <05650> hath

sheepshearers <01494>; let <03381> the king <04428>, I beseech

<04994> thee, and his servants <05650> go <03212> with thy servant

<05650>.

 25  And the king <04428> said <0559> to Absalom <053>, Nay <0408>,

my son <01121>, let us not all <03605> now <04994> go <03212>, lest

<03808> we be chargeable <03513> unto thee. And he pressed <06555>

him: howbeit he would <014> not go <03212>, but blessed <01288> him.

 26  Then said <0559> Absalom <053>, If <03808> not, I pray <04994>

thee, let my brother <0251> Amnon <0550> go <03212> with us. And the

king <04428> said <0559> unto him, Why <04100> should he go <03212>

with thee?

27  But Absalom <053> pressed <06555> him, that he let Amnon <0550>

and all <03605> the king's <04428> sons <01121> go <07971> with him.

28  Now Absalom <053> had commanded <06680> his servants <05288>,

saying <0559>, Mark <07200> ye now <04994> when Amnon's <0550> heart

<03820> is merry <02896> with wine <03196>, and when I say <0559>

unto you, Smite <05221> Amnon <0550>; then kill <04191> him, fear

<03372> not: have not I commanded <06680> you? be courageous

<02388>, and be valiant.

29  And the servants <05288> of Absalom <053> did <06213> unto

Amnon <0550> as Absalom <053> had commanded <06680>. Then all

<03605> the king's <04428> sons <01121> arose <06965>, and every man

<0376> gat <07392> him up upon his mule <06505>, and fled <05127>.

 30. And it came <01961> to pass, while they were in the way

<01870>, that tidings <08052> came <0935> to David <01732>, saying

<0559>, Absalom <053> hath slain <05221> all <03605> the king's

<04428> sons <01121>, and there is not one <0259> of them left

<03498>.

31  Then the king <04428> arose <06965>, and tare <07167> his

garments <0899>, and lay <07901> on the earth <0776>; and all

<03605> his servants <05650> stood <05324> by with their clothes

<0899> rent <07167>.

 32  And Jonadab <03122>, the son <01121> of Shimeah <08093> David's

<01732> brother <0251>, answered <06030> and said <0559>, Let not my

lord <0113> suppose <0559> [that] they have slain <04191> all

<03605> the young <05288> men the king's <04428> sons <01121>; for

Amnon <0550> only <0905> is dead <04191>: for by the appointment

<06310> of Absalom <053> this hath been <01961> determined <07760>

from the day <03117> that he forced <06031> his sister <0269> Tamar

<08559>.

33  Now <06258> therefore let not my lord <0113> the king <04428>

take <07760> the thing <01697> to his heart <03820>, to think <0559>

that all <03605> the king's <04428> sons <01121> are dead <04191>:

for Amnon <0550> only <0905> is dead <04191>.

34  But Absalom <053> fled <01272>. And the young <05288> man that

kept the watch <06822> lifted <05375> up his eyes <05869>, and

looked <07200>, and, behold <02009>, there came <01980> much <07227>

people <05971> by the way <01870> of the hill <02022> side <06654>

behind <0310> him.

35  And Jonadab <03122> said <0559> unto the king <04428>, Behold

<02009>, the king's <04428> sons <01121> come <0935>: as thy servant

<05650> said <01697>, so <03651> it is.

36  And it came <01961> to pass, as soon as he had made an end

<03615> of speaking <01696>, that, behold <02009>, the king's

<04428> sons <01121> came <0935>, and lifted <05375> up their voice

<06963> and wept <01058>: and the king <04428> also <01571> and all

<03605> his servants <05650> wept <01058> very <03966> sore <01419>.

37  But Absalom <053> fled <01272>, and went <03212> to Talmai

<08526>, the son <01121> of Ammihud <05989>, king <04428> of Geshur

<01650>. And [David] mourned <056> for his son <01121> every <03605>

day <03117>.

38  So Absalom <053> fled <01272>, and went <03212> to Geshur

<01650>, and was there <08033> three <07969> years <08141>.

39  And [the soul of] king <04428> David <01732> longed <03615> to

go <03318> forth <03318> unto Absalom <053>: for he was comforted

<05162> concerning <05921> Amnon <0550>, seeing he was dead <04191>.

2Samuel  14

 1. Now Joab <03097> the son <01121> of Zeruiah <06870> perceived

<03045> that the king's <04428> heart <03820> [was] toward <05921>

Absalom <053>.

2  And Joab <03097> sent <07971> to Tekoah <08620>, and fetched

<03947> thence <08033> a wise <02450> woman <0802>, and said <0559>

unto her, I pray <04994> thee, feign thyself to be a mourner <056>,

and put <03847> on now <04994> mourning <060> apparel <0899>, and

anoint <05480> not thyself with oil <08081>, but be as a woman

<0802> that had a long <07227> time <03117> mourned <056> for the

dead <04191>:

3  And come <0935> to the king <04428>, and speak <01696> on this

<02088> manner <01697> unto him. So Joab <03097> put <07760> the

words <01697> in her mouth <06310>.

4  And when the woman <0802> of Tekoah <08621> spake <0559> to the

king <04428>, she fell <05307> on <05921> her face <0639> to the

ground <0776>, and did obeisance <07812>, and said <0559>, Help

<03467>, O king <04428>.

5  And the king <04428> said <0559> unto her, What <04100> aileth

thee? And she answered <0559>, I [am] indeed <061> a widow <0490>

woman <0802>, and mine husband <0376> is dead <04191>.

6  And thy handmaid <08198> had two <08147> sons <01121>, and they

two <08147> strove <05327> together in the field <07704>, and [there

was] none <0369> to part <05337> them, but the one <0259> smote

<05221> the other <0259>, and slew <04191> him.

7  And, behold <02009>, the whole <03605> family <04940> is risen

<06965> against <05921> thine handmaid <08198>, and they said

<0559>, Deliver <05414> him that smote <05221> his brother <0251>,

that we may kill <04191> him, for the life <05315> of his brother

<0251> whom <0834> he slew <02026>; and we will destroy <08045> the

heir <03423> also <01571>: and so they shall quench <03518> my coal

<01513> which <0834> is left <07604>, and shall not leave <07604> to

my husband <0376> [neither <01115>] name <08034> nor remainder

<07611> upon the earth <0127>.

8  And the king <04428> said <0559> unto the woman <0802>, Go

<03212> to thine house <01004>, and I will give charge <06680>

concerning <05921> thee.

9  And the woman <0802> of Tekoah <08621> said <0559> unto the king

<04428>, My lord <0113>, O king <04428>, the iniquity <05771> [be]

on <05921> me, and on <05921> my father's <01> house <01004>: and

the king <04428> and his throne <03678> [be] guiltless <05355>.

10  And the king <04428> said <0559>, Whosoever saith <01696>

[ought] unto thee, bring <0935> him to me, and he shall not touch

<05060> thee any more.

11  Then said <0559> she, I pray <04994> thee, let the king <04428>

remember <02142> the LORD <03068> thy God <0430>, that thou wouldest

not suffer the revengers <01350> of blood <01818> to destroy <07843>

any more <07235>, lest they destroy <08045> my son <01121>. And he

said <0559>, [As] the LORD <03068> liveth <02416>, there shall not

one hair <08185> of thy son <01121> fall <05307> to the earth

<0776>.

12  Then the woman <0802> said <0559>, Let thine handmaid <08198>,

I pray <04994> thee, speak <01696> [one] word <01697> unto my lord

<0113> the king <04428>. And he said <0559>, Say <01696> on.

13  And the woman <0802> said <0559>, Wherefore <04100> then hast

thou thought <02803> such <02063> a thing against <05921> the people

<05971> of God <0430>? for the king <04428> doth speak <01696> this

<02088> thing <01697> as one which is faulty <0818>, in that the

king <04428> doth not fetch <07725> home <07725> again <07725> his

banished <05080>.

14  For we must needs die <04191>, and [are] as water <04325> spilt

<05064> on the ground <0776>, which <0834> cannot <03808> be

gathered <0622> up again; neither <03808> doth God <0430> respect

<05375> [any] person <05315>: yet doth he devise <02803> means

<04284>, that his banished <05080> be not expelled <05080> from him.

15  Now <06258> therefore that I am come <0935> to speak <01696> of

this <02088> thing <01697> unto my lord <0113> the king <04428>, [it

is] because <03588> the people <05971> have made me afraid <03372>:

and thy handmaid <08198> said <0559>, I will now <04994> speak

<01696> unto the king <04428>; it may be that the king <04428> will

perform <06213> the request <01697> of his handmaid <0519>.

16  For the king <04428> will hear <08085>, to deliver <05337> his

handmaid <0519> out of the hand <03709> of the man <0376> [that

would] destroy <08045> me and my son <01121> together <03162> out of

the inheritance <05159> of God <0430>.

17  Then thine handmaid <08198> said <0559>, The word <01697> of my

lord <0113> the king <04428> shall now <04994> be comfortable

<04496>: for as an angel <04397> of God <0430>, so <03651> [is] my

lord <0113> the king <04428> to discern <08085> good <02896> and bad

<07451>: therefore the LORD <03068> thy God <0430> will be with

thee.

18  Then the king <04428> answered <06030> and said <0559> unto the

woman <0802>, Hide <03582> not from me, I pray <04994> thee, the

thing <01697> that I shall ask <07592> thee. And the woman <0802>

said <0559>, Let my lord <0113> the king <04428> now <04994> speak

<01696>.

19  And the king <04428> said <0559>, [Is not] the hand <03027> of

Joab <03097> with thee in all <03605> this <02063>? And the woman

<0802> answered <06030> and said <0559>, [As] thy soul <05315>

liveth <02416>, my lord <0113> the king <04428>, none <0376> can

turn to the right <03231> hand or to the left <08041> from ought

that my lord <0113> the king <04428> hath spoken <01696>: for thy

servant <05650> Joab <03097>, he bade <06680> me, and he put <07760>

all <03605> these <0428> words <01697> in the mouth <06310> of thine

handmaid <08198>:

20  To fetch <05437> about <05437> this form <06440> of speech

<01697> hath thy servant <05650> Joab <03097> done <06213> this

<02088> thing <01697>: and my lord <0113> [is] wise <02450>,

according to the wisdom <02451> of an angel <04397> of God <0430>,

to know <03045> all <03605> [things] that [are] in the earth <0776>.

 21. And the king <04428> said <0559> unto Joab <03097>, Behold

<02009> now <04994>, I have done <06213> this <02088> thing <01697>:

go <03212> therefore, bring <07725> the young <05288> man Absalom

<053> again <07725>.

 22  And Joab <03097> fell <05307> to the ground <0776> on <0413>

his face <06440>, and bowed <07812> himself, and thanked <01288> the

king <04428>: and Joab <03097> said <0559>, To day thy servant

<05650> knoweth <03045> that I have found <04672> grace <02580> in

thy sight <05869>, my lord <0113>, O king <04428>, in that the king

<04428> hath fulfilled <06213> the request <01697> of his servant

<05650>.

23  So Joab <03097> arose <06965> and went <03212> to Geshur

<01650>, and brought <0935> Absalom <053> to Jerusalem <03389>.

24  And the king <04428> said <0559>, Let him turn <05437> to his

own house <01004>, and let him not see <07200> my face <06440>. So

<03651> Absalom <053> returned <05437> to his own house <01004>, and

saw <07200> not the king's <04428> face <06440>.

25  But in all <03605> Israel <03478> there was none to be so much

<03966> praised <01984> as Absalom <053> for his beauty <03308>:

from the sole <03709> of his foot <07272> even to the crown <06936>

of his head <06936> there was no <03808> blemish <03971> in him.

26  And when he polled <01548> his head <07218>, (for it was at

every year's <03117> end <07093> that he polled <01548> [it]:

because <03588> [the hair] was heavy <03513> on <05921> him,

therefore he polled <01548> it:) he weighed <08254> the hair <08181>

of his head <07218> at two <08147> hundred <03967> shekels <08255>

after the king's <04428> weight <068>.

27  And unto Absalom <053> there were born <03205> three <07969>

sons <01121>, and one <0259> daughter <01323>, whose name <08034>

[was] Tamar <08559>: she was a woman <0802> of a fair <03303>

countenance <04758>.

 28. So Absalom <053> dwelt <03427> two full <03117> years <08141>

in Jerusalem <03389>, and saw <07200> not the king's <04428> face

<06440>.

29  Therefore Absalom <053> sent <07971> for Joab <03097>, to have

sent him to the king <04428>; but he would <014> not come <0935> to

him: and when he sent <07971> again <05750> the second <08145> time,

he would <014> not come <0935>.

30  Therefore he said <0559> unto his servants <05650>, See

<07200>, Joab's <03097> field <02513> is near <0413> mine <03027>,

and he hath barley <08184> there <08033>; go <03212> and set it on

fire <0784>. And Absalom's <053> servants <05650> set the field

<02513> on fire <0784>.

31  Then Joab <03097> arose <06965>, and came <0935> to Absalom

<053> unto [his] house <01004>, and said <0559> unto him, Wherefore

<04100> have thy servants <05650> set my field <02513> on fire

<0784>?

 32  And Absalom <053> answered <0559> Joab <03097>, Behold <02009>,

I sent <07971> unto thee, saying <0559>, Come <0935> hither, that I

may send <07971> thee to the king <04428>, to say <0559>, Wherefore

<04100> am I come <0935> from Geshur <01650>? [it had been] good

<02896> for me [to have been] there <08033> still: now <06258>

therefore let me see <07200> the king's <04428> face <06440>; and if

<0518> there be [any] iniquity <05771> in me, let him kill <04191>

me.

33  So Joab <03097> came <0935> to the king <04428>, and told

<05046> him: and when he had called <07121> for Absalom <053>, he

came <0935> to the king <04428>, and bowed <07812> himself on

<05921> his face <0639> to the ground <0776> before <06440> the king

<04428>: and the king <04428> kissed <05401> Absalom <053>.

2Samuel  15

 1. And it came <01961> to pass after <0310> this <03651>, that

Absalom <053> prepared <06213> him chariots <04818> and horses

<05483>, and fifty <02572> men <0376> to run <07323> before <06440>

him.

2  And Absalom <053> rose <07925> up early <07925>, and stood

beside the way <01870> of the gate <08179>: and it was [so], that

when any <03605> man <0376> that had <01961> a controversy <07379>

came <0935> to the king <04428> for judgment <04941>, then Absalom

<053> called <07121> unto him, and said <0559>, Of what <04310> city

<05892> [art] thou? And he said <0559>, Thy servant <05650> [is] of

one <0259> of the tribes <07626> of Israel <03478>.

3  And Absalom <053> said <0559> unto him, See <07200>, thy matters

<01697> [are] good <02896> and right <05228>; but [there is] no

<0369> man [deputed] of the king <04428> to hear <08085> thee.

 4  Absalom <053> said <0559> moreover, Oh that I were made <07760>

judge <08199> in the land <0776>, that every <03605> man <0376>

which <0834> hath any suit <07379> or cause <04941> might come

<0935> unto me, and I would do him justice <06663>!

5  And it was [so], that when any man <0376> came <07126> nigh

<07126> [to him] to do him obeisance <07812>, he put <07971> forth

<07971> his hand <03027>, and took <02388> him, and kissed <05401>

him.

 6  And on this <02088> manner <01697> did <06213> Absalom <053> to

all <03605> Israel <03478> that came <0935> to the king <04428> for

judgment <04941>: so Absalom <053> stole <01589> the hearts <03820>

of the men <0582> of Israel <03478>.

 7. And it came <01961> to pass after <07093> forty <0705> years

<08141>, that Absalom <053> said <0559> unto the king <04428>, I

pray <04994> thee, let me go <03212> and pay <07999> my vow <05088>,

which <0834> I have vowed <05087> unto the LORD <03068>, in Hebron

<02275>.

 8  For thy servant <05650> vowed <05087> a vow <05088> while I

abode <03427> at Geshur <01650> in Syria <0758>, saying <0559>, If

<0518> the LORD <03068> shall bring <07725> me again <07725> indeed

to Jerusalem <03389>, then I will serve <05647> the LORD <03068>.

9  And the king <04428> said <0559> unto him, Go <03212> in peace

<07965>. So he arose <06965>, and went <03212> to Hebron <02275>.

10  But Absalom <053> sent <07971> spies <07270> throughout all

<03605> the tribes <07626> of Israel <03478>, saying <0559>, As soon

as ye hear <08085> the sound <06963> of the trumpet <07782>, then ye

shall say <0559>, Absalom <053> reigneth <04427> in Hebron <02275>.

11  And with Absalom <053> went <01980> two hundred <03967> men

<0376> out of Jerusalem <03389>, [that were] called <07121>; and

they went <01980> in their simplicity <08537>, and they knew <03045>

not any <03605> thing <01697>.

12  And Absalom <053> sent <07971> for Ahithophel <0302> the

Gilonite <01526>, David's <01732> counsellor <03289>, from his city

<05892>, [even] from Giloh <01542>, while he offered <02076>

sacrifices <02077>. And the conspiracy <07195> was strong <0533>;

for the people <05971> increased <07227> continually <01980> with

Absalom <053>.

 13. And there came <0935> a messenger <05046> to David <01732>,

saying <0559>, The hearts <03820> of the men <0376> of Israel

<03478> are after <0310> Absalom <053>.

14  And David <01732> said <0559> unto all <03605> his servants

<05650> that [were] with him at Jerusalem <03389>, Arise <06965>,

and let us flee <01227>; for we shall not [else] escape <06413> from

Absalom <053>: make speed <04116> to depart <03212>, lest <06435> he

overtake <05381> us suddenly <04116>, and bring <05080> evil <07451>

upon us, and smite <05221> the city <05892> with the edge <06310> of

the sword <02719>.

 15  And the king's <04428> servants <05650> said <0559> unto the

king <04428>, Behold <02009>, thy servants <05650> [are ready to do]

whatsoever my lord <0113> the king <04428> shall appoint <0977>.

16  And the king <04428> went <03318> forth <03318>, and all

<03605> his household <01004> after <07272> him. And the king

<04428> left <05800> ten <06235> women <0802>, [which were]

concubines <06370>, to keep <08104> the house <01004>.

17  And the king <04428> went <03318> forth <03318>, and all

<03605> the people <05971> after <07272> him, and tarried <05975> in

a place <01004> that was far <04801> off.

18  And all <03605> his servants <05650> passed <05674> on beside

him; and all <03605> the Cherethites <03774>, and all <03605> the

Pelethites <06432>, and all <03605> the Gittites <01663>, six

<08337> hundred <03967> men <0376> which <0834> came <0935> after

<07272> him from Gath <01661>, passed <05674> on before the king

<04428>.

19  Then said <0559> the king <04428> to Ittai <0863> the Gittite

<01663>, Wherefore <04100> goest <03212> thou also <01571> with us?

return <07725> to thy place <04725>, and abide <03427> with the king

<04428>: for thou [art] a stranger <05237>, and also <01571> an

exile <01540>.

20  Whereas thou camest <0935> [but] yesterday <08543>, should I

this day <03117> make thee go <03212> up and down <05128> with us?

seeing I go <01980> whither I may, return <07725> thou, and take

back <07725> thy brethren <0251>: mercy <02617> and truth <0571>

[be] with thee.

21  And Ittai <0863> answered <06030> the king <04428>, and said

<0559>, [As] the LORD <03068> liveth <02416>, and [as] my lord

<0113> the king <04428> liveth <02416>, surely <03588> in what

<0834> place <04725> my lord <0113> the king <04428> shall be,

whether <0518> in death <04194> or life <02416>, even <03588> there

<08033> also will thy servant <05650> be.

 22  And David <01732> said <0559> to Ittai <0863>, Go <03212> and

pass <05674> over <05674>. And Ittai <0863> the Gittite <01663>

passed <05674> over <05674>, and all <03605> his men <0582>, and all

<03605> the little <02945> ones that [were] with him.

 23  And all <03605> the country <0776> wept <01058> with a loud

<01419> voice <06963>, and all <03605> the people <05971> passed

<05674> over <05674>: the king <04428> also himself passed <05674>

over <05674> the brook <05158> Kidron <06939>, and all <03605> the

people <05971> passed <05674> over <05674>, toward the way <01870>

of the wilderness <04057>.

 24. And lo <02009> Zadok <06659> also <01571>, and all <03605> the

Levites <03881> [were] with him, bearing <05375> the ark <0727> of

the covenant <01285> of God <0430>: and they set <03332> down

<03332> the ark <0727> of God <0430>; and Abiathar <054> went

<05927> up, until <05704> all <03605> the people <05971> had done

<06213> passing <05674> out of the city <05892>.

25  And the king <04428> said <0559> unto Zadok <06659>, Carry

<07725> back <07725> the ark <0727> of God <0430> into the city

<05892>: if I shall find <04672> favour <02580> in the eyes <05869>

of the LORD <03068>, he will bring <07725> me again <07725>, and

shew <07200> me [both] it, and his habitation <05116>:

 26  But if <0518> he thus <03541> say <0559>, I have no <03808>

delight <02654> in thee; behold <02005>, [here am] I, let him do

<06213> to me as seemeth <05869> good <02896> unto him.

27  The king <04428> said <0559> also unto Zadok <06659> the priest

<03548>, [Art not] thou a seer <07200>? return <07725> into the city

<05892> in peace <07965>, and your two <08147> sons <01121> with

you, Ahimaaz <0290> thy son <01121>, and Jonathan <03083> the son

<01121> of Abiathar <054>.

28  See <07200>, I will tarry <04102> in the plain <06160> of the

wilderness <04057>, until <05704> there come <0935> word <01697>

from you to certify <05046> me.

29  Zadok <06659> therefore and Abiathar <054> carried <07725> the

ark <0727> of God <0430> again <07725> to Jerusalem <03389>: and

they tarried <03427> there <08033>.

30  And David <01732> went <05927> up by the ascent <04608> of

[mount] Olivet <02132>, and wept <01058> as he went <05927> up, and

had his head <07218> covered <02645>, and he went <01980> barefoot

<03182>: and all <03605> the people <05971> that [was] with him

covered <02645> every man <0376> his head <07218>, and they went

<05927> up, weeping <01058> as they went <05927> up.

 31. And [one] told <05046> David <01732>, saying <0559>, Ahithophel

<0302> [is] among the conspirators <07194> with Absalom <053>. And

David <01732> said <0559>, O LORD <03068>, I pray <04994> thee, turn

the counsel <06098> of Ahithophel <0302> into foolishness <05528>.

32  And it came <01961> to pass, that [when] David <01732> was come

<0935> to the top <07218> [of the mount], where he worshipped

<07812> God <0430>, behold <02009>, Hushai <02365> the Archite

<0757> came to meet <07125> him with his coat <03801> rent <07167>,

and earth <0127> upon his head <07218>:

33  Unto whom David <01732> said <0559>, If <0518> thou passest

<05674> on with me, then thou shalt be a burden <04853> unto me:

34  But if <0518> thou return <07725> to the city <05892>, and say

<0559> unto Absalom <053>, I will be thy servant <05650>, O king

<04428>; [as] I [have been <01961>] thy father's <01> servant

<05650> hitherto <0227>, so [will] I now <06258> also [be] thy

servant <05650>: then mayest thou for me defeat <06565> the counsel

<06098> of Ahithophel <0302>.

35  And [hast thou] not there <08033> with thee Zadok <06659> and

Abiathar <054> the priests <03548>? therefore it shall be, [that]

what <03605> thing <01697> soever <0834> thou shalt hear <08085> out

of the king's <04428> house <01004>, thou shalt tell <05046> [it] to

Zadok <06659> and Abiathar <054> the priests <03548>.

36  Behold <02009>, [they have] there <08033> with them their two

<08147> sons <01121>, Ahimaaz <0290> Zadok's [son], and Jonathan

<03083> Abiathar's <054> [son]; and by them ye shall send <07971>

unto me every <03605> thing <01697> that ye can hear <08085>.

 37  So Hushai <02365> David's <01732> friend <07463> came <0935>

into the city <05892>, and Absalom <053> came <0935> into Jerusalem

<03389>.

2Samuel  16

 1. And when David <01732> was a little <04592> past <05674> the top

<07218> [of the hill], behold <02009>, Ziba <06717> the servant

<05288> of Mephibosheth <04648> met <07135> him, with a couple

<06776> of asses <02543> saddled <02280>, and upon them two hundred

<03967> [loaves] of bread <03899>, and an hundred <03967> bunches

<06778> of raisins <06778>, and an hundred <03967> of summer <07019>

fruits, and a bottle <05035> of wine <03196>.

 2  And the king <04428> said <0559> unto Ziba <06717>, What <04100>

meanest thou by these <0428>? And Ziba <06717> said <0559>, The

asses <02543> [be] for the king's <04428> household <01004> to ride

<07392> on; and the bread <03899> and summer <07019> fruit for the

young <05288> men to eat <0398>; and the wine <03196>, that such as

be faint <03287> in the wilderness <04057> may drink <08354>.

3  And the king <04428> said <0559>, And where <0346> [is] thy

master's <0113> son <01121>? And Ziba <06717> said <0559> unto the

king <04428>, Behold <02009>, he abideth <03427> at Jerusalem

<03389>: for he said <0559>, To day shall the house <01004> of

Israel <03478> restore <07725> me the kingdom <04468> of my father

<01>.

4  Then said <0559> the king <04428> to Ziba <06717>, Behold

<02009>, thine [are] all <03605> that [pertained] unto Mephibosheth

<04648>. And Ziba <06717> said <0559>, I humbly <07812> beseech thee

[that] I may find <04672> grace <02580> in thy sight <05869>, my

lord <0113>, O king <04428>.

 5. And when king <04428> David <01732> came <0935> to Bahurim

<0980>, behold <02009>, thence <08033> came <03318> out a man <0376>

of the family <04940> of the house <01004> of Saul <07586>, whose

name <08034> [was] Shimei <08096>, the son <01121> of Gera <01617>:

he came <03318> forth <03318>, and cursed <07043> still as he came

<03318>.

6  And he cast <05619> stones <068> at David <01732>, and at all

<03605> the servants <05650> of king <04428> David <01732>: and all

<03605> the people <05971> and all <03605> the mighty <01368> men

[were] on his right <03225> hand and on his left <08040>.

7  And thus <03541> said <0559> Shimei <08096> when he cursed

<07043>, Come <03318> out, come <03318> out, thou bloody <01818> man

<0376>, and thou man <0376> of Belial <01100>:

8  The LORD <03068> hath returned <07725> upon thee all <03605> the

blood <01818> of the house <01004> of Saul <07586>, in whose <0834>

stead <08478> thou hast reigned <04427>; and the LORD <03068> hath

delivered <05414> the kingdom <04410> into the hand <03027> of

Absalom <053> thy son <01121>: and, behold <02009>, thou [art taken]

in thy mischief <07451>, because <03588> thou [art] a bloody <01818>

man <0376>.

9  Then said <0559> Abishai <052> the son <01121> of Zeruiah

<06870> unto the king <04428>, Why <04100> should this <02088> dead

<04191> dog <03611> curse <07043> my lord <0113> the king <04428>?

let me go <05674> over <05674>, I pray <04994> thee, and take

<05493> off his head <07218>.

10  And the king <04428> said <0559>, What <04100> have I to do

with you, ye sons <01121> of Zeruiah <06870>? so <03588> let him

curse <07043>, because <03588> the LORD <03068> hath said <0559>

unto him, Curse <07043> David <01732>. Who <04310> shall then say

<0559>, Wherefore <04069> hast thou done <06213> so <03651>?

11  And David <01732> said <0559> to Abishai <052>, and to all

<03605> his servants <05650>, Behold <02009>, my son <01121>, which

<0834> came <03318> forth <03318> of my bowels <04578>, seeketh

<01245> my life <05315>: how <0637> much <0637> more now <06258>

[may this] Benjamite <01145> [do it]? let <03240> him alone, and let

<03240> him curse <07043>; for the LORD <03068> hath bidden <0559>

him.

12  It may be that the LORD <03068> will look <07200> on mine

affliction <06040>, and that the LORD <03068> will requite <07725>

me good <02896> for his cursing <07045> this <02088> day <03117>.

13  And as David <01732> and his men <0582> went <03212> by the way

<01870>, Shimei <08096> went <03212> along on the hill's <02022>

side <06763> over <05980> against <05980> him, and cursed <07043> as

he went <01980>, and threw <05619> stones <068> at <05980> him, and

cast <06080> dust <06083>.

14  And the king <04428>, and all <03605> the people <05971> that

[were] with him, came <0935> weary <05889>, and refreshed <05314>

themselves there <08033>.

 15. And Absalom <053>, and all <03605> the people <05971> the men

<0376> of Israel <03478>, came <0935> to Jerusalem <03389>, and

Ahithophel <0302> with him.

16  And it came <01961> to pass, when <0834> Hushai <02365> the

Archite <0757>, David's <01732> friend <07463>, was come <0935> unto

Absalom <053>, that Hushai <02365> said <0559> unto Absalom <053>,

God save <02421> the king <04428>, God save <02421> the king

<04428>. 17 And Absalom <053> said <0559> to Hushai <02365>, [Is]

this <02088> thy kindness <02617> to thy friend <07453>? why <04100>

wentest <01980> thou not with thy friend <07453>?

 18  And Hushai <02365> said <0559> unto Absalom <053>, Nay <03808>;

but whom <0834> the LORD <03068>, and this <02088> people <05971>,

and all <03605> the men <0376> of Israel <03478>, choose <0977>, his

will I be, and with him will I abide <03427>.

 19  And again <08145>, whom <04310> should I serve <05647>? [should

I] not [serve <05647>] in the presence <06440> of his son <01121>?

as I have served <05647> in thy father's <01> presence <06440>, so

<03651> will I be in thy presence <06440>.

20  Then said <0559> Absalom <053> to Ahithophel <0302>, Give

<03051> counsel <06098> among you what <04100> we shall do <06213>.

 21  And Ahithophel <0302> said <0559> unto Absalom <053>, Go <0935>

in unto thy father's <01> concubines <06370>, which <0834> he hath

left <03240> to keep <08104> the house <01004>; and all <03605>

Israel <03478> shall hear <08085> that thou art abhorred <0887> of

thy father <01>: then shall the hands <03027> of all <03605> that

[are] with thee be strong <02388>.

22  So they spread <05186> Absalom <053> a tent <0168> upon the top

<01406> of the house <01004>; and Absalom <053> went <0935> in unto

his father's <01> concubines <06370> in the sight <05869> of all

<03605> Israel <03478>.

23  And the counsel <06098> of Ahithophel <0302>, which <0834> he

counselled <03289> in those <01992> days <03117>, [was] as if a man

<0376> had enquired <07592> at the oracle <01697> of God <0430>: so

<03651> [was] all <03605> the counsel <06098> of Ahithophel <0302>

both <01571> with David <01732> and with Absalom <053>.

2Samuel  17

 1. Moreover Ahithophel <0302> said <0559> unto Absalom <053>, Let

me now <04994> choose <0977> out twelve thousand <0505> men <0376>,

and I will arise <06965> and pursue <07291> after <0310> David

<01732> this night <03915>:

2  And I will come <0935> upon him while he [is] weary <03023> and

weak <07504> handed <03027>, and will make him afraid <02729>: and

all <03605> the people <05971> that [are] with him shall flee

<05127>; and I will smite <05221> the king <04428> only <0905>:

 3  And I will bring <07725> back <07725> all <03605> the people

<05971> unto thee: the man <0376> whom <0834> thou seekest <01245>

[is] as if all <03605> returned <07725>: [so] all <03605> the people

<05971> shall be in peace <07965>.

4  And the saying <01697> pleased Absalom <053> well, and all

<03605> the elders <02205> of Israel <03478>.

 5  Then said <0559> Absalom <053>, Call <07121> now <04994> Hushai

<02365> the Archite <0757> also <01571>, and let us hear <08085>

likewise <01571> what <04100> he saith <06310>.

6  And when Hushai <02365> was come <0935> to Absalom <053>,

Absalom <053> spake <0559> unto him, saying <0559>, Ahithophel

<0302> hath spoken <01696> after this <02088> manner <01697>: shall

we do <06213> [after] his saying <01697>? if <0518> not; speak

<01696> thou.

7  And Hushai <02365> said <0559> unto Absalom <053>, The counsel

<06098> that Ahithophel <0302> hath given <03289> [is] not good

<02896> at this <02063> time <06471>.

8  For, said <0559> Hushai <02365>, thou knowest <03045> thy father

<01> and his men <0582>, that they [be] mighty <01368> men, and they

[be] chafed <04751> in their minds <05315>, as a bear <01677> robbed

<07909> of her whelps in the field <07704>: and thy father <01> [is]

a man <0376> of war <04421>, and will not lodge <03885> with the

people <05971>.

9  Behold <02009>, he is hid <02244> now <06258> in some <0259> pit

<06354>, or <0176> in some <0259> [other] place <04725>: and it will

come <01961> to pass, when some <0259> of them be overthrown <05307>

at the first <08462>, that whosoever heareth <08085> it will say

<0559>, There is a slaughter <04046> among the people <05971> that

follow <0310> Absalom <053>.

10  And he also <01571> [that is] valiant, whose <0834> heart

<03820> [is] as the heart <03820> of a lion <0738>, shall utterly

melt <04549>: for all <03605> Israel <03478> knoweth <03045> that

thy father <01> [is] a mighty <01368> man, and [they] which <0834>

[be] with him [are] valiant <02428> men <01121>.

 11  Therefore I counsel <03289> that all <03605> Israel <03478> be

generally gathered <0622> unto thee, from Dan <01835> even to

Beersheba <0884>, as the sand <02344> that [is] by the sea <03220>

for multitude <07230>; and that thou go <01980> to battle <07128> in

thine own person <06440>.

12  So shall we come <0935> upon him in some <0259> place <04725>

where he shall be found <04672>, and we will light <05117> upon him

as the dew <02919> falleth <05307> on <05921> the ground <0127>: and

of him and of all <03605> the men <0582> that [are] with him there

shall not be left <03498> so <01571 much <01571> as one <0259>.

 13  Moreover <0518>, if <0518> he be gotten <0622> into <0413> a

city <05892>, then shall all <03605> Israel <03478> bring <05375>

ropes <02256> to that city <05892>, and we will draw <05498> it into

<05704> the river <05158>, until there be not one <01571> small

<01571> stone <06872> found there <08033>. 14  And Absalom <053> and

all <03605> the men <0376> of Israel <03478> said <0559>, The

counsel <06098> of Hushai <02365> the Archite <0757> [is] better

<02896> than the counsel <06098> of Ahithophel <0302>. For the LORD

<03068> had appointed <06680> to defeat <06565> the good <02896>

counsel <06098> of Ahithophel <0302>, to the intent <05668> that the

LORD <03068> might bring <0935> evil <07451> upon Absalom <053>.

 15. Then said <0559> Hushai <02365> unto Zadok <06659> and to

Abiathar <054> the priests <03548>, Thus <02063> and thus <02063>

did Ahithophel <0302> counsel <03289> Absalom <053> and the elders

<02205> of Israel <03478>; and thus <02063> and thus <02063> have I

counselled <03289>.

16  Now <06258> therefore send <07971> quickly <04120>, and tell

<05046> David <01732>, saying <0559>, Lodge <03885> not this night

<03915> in the plains <06160> of the wilderness <04057>, but

speedily <05674> pass <05674> over <05674>; lest <06435> the king

<04428> be swallowed <01104> up, and all <03605> the people <05971>

that [are] with him.

17  Now Jonathan <03083> and Ahimaaz <0290> stayed <05975> by

Enrogel <05883>; for they might <03201> not be seen <07200> to come

<0935> into the city <05892>: and a wench <08198> went <0980> and

told <05046> them; and they went <03212> and told <05046> king

<04428> David <01732>.

 18  Nevertheless a lad <05288> saw <07200> them, and told <05046>

Absalom <053>: but they went <03212> both <08147> of them away

quickly <04120>, and came <0935> to a man's <0376> house <01004> in

Bahurim <0980>, which had a well <0375> in his court <02691>;

whither <08033> they went <03381> down <03381>.

 19  And the woman <0802> took <03947> and spread <06566> a covering

<04539> over <05921> the well's <0875> mouth <06310>, and spread

<07849> ground <07383> corn <07383> thereon <05921>; and the thing

<01697> was not known <03045>.

 20  And when Absalom's <053> servants <05650> came <0935> to the

woman <0802> to the house <01004>, they said <0559>, Where <0346>

[is] Ahimaaz <0290> and Jonathan <03083>? And the woman <0802> said

<0559> unto them, They be gone <05674> over <05674> the brook

<04323> of water <04325>. And when they had sought <01245> and could

not find <04672> [them], they returned <07725> to Jerusalem <03389>.

21  And it came <01961> to pass, after <0310> they were departed

<03212>, that they came <05927> up out of the well <0375>, and went

<03212> and told <05046> king <04428> David <01732>, and said <0559>

unto David <01732>, Arise <06965>, and pass <05674> quickly <04120>

over <05674> the water <04325>: for thus <03602> hath Ahithophel

<0302> counselled <03289> against <05921> you.

 22. Then David <01732> arose <06965>, and all <03605> the people

<05971> that [were] with him, and they passed <05674> over <05674>

Jordan <03383>: by the morning <01242> light <0216> there lacked

<05737> not one <0259> of them that was not gone <05674> over

<05674> Jordan <03383>.

23  And when Ahithophel <0302> saw <07200> that his counsel <06098>

was not followed <06213>, he saddled <02280> [his] ass <02543>, and

arose <06965>, and gat <03212> him home <01004> to his house

<01004>, to his city <05892>, and put his household <01004> in order

<06680>, and hanged <02614> himself, and died <04191>, and was

buried <06912> in the sepulchre <06913> of his father <01>. 24  Then

David <01732> came <0935> to Mahanaim <04266>. And Absalom <053>

passed <05674> over <05674> Jordan <03383>, he and all <03605> the

men <0376> of Israel <03478> with him.

 25  And Absalom <053> made <07760> Amasa <06021> captain <05921> of

the host <06635> instead <08478> of Joab <03097>: which Amasa

<06021> [was] a man's <0376> son <01121>, whose name <08034> [was]

Ithra <03501> an Israelite <03481>, that went <0935> in to Abigail

<026> the daughter <01323> of Nahash <05176>, sister <0269> to

Zeruiah <06870> Joab's <03097> mother <0517>.

26  So Israel <03478> and Absalom <053> pitched <02583> in the land

<0776> of Gilead <01568>.

27  And it came <01961> to pass, when David <01732> was come <0935>

to Mahanaim <04266>, that Shobi <07629> the son <01121> of Nahash

<05176> of Rabbah <07237> of the children <01121> of Ammon <05983>,

and Machir <04353> the son <01121> of Ammiel <05988> of Lodebar

<03810>, and Barzillai <01271> the Gileadite <01569> of Rogelim

<07274>,

28  Brought <05066> beds <04904>, and basons <05592>, and earthen

<03335> vessels <03627>, and wheat <02406>, and barley <08184>, and

flour <07058>, and parched <07039> [corn], and beans <06321>, and

lentiles <05742>, and parched <07039> [pulse],

29  And honey <01706>, and butter <02529>, and sheep <06629>, and

cheese <08194> of kine <01241>, for David <01732>, and for the

people <05971> that [were] with him, to eat <0398>: for they said

<0559>, The people <05971> [is] hungry <07456>, and weary <05889>,

and thirsty <06771>, in the wilderness <04057>.

2Samuel  18

 1. And David <01732> numbered <06485> the people <05971> that

[were] with him, and set <07760> captains <08269> of thousands

<0505> and captains <08269> of hundreds <03967> over <05921> them.

2  And David <01732> sent <07971> forth a third <07992> part of the

people <05971> under the hand <03027> of Joab <03097>, and a third

<07992> part under the hand <03027> of Abishai <052> the son <01121>

of Zeruiah <06870>, Joab's <03097> brother <0251>, and a third

<07992> part under the hand <03027> of Ittai <0863> the Gittite

<01663>. And the king <04428> said <0559> unto the people <05971>, I

will surely go <03318> forth <03318> with you myself <0589> also

<01571>.

3  But the people <05971> answered <0559>, Thou shalt not go

<03318> forth <03318>: for if <0518> we flee <05127> away, they will

not care for us; neither <0518> if <0518> half <02677> of us die

<04191>, will they care for us: but now <06258> [thou art] worth

<03644> ten <06235> thousand <0505> of us: therefore now <06258> [it

is] better <02896> that thou succour <05826> us out of the city

<05892>.

4  And the king <04428> said <0559> unto them, What <0834> seemeth

<05869> you best <03190> I will do <06213>. And the king <04428>

stood <05975> by the gate <08179> side <03027>, and all <03605> the

people <05971> came <03318> out by hundreds <03967> and by thousands

<0505>.

5  And the king <04428> commanded <06680> Joab <03097> and Abishai

<052> and Ittai <0863>, saying <0559>, [Deal] gently <03814> for my

sake with the young <05288> man, [even] with Absalom <053>. And all

<03605> the people <05971> heard <08085> when the king <04428> gave

all <03605> the captains <08269> charge <06680> concerning Absalom

<053>.

6  So the people <05971> went <03318> out into the field <07704>

against <07125> Israel <03478>: and the battle <04421> was in the

wood <03293> of Ephraim <0669>;

7  Where <08033> the people <05971> of Israel <03478> were slain

<05062> before <06440> the servants <05650> of David <01732>, and

there <08033> was there <08033> a great <01419> slaughter <04046>

that day <03117> of twenty <06242> thousand <0505> [men].

8  For the battle <04421> was there <08033> scattered <06327> over

<05921> the face <06440> of all <03605> the country <0776>: and the

wood <03293> devoured <0398> more <07235> people <05971> that day

<03117> than the sword <02719> devoured <0398>.

 9. And Absalom <053> met <07122> the servants <05650> of David

<01732>. And Absalom <053> rode <07392> upon a mule <06505>, and the

mule <06505> went <0935> under <08478> the thick boughs <07730> of a

great <01419> oak <0424>, and his head <07218> caught <02388> hold

<02388> of the oak <0424>, and he was taken <05414> up between

<0996> the heaven <08064> and the earth <0776>; and the mule <06505>

that [was] under <08478> him went <05674> away.

 10  And a certain <0259> man <0376> saw <07200> [it], and told

<05046> Joab <03097>, and said <0559>, Behold <02009>, I saw <07200>

Absalom <053> hanged <08518> in an oak <0424>.

11  And Joab <03097> said <0559> unto the man <0376> that told

<05046> him, And, behold <02009>, thou sawest <07200> [him], and why

<04069> didst thou not smite <05221> him there <08033> to the ground

<0776>? and I would have given <05414> thee ten <06235> [shekels] of

silver <03701>, and a girdle <02290>.

12  And the man <0376> said <0559> unto Joab <03097>, Though

<03863> I should receive <08254> a thousand <0505> [shekels] of

silver <03701> in mine hand <03709>, [yet] would I not put <07971>

forth <07971> mine hand <03027> against <0413> the king's <04428>

son <01121>: for in our hearing <0241> the king <04428> charged

<06680> thee and Abishai <052> and Ittai <0863>, saying <0559>,

Beware <08104> that none [touch] the young <05288> man Absalom

<053>.

 13  Otherwise <0176> I should have wrought <06213> falsehood

<08267> against mine own life <05315>: for there is no <03808>

matter <01697> hid <03582> from the king <04428>, and thou thyself

<0859> wouldest have set <03320> thyself against <05048> [me].

 14  Then said <0559> Joab <03097>, I may not tarry <03176> thus

<03651> with thee. And he took <03947> three <07969> darts <07626>

in his hand <03027>, and thrust <08628> them through the heart

<03820> of Absalom <053>, while <05750> he [was] yet alive <02416>

in the midst <03820> of the oak <0424>.

 15  And ten <06235> young <05288> men that bare <05375> Joab's

<03097> armour <03627> compassed <05437> about <05437> and smote

<05221> Absalom <053>, and slew <04191> him.

16  And Joab <03097> blew <08628> the trumpet <07782>, and the

people <05971> returned <07725> from pursuing <07291> after <0310>

Israel <03478>: for Joab <03097> held <02820> back <02820> the

people <05971>.

17  And they took <03947> Absalom <053>, and cast <07993> him into

<0413> a great <01419> pit <06354> in the wood <03293>, and laid

<05324> a very <03966> great <01419> heap <01530> of stones <068>

upon him: and all <03605> Israel <03478> fled <05127> every <0376>

one <0376> to his tent <0168>.

18  Now Absalom <053> in his lifetime <02416> had taken <03947> and

reared <05324> up for himself a pillar <04678>, which <0834> [is] in

the king's <04428> dale <06010>: for he said <0559>, I have no

<0369> son <01121> to keep my name <08034> in remembrance <02142>:

and he called <07121> the pillar <04678> after <05921> his own name

<08034>: and it is called <07121> unto this <02088> day <03117>,

Absalom's <053> place <03027>.

 19. Then said <0559> Ahimaaz <0290> the son <01121> of Zadok

<06659>, Let me now <04994> run <07323>, and bear <01319> the king

<04428> tidings <01319>, how that the LORD <03068> hath avenged

<08199> him of his enemies <0341>.

20  And Joab <03097> said <0559> unto him, Thou shalt not bear

<01319> tidings <01309> this <02088> day <03117>, but thou shalt

bear <01319> tidings <01319> another <0312> day <03117>: but this

<02088> day <03117> thou shalt bear <01319> no <03808> tidings

<01319>, because the king's <04428> son <01121> is dead <04191>.

 21  Then said <0559> Joab <03097> to Cushi <03569>, Go <03212> tell

<05046> the king <04428> what <0834> thou hast seen <07200>. And

Cushi <03569> bowed <07812> himself unto Joab <03097>, and ran

<07323>.

22  Then said <0559> Ahimaaz <0290> the son <01121> of Zadok

<06659> yet <05750> again <03254> to Joab <03097>, But howsoever,

let me, I pray <04994> thee, also <01571> run <07323> after <0310>

Cushi <03569>. And Joab <03097> said <0559>, Wherefore wilt thou run

<07323>, my son <01121>, seeing that thou hast no <0369> tidings

<01309> ready <04672>?

23  But howsoever, [said he], let me run <07323>. And he said

<0559> unto him, Run <07323>. Then Ahimaaz <0290> ran <07323> by the

way <01870> of the plain <03603>, and overran <05674> Cushi <03569>.

 24  And David <01732> sat <03427> between <0996> the two <08147>

gates <08179>: and the watchman <06822> went <03212> up to the roof

<01406> over <0413> the gate <08179> unto the wall <02346>, and

lifted <05375> up his eyes <05869>, and looked <07200>, and behold

<02009> a man <0376> running <07323> alone <0905>.

25  And the watchman <06822> cried <07121>, and told <05046> the

king <04428>. And the king <04428> said <0559>, If <0518> he [be]

alone <0905>, [there is] tidings <01309> in his mouth <06310>. And

he came <03212> apace, and drew near <07126>.

 26  And the watchman <06822> saw <07200> another <0312> man <0376>

running <07323>: and the watchman <06822> called <07121> unto the

porter <07778>, and said <0559>, Behold <02009> [another] man <0376>

running <07323> alone <0905>. And the king <04428> said <0559>, He

also <01571> bringeth <01319> tidings <01319>.

27  And the watchman <06822> said <0559>, Me thinketh <07200> the

running <04794> of the foremost <07223> is like the running <04794>

of Ahimaaz <0290> the son <01121> of Zadok <06659>. And the king

<04428> said <0559>, He [is] a good <02896> man <0376>, and cometh

<0935> with good <02896> tidings <01309>.

28  And Ahimaaz <0290> called <07121>, and said <0559> unto the

king <04428>, All is well <07965>. And he fell <07812> down <07821>

to the earth <0776> upon his face <0639> before the king <04428>,

and said <0559>, Blessed <01288> [be] the LORD <03068> thy God

<0430>, which <0834> hath delivered <05462> up the men <0582> that

lifted <05375> up their hand <03027> against my lord <0113> the king

<04428>.

29  And the king <04428> said <0559>, Is the young <05288> man

Absalom <053> safe <07965>? And Ahimaaz <0290> answered <0559>, When

Joab <03097> sent <07971> the king's <04428> servant <05650>, and

[me] thy servant <05650>, I saw <07200> a great <01419> tumult

<01995>, but I knew <03045> not what <04100> [it was].

30  And the king <04428> said <0559> [unto him], Turn <05437> aside

<05437>, [and] stand <03320> here <03541>. And he turned <05437>

aside <05437>, and stood <05975> still.

31  And, behold <02009>, Cushi <03569> came <0935>; and Cushi

<03569> said <0559>, Tidings <01319>, my lord <0113> the king

<04428>: for the LORD <03068> hath avenged <08199> thee this day

<03117> of all <03605> them that rose <06965> up against <05921>

thee.

32  And the king <04428> said <0559> unto Cushi <03569>, Is the

young <05288> man Absalom <053> safe <07965>? And Cushi <03569>

answered <0559>, The enemies <0341> of my lord <0113> the king

<04428>, and all <03605> that rise <06965> against <05921> thee to

do [thee] hurt <07451>, be as [that] young <05288> man [is].

33  And the king <04428> was much moved <07264>, and went <05927>

up to the chamber <05944> over <05921> the gate <08179>, and wept

<01058>: and as he went <03212>, thus <03541> he said <0559>, O my

son <01121> Absalom <053>, my son <01121>, my son <01121> Absalom

<053>! would God I had died <04191> for thee, O Absalom <053>, my

son <01121>, my son <01121>!

2Samuel  19

 1. And it was told <05046> Joab <03097>, Behold <02009>, the king

<04428> weepeth <01058> and mourneth <056> for Absalom <053>.

2  And the victory <08668> that day <03117> was [turned] into

mourning <060> unto all <03605> the people <05971>: for the people

<05971> heard <08085> say <0559> that day <03117> how the king

<04428> was grieved <06087> for his son <01121>.

3  And the people <05971> gat <0935> them by stealth <01589> that

day <03117> into the city <05892>, as people <05971> being ashamed

<03637> steal <01589> away when they flee <05127> in battle <04421>.

4  But the king <04428> covered <03813> his face <06440>, and the

king <04428> cried <02199> with a loud <01419> voice <06963>, O my

son <01121> Absalom <053>, O Absalom <053>, my son <01121>, my son

<01121>!

5  And Joab <03097> came <0935> into the house <01004> to the king

<04428>, and said <0559>, Thou hast shamed <03001> this day <03117>

the faces <06440> of all <03605> thy servants <05650>, which this

day <03117> have saved <04422> thy life <05315>, and the lives

<05315> of thy sons <01121> and of thy daughters <01121>, and the

lives <05315> of thy wives <0802>, and the lives <05315> of thy

concubines <06370>;

6  In that thou lovest <0157> thine enemies <08130>, and hatest

<08130> thy friends <0157>. For thou hast declared <05046> this day

<03117>, that thou regardest neither <0369> princes <08269> nor

servants <05650>: for this day <03117> I perceive <03045>, that if

<03863> Absalom <053> had lived <02416>, and all <03605> we had died

<04191> this day <03117>, then <0227> it had pleased thee well.

 7  Now <06258> therefore arise <06965>, go <03318> forth <03318>,

and speak <01696> comfortably unto thy servants <05650>: for I swear

<07650> by the LORD <03068>, if <03588> thou go <03318> not forth

<03318>, there will not tarry <03885> one <0376> with thee this

night <03915>: and that will be worse <07489> unto thee than all

<03605> the evil <07451> that befell <0935> thee from thy youth

<05271> until <05704> now <06258>.

8  Then the king <04428> arose <06965>, and sat <03427> in the gate

<08179>. And they told <05046> unto all <03605> the people <05971>,

saying <0559>, Behold <02009>, the king <04428> doth sit <03427> in

the gate <08179>. And all <03605> the people <05971> came <0935>

before <06440> the king <04428>: for Israel <03478> had fled <05127>

every man <0376> to his tent <0168>.

 9. And all <03605> the people <05971> were at strife <01777>

throughout all <03605> the tribes <07626> of Israel <03478>, saying

<0559>, The king <04428> saved <05337> us out of the hand <03709> of

our enemies <0341>, and he delivered <04422> us out of the hand

<03709> of the Philistines <06430>; and now <06258> he is fled

<01272> out of the land <0776> for Absalom <053>.

 10  And Absalom <053>, whom <0834> we anointed <04886> over <05921>

us, is dead <04191> in battle <04421>. Now <06258> therefore why

<04100> speak <02790> ye not a word of bringing <07725> the king

<04428> back <07725>?

 11  And king <04428> David <01732> sent <07971> to Zadok <06659>

and to Abiathar <054> the priests <03548>, saying <0559>, Speak

<01696> unto the elders <02205> of Judah <03063>, saying <0559>, Why

<04100> are ye the last <0314> to bring <07725> the king <04428>

back <07725> to his house <01004>? seeing the speech <01697> of all

<03605> Israel <03478> is come <0935> to the king <04428>, [even] to

his house <01004>.

12  Ye [are] my brethren <0251>, ye [are] my bones <06106> and my

flesh <01320>: wherefore <04100> then are ye the last <0314> to

bring <07725> back <07725> the king <04428>?

13  And say <0559> ye to Amasa <06021>, [Art] thou not of my bone

<06106>, and of my flesh <01320>? God <0430> do <06213> so <03541>

to me, and more <03254> also <03541>, if <0518> thou be not captain

<08269> of the host <06635> before <06440> me continually in the

room <08478> of Joab <03097>.

14  And he bowed <05186> the heart <03824> of all <03605> the men

<0376> of Judah <03063>, even as [the heart of] one <0259> man

<0376>; so that they sent <07971> [this word] unto the king <04428>,

Return <07725> thou, and all <03605> thy servants <05650>.

15  So the king <04428> returned <07725>, and came <0935> to Jordan

<03383>. And Judah <03063> came <0935> to Gilgal <01537>, to go

<03212> to meet <07125> the king <04428>, to conduct <05674> the

king <04428> over <05674> Jordan <03383>.

 16. And Shimei <08096> the son <01121> of Gera <01617>, a Benjamite

<01145>, which <0834> [was] of Bahurim <0980>, hasted <04116> and

came <03381> down <03381> with the men <0376> of Judah <03063> to

meet <07125> king <04428> David <01732>.

17  And [there were] a thousand <0505> men <0376> of Benjamin

<01144> with him, and Ziba <06717> the servant <05288> of the house

<01004> of Saul <07586>, and his fifteen <06240> sons <01121> and

his twenty <06242> servants <05650> with him; and they went <06743>

over <06743> Jordan <03383> before <06440> the king <04428>.

 18  And there went <05674> over <05674> a ferry <05679> boat

<05679> to carry <05674> over <05674> the king's <04428> household

<01004>, and to do <06213> what he thought <05869> good <02896>. And

Shimei <08096> the son <01121> of Gera <01617> fell <05307> down

before <06440> the king <04428>, as he was come <05674> over <05674>

Jordan <03383>;

19  And said <0559> unto the king <04428>, Let not my lord <0113>

impute <02803> iniquity <05771> unto me, neither <0408> do thou

remember <02142> that which <0834> thy servant <05650> did

perversely <05753> the day <03117> that my lord <0113> the king

<04428> went <03318> out of Jerusalem <03389>, that the king <04428>

should take <07760> it to his heart <03820>.

20  For thy servant <05650> doth know <03045> that I have sinned

<02398>: therefore, behold <02009>, I am come <0935> the first

<07223> this day <03117> of all <03605> the house <01004> of Joseph

<03130> to go <03381> down <03381> to meet <07125> my lord <0113>

the king <04428>.

21  But Abishai <052> the son <01121> of Zeruiah <06870> answered

<06030> and said <0559>, Shall not Shimei <08096> be put to death

<04191> for this <02063>, because <03588> he cursed <07043> the

LORD'S <03068> anointed <04899>?

22  And David <01732> said <0559>, What <04100> have I to do with

you, ye sons <01121> of Zeruiah <06870>, that ye should this day

<03117> be adversaries <07854> unto me? shall there any man <0376>

be put to death <04191> this day <03117> in Israel <03478>? for do

not I know <03045> that I [am] this day <03117> king <04428> over

<05921> Israel <03478>?

23  Therefore the king <04428> said <0559> unto Shimei <08096>,

Thou shalt not die <04191>. And the king <04428> sware <07650> unto

him.

 24. And Mephibosheth <04648> the son <01121> of Saul <07586> came

<03381> down <03381> to meet <07125> the king <04428>, and had

neither <03808> dressed <06213> his feet <07272>, nor <03808>

trimmed <06213> his beard <08222>, nor <03808> washed <03526> his

clothes <0899>, from the day <03117> the king <04428> departed

<03212> until <05704> the day <03117> he came <0935> [again] in

peace <07965>.

25  And it came <01961> to pass, when <03588> he was come <0935> to

Jerusalem <03389> to meet <07125> the king <04428>, that the king

<04428> said <0559> unto him, Wherefore <04100> wentest <01980> not

thou with me, Mephibosheth <04648>?

 26  And he answered <0559>, My lord <0113>, O king <04428>, my

servant <05650> deceived <07411> me: for thy servant <05650> said

<0559>, I will saddle <02280> me an ass <02543>, that I may ride

<07392> thereon <05921>, and go <03212> to the king <04428>; because

<03588> thy servant <05650> [is] lame <06455>. 27  And he hath

slandered <07270> thy servant <05650> unto my lord <0113> the king

<04428>; but my lord <0113> the king <04428> [is] as an angel

<04397> of God <0430>: do <06213> therefore [what is] good <02896>

in thine eyes <05869>.

 28  For all <03605> [of] my father's <01> house <01004> were but

dead <04194> men <0582> before <06440> my lord <0113> the king

<04428>: yet didst thou set <07896> thy servant <05650> among them

that did eat <0398> at thine own table <07979>. What <04100> right

<06666> therefore have <03426> I yet to cry <02199> any more <05750>

unto the king <04428>?

29  And the king <04428> said <0559> unto him, Why <04100> speakest

<01696> thou any more <05750> of thy matters <01697>? I have said

<0559>, Thou and Ziba <06717> divide <02505> the land <07704>.

30  And Mephibosheth <04648> said <0559> unto the king <04428>, Yea

<0637>, let him take <03947> all <03605>, forasmuch as my lord

<0113> the king <04428> is come <0935> again <07725> in peace

<07965> unto his own house <01004>.

 31. And Barzillai <01271> the Gileadite <01569> came <03381> down

<03381> from Rogelim <07274>, and went <05674> over <05674> Jordan

<03383> with the king <04428>, to conduct <07971> him over <05674>

Jordan <03383>.

 32  Now Barzillai <01271> was a very <03966> aged <02204> man,

[even] fourscore <08084> years <08141> old <01121>: and he had

provided the king <04428> of sustenance <03557> while he lay <07871>

at Mahanaim <04266>; for he [was] a very <03966> great <01419> man

<0376>.

33  And the king <04428> said <0559> unto Barzillai <01271>, Come

<05674> thou over <05674> with me, and I will feed <03557> thee with

me in Jerusalem <03389>.

34  And Barzillai <01271> said <0559> unto the king <04428>, How

<04100> long <03117> have I to live <02416>, that I should go

<05927> up with the king <04428> unto Jerusalem <03389>?

 35  I [am] this day <03117> fourscore <08084> years <08141> old

<01121>: [and] can I discern <03045> between <0996> good <02896> and

evil <07451>? can thy servant <05650> taste <02938> what I eat

<0398> or <0854> what I drink <08354>? can I hear <08085> any more

<05750> the voice <06963> of singing <07891> men <0582> and singing

<07891> women? wherefore <04100> then should thy servant <05650> be

yet <05750> a burden <04853> unto my lord <0113> the king <04428>?

 36  Thy servant <05650> will go <05674> a little <04592> way over

<05674> Jordan <03383> with the king <04428>: and why <04100> should

the king <04428> recompense <01580> it me with such <02063> a reward

<01578>?

 37  Let thy servant <05650>, I pray <04994> thee, turn <07725> back

<07725> again <07725>, that I may die <04191> in mine own city

<05892>, [and be buried] by the grave <06913> of my father <01> and

of my mother <0517>. But behold <02009> thy servant <05650> Chimham

<03643>; let him go <05674> over <05674> with my lord <03068> the

king <04428>; and do <06213> to him what shall seem good <02896>

unto thee.

38  And the king <04428> answered <0559>, Chimham <03643> shall go

<05674> over with me, and I will do <06213> to him that which shall

seem good <02896> unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require

<0977> of me, [that] will I do <06213> for thee.

39  And all <03605> the people <05971> went <05674> over Jordan

<03383>. And when the king <04428> was come <05674> over, the king

<04428> kissed <05401> Barzillai <01271>, and blessed <01288> him;

and he returned <07725> unto his own place <04725>.

 40. Then the king <04428> went <05674> on to Gilgal <01537>, and

Chimham <03643> went <05674> on with him: and all <03605> the people

<05971> of Judah <03063> conducted <05674> the king <04428>, and

also <01571> half <02677> the people <05971> of Israel <03478>.

41  And, behold <02009>, all <03605> the men <0376> of Israel

<03478> came <0935> to the king <04428>, and said <0559> unto the

king <04428>, Why <04069> have our brethren <0251> the men <0376> of

Judah <03063> stolen <01589> thee away, and have brought <05674> the

king <04428>, and his household <01004>, and all <03605> David's

<01732> men <0582> with him, over Jordan <03383>?

42  And all <03605> the men <0376> of Judah <03063> answered

<06030> the men <0376> of Israel <03478>, Because <03588> the king

<04428> [is] near <07138> of kin to us: wherefore <04100> then be ye

angry <02734> for this <02088> matter <01697>? have we eaten <0398>

at all of the king's <04428> [cost]? or hath he given <05375> us any

gift <05379>?

43  And the men <0376> of Israel <03478> answered <06030> the men

<0376> of Judah <03063>, and said <0559>, We have ten <06235> parts

in the king <04428>, and we have also <01571> more [right <03225>]

in David <01732> than ye: why <04069> then did ye despise <07043>

us, that our advice <01697> should not be first <07223> had in

bringing <07725> back <07725> our king <04428>? And the words

<01697> of the men <0376> of Judah <03063> were fiercer <07185> than

the words <01697> of the men <0376> of Israel <03478>.

2Samuel  20

 1. And there <08033> happened <07122> to be there a man <0376> of

Belial <01100>, whose name <08034> [was] Sheba <07652>, the son

<01121> of Bichri <01075>, a Benjamite <01145>: and he blew <08628>

a trumpet <07782>, and said <0559>, We have no <0369> part <02506>

in David <01732>, neither <03808> have we inheritance <05159> in the

son <01121> of Jesse <03448>: every <0376> man <0376> to his tents

<0168>, O Israel <03478>.

 2  So every <0376> man <0376> of Israel <03478> went <05927> up

from after <0310> David <01732>, [and] followed <0310> Sheba <07652>

the son <01121> of Bichri <01075>: but the men <0376> of Judah

<03063> clave <01692> unto their king <04428>, from Jordan <03383>

even to Jerusalem <03389>.

3  And David <01732> came <0935> to his house <01004> at Jerusalem

<03389>; and the king <04428> took <03947> the ten <06235> women

<0802> [his] concubines <06370>, whom <0834> he had left <03240> to

keep <08104> the house <01004>, and put <05414> them in ward

<04931>, and fed <03557> them, but went <0935> not in unto them. So

they were shut <06887> up unto the day <03117> of their death

<04191>, living <02424> in widowhood <0491>.

 4. Then said <0559> the king <04428> to Amasa <06021>, Assemble

<02199> me the men <0376> of Judah <03063> within three <07969> days

<03117>, and be thou here <06311> present <05975>.

5  So Amasa <06021> went <03212> to assemble <02199> [the men of]

Judah <03063>: but he tarried <03186> longer than <04480> the set

<04150> time which <0834> he had appointed <03259> him.

 6  And David <01732> said <0559> to Abishai <052>, Now <06258>

shall Sheba <07652> the son <01121> of Bichri <01075> do us more

harm <03415> than <04480> [did] Absalom <053>: take <03947> thou thy

lord's <0113> servants <05650>, and pursue <07291> after <0310> him,

lest <06435> he get <04672> him fenced <01211> cities <05892>, and

escape <05337> us.

 7  And there went <03318> out after <0310> him Joab's <03097> men

<0582>, and the Cherethites <03774>, and the Pelethites <06432>, and

all <03605> the mighty <01368> men: and they went <03318> out of

Jerusalem <03389>, to pursue <07291> after <0310> Sheba <07652> the

son <01121> of Bichri <01075>.

8  When they [were] at <05973> the great <01419> stone <068> which

<0834> [is] in Gibeon <01391>, Amasa <06021> went <0935> before

<06440> them. And Joab's <03097> garment <04055> that he had put

<05414> on was girded <02296> unto him, and upon it a girdle <02290>

[with] a sword <02719> fastened <06775> upon his loins <04975> in

the sheath <08593> thereof; and as he went <03318> forth <03318> it

fell <05307> out.

9  And Joab <03097> said <0559> to Amasa <06021>, [Art] thou in

health <07965>, my brother <0251>? And Joab <03097> took <0270>

Amasa <06021> by the beard <02206> with the right <03225> hand

<03027> to kiss <05401> him.

10  But Amasa <06021> took no <03808> heed <08104> to the sword

<02719> that [was] in Joab's <03097> hand <03027>: so he smote

<05221> him therewith in the fifth <02570> [rib], and shed <08210>

out his bowels <04578> to the ground <0776>, and struck <08138> him

not again <08138>; and he died <04191>. So Joab <03097> and Abishai

<052> his brother <0251> pursued <07291> after <0310> Sheba <07652>

the son <01121> of Bichri <01075>.

 11  And one <0376> of Joab's <03097> men <0376> stood <05975> by

him, and said <0559>, He that favoureth <02654> Joab <03097>, and he

that [is] for David <01732>, [let him go] after <0310> Joab <03097>.

12  And Amasa <06021> wallowed <01556> in blood <01818> in the

midst <08432> of the highway <04546>. And when the man <0376> saw

<07200> that all <03605> the people <05971> stood <05975> still, he

removed <05437> Amasa <06021> out of the highway <04546> into the

field <07704>, and cast <07993> a cloth <0899> upon him, when he saw

<07200> that every <03605> one that came <0935> by him stood <05975>

still.

13  When he was removed <03014> out of the highway <04546>, all

<03605> the people <0376> went <05674> on after <0310> Joab <03097>,

to pursue <07291> after <0310> Sheba <07652> the son <01121> of

Bichri <01075>.

 14. And he went <05674> through all <03605> the tribes <07626> of

Israel <03478> unto Abel <062>, and to Bethmaachah <01038>, and all

<03605> the Berites <01276>: and they were gathered <07035>

together, and went <0935> also <0637> after <0310> him.

15  And they came <0935> and besieged <06696> him in Abel <062> of

Bethmaachah <01038>, and they cast <08210> up a bank <05550> against

<0413> the city <05892>, and it stood <05975> in the trench <02426>:

and all <03605> the people <05971> that [were] with Joab <03097>

battered <07843> the wall <02346>, to throw <05307> it down <05307>.

16  Then cried <07121> a wise <02450> woman <0802> out of the city

<05892>, Hear <08085>, hear <08085>; say <0559>, I pray <04994> you,

unto Joab <03097>, Come <07126> near <07126> hither, that I may

speak <01696> with thee.

17  And when he was come <07126> near <07126> unto her, the woman

<0802> said <0559>, [Art] thou Joab <03097>? And he answered <0559>,

I [am he]. Then she said <0559> unto him, Hear <08085> the words

<01697> of thine handmaid <0519>. And he answered <0559>, I do hear

<08085>.

18  Then she spake <0559>, saying <0559>, They were wont <01696> to

speak <01696> in old <07223> time, saying <0559>, They shall surely

ask <07592> [counsel] at Abel <059>: and so <03651> they ended

<08552> [the matter].

19  I [am one of them that are] peaceable <07999> [and] faithful

<0539> in Israel <03478>: thou seekest <01245> to destroy <04191> a

city <05892> and a mother <0517> in Israel <03478>: why <04100> wilt

thou swallow <01104> up the inheritance <05159> of the LORD <03068>?

1 20  And Joab <03097> answered <06030> and said <0559>, Far <02486>

be it, far <02486> be it from me, that I should swallow <01104> up

or destroy <07843>.

21  The matter <01697> [is] not so <03651>: but a man <0376> of

mount <02022> Ephraim <0669>, Sheba <07652> the son <01121> of

Bichri <01075> by name <08034>, hath lifted <05375> up his hand

<03027> against the king <04428>, [even] against David <01732>:

deliver <05414> him only, and I will depart <03212> from the city

<05892>. And the woman <0802> said <0559> unto Joab <03097>, Behold

<02009>, his head <07218> shall be thrown <07993> to thee over

<01157> the wall <02346>.

22  Then the woman <0802> went <0935> unto all <03605> the people

<05971> in her wisdom <02451>. And they cut <03772> off the head

<07218> of Sheba <07652> the son <01121> of Bichri <01075>, and cast

<07993> [it] out to Joab <03097>. And he blew <08628> a trumpet

<07782>, and they retired <06327> from the city <05892>, every man

<0376> to his tent <0168>. And Joab <03097> returned <07725> to

Jerusalem <03389> unto the king <04428>.

 23. Now Joab <03097> [was] over <0413> all <03605> the host <06635>

of Israel <03478>: and Benaiah <01141> the son <01121> of Jehoiada

<03111> [was] over <05921> the Cherethites <03774> and over <05921>

the Pelethites <06432>:

24  And Adoram <0151> [was] over <05921> the tribute <04522>: and

Jehoshaphat <03092> the son <01121> of Ahilud <0286> [was] recorder

<02142>:

25  And Sheva <07724> [was] scribe <05608>: and Zadok <06659> and

Abiathar <054> [were] the priests <03548>:

 26  And Ira <05896> also <01571> the Jairite <02972> was a chief

<03548> ruler about David <01732>.

2Samuel  21

 1. Then there was a famine <07458> in the days <03117> of David

<01732> three <07969> years <08141>, year <08141> after <0310> year

<08141>; and David <01732> enquired <01245> of the LORD <03068>. And

the LORD <03068> answered <0559>, [It is] for Saul <07586>, and for

[his] bloody <01818> house <01004>, because he slew <04191> the

Gibeonites <01393>.

2  And the king <04428> called <07121> the Gibeonites <01393>, and

said <0559> unto them; (now the Gibeonites <01393> [were] not of the

children <01121> of Israel <03478>, but of the remnant <03499> of

the Amorites <0567>; and the children <01121> of Israel <03478> had

sworn <07650> unto them: and Saul <07586> sought <01245> to slay

<05221> them in his zeal <07065> to the children <01121> of Israel

<03478> and Judah <03063>.)

3  Wherefore David <01732> said <0559> unto the Gibeonites <01393>,

What <04100> shall I do <06213> for you? and wherewith <04100> shall

I make the atonement <03722>, that ye may bless <01288> the

inheritance <05159> of the LORD <03068>?

4  And the Gibeonites <01393> said <0559> unto him, We will have no

<0369> silver <03701> nor gold <02091> of Saul <07586>, nor of his

house <01004>; neither <0369> for us shalt thou kill <04191> any man

<0376> in Israel <03478>. And he said <0559>, What <04100> ye shall

say <0559>, [that] will I do <06213> for you.

5  And they answered <0559> the king <04428>, The man <0376> that

consumed <03615> us, and that devised <01819> against us [that] we

should be destroyed <08045> from remaining <03320> in any <03605> of

the coasts <01366> of Israel <03478>,

6  Let seven <07651> men <0582> of his sons <01121> be delivered

<05414> unto us, and we will hang <03363> them up unto the LORD

<03068> in Gibeah <01390> of Saul <07586>, [whom] the LORD <03068>

did choose <0972>. And the king <04428> said <0559>, I will give

<05414> [them].

7  But the king <04428> spared <02550> Mephibosheth <04648>, the

son <01121> of Jonathan <03083> the son <01121> of Saul <07586>,

because <05921> of the LORD'S <03068> oath <07621> that [was]

between <0996> them, between <0996> David <01732> and Jonathan

<03083> the son <01121> of Saul <07586>.

 8  But the king <04428> took <03947> the two <08147> sons <01121>

of Rizpah <07532> the daughter <01323> of Aiah <0345>, whom <0834>

she bare <03205> unto Saul <07586>, Armoni <0764> and Mephibosheth

<04648>; and the five <02568> sons <01121> of Michal <04324> the

daughter <01323> of Saul <07586>, whom she brought <03205> up for

Adriel <05741> the son <01121> of Barzillai <01271> the Meholathite

<04259>:

9  And he delivered <05414> them into the hands <03027> of the

Gibeonites <01393>, and they hanged <03363> them in the hill <02022>

before <06440> the LORD <03068>: and they fell <05307> [all] seven

<07651> together <03162>, and were put to death <04191> in the days

of harvest <07105>, in the first <07223> [days], in the beginning

<08462> of barley <08184> harvest <07105>.

 10. And Rizpah <07532> the daughter <01323> of Aiah <0345> took

<03947> sackcloth <08242>, and spread <05186> it for her upon the

rock <06697>, from the beginning <08462> of harvest <07105> until

<05704> water <04325> dropped <05413> upon them out of heaven

<08064>, and suffered <05414> neither <03808> the birds <05775> of

the air <08064> to rest <05117> on <05921> them by day <03119>, nor

the beasts <02416> of the field <07704> by night <03915>.

11  And it was told <05046> David <01732> what Rizpah <07532> the

daughter <01323> of Aiah <0345>, the concubine <06370> of Saul

<07586>, had done <06213>.

12  And David <01732> went <03212> and took <03947> the bones

<06106> of Saul <07586> and the bones <06106> of Jonathan <03083>

his son <01121> from the men <01167> of Jabeshgilead, which <0834>

had stolen <01589> them from the street <07339> of Bethshan <01052>,

where the Philistines <06430> had hanged <08511> them, when <03117>

the Philistines <06430> had <01961> slain <05221> Saul <07586> in

Gilboa <01533>:

13  And he brought <05927> up from thence <08033> the bones <06106>

of Saul <07586> and the bones <06106> of Jonathan <03083> his son

<01121>; and they gathered <0622> the bones <06106> of them that

were hanged <03363>.

14  And the bones <06106> of Saul <07586> and Jonathan <03083> his

son <01121> buried <06912> they in the country <0776> of Benjamin

<01144> in Zelah <06762>, in the sepulchre <06913> of Kish <07027>

his father <01>: and they performed <06213> all <03605> that the

king <04428> commanded <06680>. And after <0310> that God <0430> was

intreated <06279> for the land <0776>.

 15. Moreover the Philistines <06430> had <01961> yet <05750> war

<04421> again <05750> with Israel <03478>; and David <01732> went

<03381> down <03381>, and his servants <05650> with him, and fought

<03898> against the Philistines <06430>: and David <01732> waxed

faint <05774>.

16  And Ishbibenob <03430>, which <0834> [was] of the sons <03211>

of the giant <07497>, the weight <04948> of whose spear <07013>

[weighed] three <07969> hundred <03967> [shekels] of brass <05178>

in weight <04948>, he being girded <02296> with a new <02319>

[sword], thought <0559> to have slain <05221> David <01732>.

17  But Abishai <052> the son <01121> of Zeruiah <06870> succoured

<05826> him, and smote <05221> the Philistine <06430>, and killed

<04191> him. Then <0227> the men <0582> of David <01732> sware

<07650> unto him, saying <0559>, Thou shalt go <03318> no <03808>

more <05750> out with us to battle <04421>, that thou quench <03518>

not the light <05216> of Israel <03478>.

18  And it came <01961> to pass after <0310> this <03651>, that

there was again <05750> a battle <04421> with the Philistines

<06430> at Gob <01359>: then <0227> Sibbechai <05444> the Hushathite

<02843> slew <05221> Saph <05593>, which <0834> [was] of the sons

<03211> of the giant <07497>.

 19  And there was again <05750> a battle <04421> in Gob <01359>

with the Philistines <06430>, where Elhanan <0445> the son <01121>

of Jaareoregim <03296>, a Bethlehemite <01022>, slew <05221> [the

brother of] Goliath <01555> the Gittite <01663>, the staff <06086>

of whose spear <02595> [was] like a weaver's <0707> beam <04500>.

 20  And there was yet <05750> a battle <04421> in Gath <01661>,

where was a man <0376> of [great] stature <04055>, that had on every

hand <03027> six <08337> fingers <0676>, and on every foot <07272>

six <08337> toes <0676>, four <0702> and twenty <06242> in number

<04557>; and he also <01571> was born <03205> to the giant <07497>.

21  And when he defied <02778> Israel <03478>, Jonathan <03083> the

son <01121> of Shimea <08096> the brother <0251> of David <01732>

slew <05221> him.

 22  These <0428> four <0702> were born <03205> to the giant <07497>

in Gath <01661>, and fell <05307> by the hand <03027> of David

<01732>, and by the hand <03027> of his servants <05650>.

2Samuel  22

 1. And David <01732> spake <01696> unto the LORD <03068> the words

<01697> of this <02063> song <07892> in the day <03117> [that] the

LORD <03068> had delivered <05337> him out of the hand <03709> of

all <03605> his enemies <0341>, and out of the hand <03709> of Saul

<07586>:

 2. And he said <0559>, The LORD <03068> [is] my rock <05553>, and

my fortress <04686>, and my deliverer <06403>;

3  The God <0430> of my rock <06697>; in him will I trust <02620>:

[he is] my shield <04043>, and the horn <07161> of my salvation

<03468>, my high <04869> tower <04869>, and my refuge <04498>, my

saviour <03467>; thou savest <03467> me from violence <02555>.

4  I will call <07121> on the LORD <03068>, [who is] worthy to be

praised <01984>: so shall I be saved <03467> from mine enemies

<0341>.

 5  When <03588> the waves <04867> of death <04194> compassed <0661>

me, the floods <05158> of ungodly <01100> men made <07760> me afraid

<01204>;

6  The sorrows <02256> of hell <07585> compassed <05437> me about

<05437>; the snares <04170> of death <04194> prevented <06923> me;

 7  In my distress <06362> I called <07121> upon the LORD <03068>,

and cried <07121> to my God <0430>: and he did hear <08085> my voice

<06963> out of his temple <01964>, and my cry <07775> [did enter]

into his ears <0241>.

8  Then the earth <0776> shook <01607> and trembled <07493>; the

foundations <04146> of heaven <08064> moved <07264> and shook

<01607>, because <03588> he was wroth <02734>.

9  There went <05927> up a smoke <06227> out of his nostrils

<0639>, and fire <0784> out of his mouth <06310> devoured <0398>:

coals <01513> were kindled <01197> by it.

10  He bowed <05186> the heavens <08064> also, and came <03381>

down <03381>; and darkness <06205> [was] under <08478> his feet

<07272>.

11  And he rode <07392> upon a cherub <03742>, and did fly <05774>:

and he was seen <07200> upon the wings <03671> of the wind <07307>.

12  And he made <07896> darkness <02822> pavilions <05521> round

<05439> about him, dark <02841> waters <04325>, [and] thick clouds

<05645> of the skies <07834>.

13  Through the brightness <05051> before <05048> him were coals

<01513> of fire <0784> kindled <01197>.

14  The LORD <03068> thundered <07481> from heaven <08064>, and the

most <06944> High <05945> uttered <05414> his voice <06963>.

15  And he sent <07971> out arrows <02671>, and scattered <06327>

them; lightning <01300>, and discomfited <02000> them.

16  And the channels <0650> of the sea <03220> appeared <07200>,

the foundations <04146> of the world <08398> were discovered

<01540>, at the rebuking <01606> of the LORD <03068>, at the blast

<05397> of the breath <07307> of his nostrils <0639>.

17  He sent <07971> from above <04791>, he took <03947> me; he drew

<04871> me out of many <07227> waters <04325>;

18  He delivered <05337> me from my strong <05794> enemy <0341>,

[and] from them that hated <08130> me: for they were too strong

<0553> for me.

19  They prevented <06923> me in the day <03117> of my calamity

<0343>: but the LORD <03068> was my stay <04937>.

 20  He brought <03318> me forth <03318> also into a large <04800>

place: he delivered <02502> me, because <03588> he delighted <02654>

in me.

21  The LORD <03068> rewarded <01580> me according to my

righteousness <06666>: according to the cleanness <01252> of my

hands <03027> hath he recompensed <07725> me.

22  For I have kept <08104> the ways <01870> of the LORD <03068>,

and have not wickedly <07561> departed from my God <0430>.

23  For all <03605> his judgments <04941> [were] before <05048> me:

and [as for] his statutes <02708>, I did not depart <05493> from

them.

24  I was also upright <08549> before him, and have kept <08104>

myself from mine iniquity <05771>.

25  Therefore the LORD <03068> hath recompensed <07725> me

according to my righteousness <06666>; according to my cleanness

<01252> in his eye <05869> sight <05869>.

26  With the merciful <02623> thou wilt shew thyself merciful

<02616>, [and] with the upright <08549> man thou wilt shew thyself

upright <08552>.

27  With the pure <02889> thou wilt shew thyself pure <01305>; and

with the froward <06141> thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury <06617>.

28  And the afflicted <06041> people <05971> thou wilt save

<03467>: but thine eyes <05869> [are] upon the haughty <07311>,

[that] thou mayest bring <08213> [them] down <03381>.

29  For thou [art] my lamp <05216>, O LORD <03068>: and the LORD

<03068> will lighten <05050> my darkness <02822>.

30  For by thee I have run <07323> through a troop <01416>: by my

God <0430> have I leaped <01801> over a wall <07791>.

31  [As for] God <0410>, his way <01870> [is] perfect <08549>; the

word <0565> of the LORD <03068> [is] tried <06884>: he [is] a

buckler <04043> to all <03605> them that trust <02620> in him.

 32  For who <04310> [is] God <0410>, save <01107> the LORD <03068>?

and who [is] a rock <06697>, save <01107> our God <0430>?

33  God <0410> [is] my strength <04581> [and] power <02428>: and he

maketh my way <01870> perfect <08549>.

 34  He maketh <07737> my feet <07272> like <07737> hinds <0355>'

[feet <07272>]: and setteth <05975> me upon my high <01116> places.

35  He teacheth <03925> my hands <03027> to war <04421>; so that a

bow <07198> of steel <05154> is broken <05181> by mine arms <02220>.

36  Thou hast also given <05414> me the shield <04043> of thy

salvation <03468>: and thy gentleness <06031> hath made me great

<07235>.

 37  Thou hast enlarged <07337> my steps <06806> under <08478> me;

so that my feet <07166> did not slip <04571>.

38  I have pursued <07291> mine enemies <0341>, and destroyed

<08045> them; and turned <07725> not again <07725> until <05704> I

had consumed <03615> them.

39  And I have consumed <03615> them, and wounded <04272> them,

that they could not arise <06965>: yea, they are fallen <05307>

under <08478> my feet <07272>.

40  For thou hast girded <0247> me with strength <02428> to battle

<04421>: them that rose <06965> up against me hast thou subdued

<03766> under <08478> me.

41  Thou hast also given <05414> me the necks <06203> of mine

enemies <0341>, that I might destroy <06789> them that hate <08130>

me.

42  They looked <08159>, but [there was] none <0369> to save

<03467>; [even] unto the LORD <03068>, but he answered <06030> them

not.

43  Then did I beat <07833> them as small as the dust <06083> of

the earth <0776>, I did stamp <01854> them as the mire <02916> of

the street <02351>, [and] did spread <07554> them abroad <07554>.

44  Thou also hast delivered <06403> me from the strivings <07379>

of my people <05971>, thou hast kept <08104> me [to be] head <07218>

of the heathen <01471>: a people <05971> [which] I knew <03045> not

shall serve <05647> me.

45  Strangers shall submit <03584> themselves unto me: as soon as

they hear <08085>, they shall be obedient <08085> unto me.

46  Strangers shall fade <05034> away, and they shall be afraid

<02296> out of their close <04526> places.

47  The LORD <03068> liveth <02416>; and blessed <01288> [be] my

rock <06697>; and exalted <07311> be the God <0430> of the rock

<06697> of my salvation <03468>.

48  It [is] God <0410> that avengeth me, and that bringeth <03381>

down <08213> the people <05971> under <08478> me,

49  And that bringeth <03318> me forth <04161> from mine enemies

<0341>: thou also hast lifted <07311> me up on high <07311> above

them that rose <06965> up against me: thou hast delivered <05337> me

from the violent <02555> man <0376>. 50  Therefore I will give

thanks <03034> unto thee, O LORD <03068>, among the heathen <01471>,

and I will sing praises unto thy name <08034>.

51  [He is] the tower <01431> of salvation <03444> for his king

<04428>: and sheweth <06213> mercy <02617> to his anointed <04899>,

unto David <01732>, and to his seed <02233> for evermore <05769>.

2Samuel  23

 1. Now these <0428> [be] the last <0314> words <01697> of David

<01732>. David <01732> the son <01121> of Jesse <03448> said

<05002>, and the man <01397> [who was] raised <06965> up on high

<05920>, the anointed <04899> of the God <0430> of Jacob <03290>,

and the sweet <05273> psalmist <02158> of Israel <03478>, said

<05002>,

2  The Spirit <07307> of the LORD <03068> spake <01696> by me, and

his word <04405> [was] in my tongue <03956>.

 3  The God <0430> of Israel <03478> said <0559>, the Rock <06697>

of Israel <03478> spake <01696> to me, He that ruleth <04910> over

men <0120> [must be] just <06662>, ruling <04910> in the fear

<03374> of God <0430>.

4  And [he shall be] as the light <0216> of the morning <01242>,

[when] the sun <08121> riseth <02224>, [even] a morning <01242>

without <03808> clouds <05645>; [as] the tender grass <01877>

[springing] out of the earth <0776> by clear shining <05051> after

rain <04306>.

5  Although <03588> my house <01004> [be] not so <03651> with God

<0410>; yet <03588> he hath made <07760> with me an everlasting

<05769> covenant <01285>, ordered <06186> in all <03605> [things],

and sure <08104>: for [this is] all <03605> my salvation <03468>,

and all <03605> [my] desire <02656>, although <03588> he make [it]

not to grow <06779>.

6  But [the sons] of Belial <01100> [shall be] all <03605> of them

as thorns <06975> thrust <05074> away <05074>, because <03588> they

cannot <03808> be taken <03947> with hands <03027>:

7  But the man <0376> [that] shall touch <05060> them must be

fenced <04390> with iron <01270> and the staff <06086> of a spear

<02595>; and they shall be utterly burned <08313> with fire <0784>

in the [same] place <07675>.

 8. These <0428> [be] the names <08034> of the mighty <01368> men

whom <0834> David <01732> had: The Tachmonite <08461> that sat

<03427> in the seat <07674>, chief <07218> among the captains

<07991>; the same <01931> [was] Adino <05722> the Eznite <06112>:

[he lift up his spear] against <05921> eight <08083> hundred

<03967>, whom he slew <02491> at one <0259> time <06471>.

9  And after <0310> him [was] Eleazar <0499> the son <01121> of

Dodo <01734> the Ahohite, [one] of the three <07969> mighty <01368>

men with David <01732>, when they defied <02778> the Philistines

<06430> [that] were there <08033> gathered <0622> together to battle

<04421>, and the men <0376> of Israel <03478> were gone <05927>

away:

10  He arose <06965>, and smote <05221> the Philistines <06430>

until his hand <03027> was weary <03021>, and his hand <03027> clave

<01692> unto the sword <02719>: and the LORD <03068> wrought <06213>

a great <01419> victory <08668> that day <03117>; and the people

<05971> returned <07725> after <0310> him only <0389> to spoil

<06584>.

11  And after <0310> him [was] Shammah <08048> the son <01121> of

Agee <089> the Hararite <02043>. And the Philistines <06430> were

gathered <0622> together into a troop <02416>, where <08033> was a

piece <02513> of ground <07704> full <04392> of lentiles <05742>:

and the people <05971> fled <01272> from the Philistines <06430>.

12  But he stood <03320> in the midst <08432> of the ground

<02513>, and defended <05337> it, and slew <05221> the Philistines

<06430>: and the LORD <03068> wrought <06213> a great <01419>

victory <08668>.

13  And three <07991> of the thirty <07970> chief <07218> went

<03381> down <03381>, and came <0935> to David <01732> in the

harvest <07105> time unto the cave <04631> of Adullam <05725>: and

the troop <02416> of the Philistines <06430> pitched <02583> in the

valley <06010> of Rephaim <07497>.

14  And David <01732> [was] then <0227> in an hold <04686>, and the

garrison <04673> of the Philistines <06430> [was] then [in]

Bethlehem <01035>. 15  And David <01732> longed <0183>, and said

<0559>, Oh that one would give me drink <08248> of the water <04325>

of the well <0953> of Bethlehem <01035>, which <0834> [is] by the

gate <08179>!

16  And the three <07969> mighty <01368> men brake <01234> through

<01234> the host <04264> of the Philistines <06430>, and drew

<07579> water <04325> out of the well <0953> of Bethlehem <01035>,

that [was] by the gate <08179>, and took <05375> [it], and brought

<0935> [it] to David <01732>: nevertheless he would <014> not drink

<08354> thereof, but poured <05258> it out unto the LORD <03068>.

17  And he said <0559>, Be it far <02486> from me, O LORD <03068>,

that I should do <06213> this <02063>: [is not this] the blood

<01818> of the men <0582> that went <01980> in jeopardy of their

lives <05315>? therefore he would <014> not drink <08354> it. These

<0428> things did <06213> these <0428> three <07969> mighty <01368>

men.

18  And Abishai <052>, the brother <0251> of Joab <03097>, the son

<01121> of Zeruiah <06870>, was chief <07218> among three <07992>.

And he lifted <05782> up his spear <02595> against <05921> three

<07969> hundred <03967>, [and] slew <02491> [them], and had the name

<08034> among three <07969>.

19  Was he not most honourable <03513> of three <07969>? therefore

he was their captain <08269>: howbeit he attained <0935> not unto

the [first] three <07969>.

20  And Benaiah <01141> the son <01121> of Jehoiada <03111>, the

son <01121> of a valiant <02428> man <0376>, of Kabzeel <06909>, who

had done <06213> many <07227> acts <06467>, he slew <05221> two

<08147> lionlike <0739> men of Moab <04124>: he went <03381> down

<03381> also and slew <05221> a lion <0738> in the midst <08432> of

a pit <0953> in time <03117> of snow <07950>:

 21  And he slew <02026> an Egyptian <04713>, a goodly <04758> man

<0376>: and the Egyptian <04713> had a spear <02595> in his hand

<03027>; but he went <03381> down <03381> to him with a staff

<07626>, and plucked <01497> the spear <02595> out of the Egyptian's

<04713> hand <03027>, and slew <05221> him with his own spear

<02595>.

22  These <0428> [things] did <06213> Benaiah <01141> the son

<01121> of Jehoiada <03111>, and had the name <08034> among three

<07969> mighty <01368> men.

23  He was more honourable <03513> than <04480> the thirty <07970>,

but he attained <0935> not to the [first] three <07969>. And David

<01732> set <07760> him over <0413> his guard <04928>.

24  Asahel <06214> the brother <0251> of Joab <03097> [was] one of

the thirty <07970>; Elhanan <0445> the son <01121> of Dodo <01734>

of Bethlehem <01035>, 25  Shammah <08048> the Harodite <02733>,

Elika <0470> the Harodite <02733>,

 26  Helez <02503> the Paltite <06407>, Ira <05896> the son <01121>

2Samuel  24

 1. And again <03254> the anger <0639> of the LORD <03068> was

kindled <02734> against Israel <03478>, and he moved <05493> David

<01732> against them to say <0559>, Go <03212>, number <04487>

Israel <03478> and Judah <03063>.

2  For the king <04428> said <0559> to Joab <03097> the captain

<08269> of the host <02428>, which <0834> [was] with him, Go <07751>

now <04994> through <07751> all <03605> the tribes <07626> of Israel

<03478>, from Dan <01835> even to Beersheba <0884>, and number

<06485> ye the people <05971>, that I may know <03045> the number

<04557> of the people <05971>.

3  And Joab <03097> said <0559> unto the king <04428>, Now the LORD

<03068> thy God <0430> add <03254> unto the people <05971>, how many

soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes <05869> of my lord

<0113> the king <04428> may see <07200> [it]: but why <04100> doth

my lord <0113> the king <04428> delight <02654> in this <02088>

thing <01697>?

 4  Notwithstanding the king's <04428> word <01697> prevailed

<02388> against <0413> Joab <03097>, and against <05921> the

captains <08269> of the host <02428>. And Joab <03097> and the

captains <08269> of the host <02428> went <03318> out from the

presence <06440> of the king <04428>, to number <06485> the people

<05971> of Israel <03478>.

5  And they passed <05674> over <05674> Jordan <03383>, and pitched

<02583> in Aroer <06177>, on the right <03225> side <03225> of the

city <05892> that [lieth] in the midst <08432> of the river <05158>

of Gad <01410>, and toward Jazer <03270>:

6  Then they came <0935> to Gilead <01568>, and to the land <0776>

of Tahtimhodshi <08483>; and they came <0935> to Danjaan <01842>,

and about <05439> to Zidon <06721>,

7  And came <0935> to the strong <04013> hold <04013> of Tyre

<06865>, and to all <03605> the cities <05892> of the Hivites

<02340>, and of the Canaanites <03669>: and they went <03318> out to

the south <05045> of Judah <03063>, [even] to Beersheba <0884>.

8  So when they had gone <07751> through all <03605> the land

<0776>, they came <0935> to Jerusalem <03389> at the end <07097> of

nine <08672> months <02320> and twenty <06242> days <03117>.

9  And Joab <03097> gave <05414> up the sum <04557> of the number

<04662> of the people <05971> unto the king <04428>: and there were

in Israel <03478> eight <08083> hundred <03967> thousand <0505>

valiant <02428> men <0376> that drew <08025> the sword <02719>; and

the men <0376> of Judah <03063> [were] five <02568> hundred <03967>

thousand <0505> men <0376>.

 10. And David's <01732> heart <03820> smote <05221> him after

<0310> that he had numbered <05608> the people <05971>. And David

<01732> said <0559> unto the LORD <03068>, I have sinned <02398>

greatly <03966> in that I have done <06213>: and now <06258>, I

beseech <04994> thee, O LORD <03068>, take <05674> away <05674> the

iniquity <05771> of thy servant <05650>; for I have done very

<03966> foolishly <05528>.

11  For when David <01732> was up in the morning <01242>, the word

<01697> of the LORD <03068> came <01961> unto the prophet <05030>

Gad <01410>, David's <01732> seer <02374>, saying <0559>,

 12  Go <01980> and say <0559> unto David <01732>, Thus <03541>

saith <01696> the LORD <03068>, I offer <05190> thee three <07969>

[things]; choose <0977> thee one <0259> of them, that I may [do

<06213> it] unto thee.

 13  So Gad <01410> came <0935> to David <01732>, and told <05046>

him, and said <0559> unto him, Shall seven <07651> years <08141> of

famine <07458> come <0935> unto thee in thy land <0776>? or wilt

thou flee <05127> three <07969> months <02320> before <06440> thine

enemies <06862>, while they pursue <07291> thee? or that there be

three <07969> days <03117>' pestilence <01698> in thy land <0776>?

now <06258> advise <03045>, and see <07200> what <04100> answer

<01697> I shall return <07725> to him that sent <07971> me.

 14  And David <01732> said <0559> unto Gad <01410>, I am in a great

<03966> strait <06887>: let us fall <05307> now <04994> into the

hand <03027> of the LORD <03068>; for his mercies <07356> [are]

great <07227>: and let me not fall <05307> into the hand <03027> of

man <0120>.

 15  So the LORD <03068> sent <05414> a pestilence <01698> upon

Israel <03478> from the morning <01242> even to the time <06256>

appointed <04150>: and there died <04191> of the people <05971> from

Dan <01835> even to Beersheba <0884> seventy <07657> thousand <0505>

men <0376>.

16  And when the angel <04397> stretched <07971> out his hand

<03027> upon Jerusalem <03389> to destroy <07843> it, the LORD

<03068> repented <05162> him of the evil <07451>, and said <0559> to

the angel <04397> that destroyed <07843> the people <05971>, It is

enough <07227>: stay <07503> now <06258> thine hand <03027>. And the

angel <04397> of the LORD <03068> was by the threshingplace <01637>

of Araunah <0728> the Jebusite <02983>.

17  And David <01732> spake <0559> unto the LORD <03068> when he

saw <07200> the angel <04397> that smote <05221> the people <05971>,

and said <0559>, Lo <02009>, I have sinned <02398>, and I have done

wickedly <05753>: but these <0428> sheep <06629>, what <04100> have

they done <06213>? let thine hand <03027>, I pray <04994> thee, be

against me, and against my father's <01> house <01004>.

 18. And Gad <01410> came <0935> that day <03117> to David <01732>,

and said <0559> unto him, Go <05927> up, rear <06965> an altar

<04196> unto the LORD <03068> in the threshingfloor <01637> of

Araunah <0728> the Jebusite <02983>.

19  And David <01732>, according to the saying <01697> of Gad

<01410>, went <05927> up as the LORD <03068> commanded <06680>.

20  And Araunah <0728> looked <08259>, and saw <07200> the king

<04428> and his servants <05650> coming <05674> on toward <05921>

him: and Araunah <0728> went <03318> out, and bowed <07812> himself

before the king <04428> on his face <0639> upon the ground <0776>.

21  And Araunah <0728> said <0559>, Wherefore <04069> is my lord

<0113> the king <04428> come <0935> to his servant <05650>? And

David <01732> said <0559>, To buy <07069> the threshingfloor <01637>

of thee, to build <01129> an altar <04196> unto the LORD <03068>,

that the plague <04046> may be stayed <06113> from the people

<05971>.

22  And Araunah <0728> said <0559> unto David <01732>, Let my lord

<0113> the king <04428> take <03947> and offer <05927> up what

[seemeth <05869>] good <02896> unto him: behold <07200>, [here be]

oxen <01241> for burnt <05930> sacrifice, and threshing <04173>

instruments and [other] instruments <03627> of the oxen <01241> for

wood <06086>.

23  All <03605> these [things] did Araunah <0728>, [as] a king

<04428>, give <05414> unto the king <04428>. And Araunah <0728> said

<0559> unto the king <04428>, The LORD <03068> thy God <0430> accept

<07521> thee.

24  And the king <04428> said <0559> unto Araunah <0728>, Nay

<03808>; but I will surely buy <07069> [it] of thee at a price

<04242>: neither <03808> will I offer <05927> burnt <05930>

offerings unto the LORD <03068> my God <0430> of that which <0834>

doth cost <02600> me nothing <02600>. So David <01732> bought

<07069> the threshingfloor <01637> and the oxen <01241> for fifty

<02572> shekels <08255> of silver <03701>.

 25  And David <01732> built <01129> there <08033> an altar <04196>

unto the LORD <03068>, and offered <05927> burnt <05930> offerings

and peace <08002> offerings. So the LORD <03068> was intreated

<06279> for the land <0776>, and the plague <04046> was stayed

<06113> from Israel <03478>.
